If you're falling in love with Dusty Springfield, you need to listen to Son of a Preacherman, You Don't Have To Say You Love Me, I Close My Eyes (and Count to Ten), In Private, basically anything really.
Three others that are worth it: Goin' back (1966), Some of your lovin' (1965), Summer is over (1964). One of these three Dusty herself has said is her favourite. Which one do you think it is Derek - a challenge for you :-)
Dusty is pure class. Thank you PSB for bringing her back to us for such a brilliant comeback. Please take a look at her Reputation album with more song collaborations with PSB. In Private and Nothing Had Been Proved are amazing and so is the title song.
One of the greatest popgroups ever! Solid quality-filled melodies ever since 1985. So hard, Being boring, Suburbia, Miracles, I'm with stupid, Can you forgive her?, Always on my mind, You only tell me you love me when you're drunk are just the tip of an iceberg of monumental, exceptionally strong hits.
I love your channel. You’re the only person I’ve found who reacts to my holy trinity of Abba, Madonna and The Pet Shop Boys. Check out PSB So Hard, Being Boring, Always on my mind, Rent, Domino Dancing
Love this song! A young Dusty Springfield had several hits, starting in the mid-1960s, such as "Wishin' and Hopin' " and "I Only Want to Be With You" and "Son of a Preacher Man." Dusty was the Adele of the 1960s in Britain. :-) This 1987 duet with the Pet Shop Boys was 20-some years into her career and was a big hit, too.
Dusty was a true legend with an amazing career in the UK especially during the 60’s and 70’s with her own tv show inviting alot of black artists which was unique at the time. She then left the business for awhile and basically disappeared until PSB invited her on this project. It took some coaxing but she finally agreed. Good thing too since it gave her a second career with a new soloalbum (produced by PSB).
When it comes to Pet Shop Boys I think you should give "Heart", "It's a Sin" and "Suburbia" a try. They also produced a song for Liza Minelli called "Losing My Mind", which you might like.
Those are all excellent suggestions!! "It's a Sin" and "Heart" are great picks! The Pet Shop Boys produced an entire album for Liza Minelli called "Results." (This is the album that contains "Losing My Mind"). Another outstanding track from that album is a cover of "Twist in My Sobriety."
Dusty Springfield was a British pop artist in the 60's in the UK, Europe and US. She was known for her cover of Motown hits and did backup vocals for popular Black female groups. She had exiled herself to the US in the late 70's as her popularity waned. Pet Shop Boys did this collaboration in 1989 which resulted in a come back for Dusty. Look up interviews with Neil Tennant discussing their success with Dusty. Both artists had a huge following in gay culture.
Dusty was a 60s Icon; the Aretha of the British blue-eyed soul genre. She was what Allison Moyet was to the 80s, and what Adele is today. At that time she had been retired for a decade or so. The Pet Shop boys coaxed her back to sing this song, reviving her career before she died years later.
Dusty had become a recluse in a trailer park in the U.S. when they wrote it they wouldn’t take no for an answer, other female singers put themselves up for it, but they said “no it’s Dusty or no one”! It resurrected her career. I remember seeing them in concert and they did this after her passing, she was on a big screen behind them doing her bit. Lump in the throat!
Derek, as I mentioned before you are a synth-guy ... I love it ... takes good music understanding and ability to dissect the pieces in the music. I'm a synth guy too ... worlds most impressive instrument
OMG yes, now you're my absolute favourite channel. And yes, please go on a Pet Shop Boys journey, they have a huuuge catalogue.. They even wrote a musical: Closer to heaven, I suggest the song My night...
2 other female artists wanted to do it, the boys refused as they said it was written for Dusty. She was a recluse living in a motel room in the U.S. She agreed and this was her last hit before her death.
Pet Shop Boys make such terrific dance pop. Pretty much anything from their singles collection, Discography, would be great to react to. They’ve worked with so many wonderful singers including Liza Minnelli, Kylie Minogue and David Bowie.
No one beats Dusty….Gawd bless her…memory eternal. Dusty was tortured by her attraction to women. Too bad she didn’t see the day when love wasn’t taboo…
If you are going to start a Pet Shop Boys journey you are going to be in for an amazing sonic adventure. You should start where almost everyone else who loves PSB started which is “West End Girls” and “It’s A Sin”. In my journey my favorite albums have been “Very” and “Electric” and based upon what I’ve seen you say in your reaction videos I think their “Electric” album will definitely be right up your alley, particularly the tracks “Axis”, “Love Is A Bourgeois Construct”, “Thursday” and “Vocal”. The album “SUPER” is also outstanding.
