In this narrated Pastel Pet Portrait Tutorial 11 x 14" I share with you my techniques and tips on how to simply and straight forward way to do the outline and Under Drawing stages. Creating this portrait as a tribute pastel drawing for my Niece. Unfortunately, Alfie is now longer with us, here are some beautiful words about Alfie from my Niece...
"I knew Alfie would be super special from the first moment we met him. I know people say that a
puppy chooses its owner, but this was so true with Alfie. We went to pick our new puppy with no
expectations at all. We walked in and all the puppies were busy playing together, except for this
beautiful little black and white puppy who walked straight over to me, so I bent down to greet him and held out my hand and he lay his head in my palm and from that moment and for the next 13 years we were completely inseparable.
He was the most loyal and loving, faithful friend anyone could wish for and I feel totally blessed to have had him in my life. Everyone that met him couldn’t believe he was a Cocker Spaniel, seeing as they have a reputation for being a tad nuts! But not Alfie, he was always so chilled and affectionate, so long as he was always with me, he was at his happiest.
I chose this picture for Dave, because when I look at into his eyes, I see the beautiful soul he was and just looking at this picture fills my heart with love and cherished memories of my beautiful boy."
Enjoyed every minute painting him. Be sure to watch the video though to the end as here and there I will be slowing thing down the real-time so you can take a closer look.

I just love the way you explain about really being in the here and now and just enjoy the process… and you are so right when you say the mind just want to go off and hurry thru to the details… what a gorgeous man you are with your gentle and reassuring voice

I've sabotaged many past efforts by focusing on details too early; frustration creeps in and the portrait is soon abandoned! I truly appreciate how you remind us to step back, take a break, calm the mind and 'enjoy the process'. Looking forward to Part 2! Alfie's story was a lovely bonus! Thank you for sharing!

I feel your frustration... it is no fun putting hours of work into a project and feeling confidence Wane and frustration take over. Every stage is a joy when the mind is silenced... I focus on being aware of being aware, which is bliss. Thank you so much for your feedback... much appreciated. You are very welcome... love to share. All the very best 🙏

I watch your videos and find them so inspiring ❤️ Not only to you provide the technical aspects of drawing, but you also speak to the heart. Alfie is a beautiful subject and the first layers of his portrait are a perfect foundation. I have to always keep in mind to keep it loose and not focus on the details too soon. Thanks for reminding me of this Dave , best wishes Julie in Australia 🇦🇺 I look forward to part 2 when you upload it 😊

Great advice on breaks. Turning the neck not only left to right but also trying to lay one’s ear towards each side and stand up, stretch, look out the window. I will even snap a photo of the painting because with age and eyesight issues squinting isn’t always the best on our eyes. I mix several brands of sticks with pencils and we know why the light pink and brown go first😊Just beautiful technique and lovely clean channel. Thank you! Teaching others that “winging it” after basic marks makes for the best outcomes.

a very interesting abstraction on the forms and details below the eye (cheek) during the drawing phase of the painting. i think your use of white later on over these areas is almost mandatory to help you make sense and delineate the boundaries even more than the dark lines earlier. thank you for the lesson :-)

This was wonderful information. How do you do this drawing technique if you want your picture bigger or smaller than the photo? Do you have a tutorial I may have missed?

It is a case of scaling the reference image to the size you require. Here is a link to a wildlife portrait. I show you how to freehand the outline. Thanks for watching, thrilled you enjoyed the video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FTKiEgG6CVA.html