Hi Derek! If you're going to listen to Dusty, I defintely recommend you listen to the "Dusty in Memphis" album. Her voice was absolutely amazing, and it's filled with great songs. Her entire catalog is wonderful, but "Memphis" was the best album she ever released (and is also considered one of the best albums of all time). As for the Pet Shop Boys, a group I've followed for almost 40 years now, I'd definitely start with "West End Girls", their debut single and still one of their most iconic songs, and "It's A Sin" is also fantastic (especially considering its revolutionary for its time gay subtext, like "Father forgive me; I tried not to do it. Turned over a new leaf, then tore right through it"). But if you are interested in going deeper, I would definitely recommend listening to album tracks like "The Way It Used To Be" and "King Of Rome" from the Yes album, "Only The Wind" and "My October Symphony" ("It's so bemusing ; will they cancel the parade? We marched each October, now they say we were never even saved. We must be very brave.") from their Behavior album, and my favorite song - and one that most fans would probablyput in their top five even though it wasn't a big hit - "Being Boring". The video, directed by Bruce Weber, is extraordinary, but the lyrics - "Now I sit with different faces in rented rooms and foreign places. All the people I was kissing, some are here and some are missing in the Nineteen-Nineties. I never dreamt that I would get to be the creature that I always meant to be, but I thought in spite of dreams, you'd be sitting somewhere here with me" - break my heart every single time I listen to this perfect song. Yeah, I love the Pet Shop Boys, LOL.
Worth going deep: Pet Shop boys, *Joy Division/New Order,* Peter Schilling, Duran Duran, *Depeche Mode/Dave Gahan Solo Projects,* Tear for Fears, 1990's U2 - Albums: Achtung Baby/Zooropa/Pop/Passengers (U2 collaboration with Brian Eno), Oingo Boingo/Danny Elfman, INXS, Etcetera!
Brilliant choice here, and a wonderful song by PSB and Dusty. Late 80s and it was the last hit for Dusty before she died in 1999. Dusty is a royalty UK 50/60s song mistress who had tons of hits around the world and many number 1s. She fought and hid her being a Lesbian her whole life until she met PSB. Neil loved Dusty’s songs and her singing and wrote this song with her in mind. It helped Dusty to become a legend to a completely different generation. Thanks for playing it fantastic memories.
This song was a big comeback hit for Dusty Springfield. In England, this song spend a total of 6 weeks at No. 1 on the British pop chart in late 1987. In America, this song peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1988. Great comeback, indeed!!!
This song introduced Dusty to a brand new fan base , they wrote more songs for but it was short lived as she sadly died. She was a champion of American soul music in the sixties and was held in high regard as one of the best singers of her generation. You should check out her music history
I'm so happy that someone's reacting to Pet Shop Boys! They have a treasure load of hits and goodies. Please react to West End Girls, Go West, Domino Dancing, Always On My Mind, Being Boring, How Can You Expect To Be Taken Seriously, I Don't Know What You Want, Miracles, Love Comes Quickly, I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind Of Thing, Suburbia.
Dusty began in the 60's she is a very celebrated soul singer. She is considered one of the greatest female singers of all time. Look into son of a preacher man. thats the song she was vert famous for
The woman who wrote this song is the same that wrote Earth Wind & Fire's Boogie wonderland, Allee Willis, she died just a few years ago. She explains the process of writing this song in a video out there on YT (same with Boogie wonderland), she was quite unique, eccentric and obviously super talented haha.
I think "Always on my mind" is one of the best cover songs ever made because Pet Shop Boys managed to make an old Elvis Presley song a completely new one but at the same time it allows us to recognize the original song.
I don't know why this video popped up in my recommendations, but I'm glad I watched it simply because it said "React to Pet Shop Boys." Your channel is the second of two that I've seen so far of your age group reacting to 80s music... And it makes me happy to see the positive reactions from you all. The Pet Shop Boys came out just as I was entering my teens... I'm a full blooded 80s kid! As far as duets such as this one, you can fill your channel with reaction videos for months just by the masterpieces we had back then of duets alone. Dig in, it's a journey worth taking. But, back in the 80s, songs and their music videos both told stories. We had radios to listen to the music and we had such things called, MTV and Friday Night Videos that satisfied our craving for the arts of music videos. This is the first of your videos I have seen so far... I will watch more soon.. But, thank you for paying homage to the best era for entertainment in my opinion. The 80s gave us the best gifts of music, music videos, and movies in that 10 year span. I don't care what anyone says... The 80s were a work of art that faded through the decades following.
First off lemme say, that i m very pleased to see a young dude appreciating an 80s song ...the 80s were in fact very sophisticated years for music, where th concept of pop song reached its peaks by having literally Monsters in Music ( i m talking about Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Aha, The Cure,Depeche Mode, Bronski Beat/Communards and alot more) who developed the song format by addng various influences to it ( from soul to jazzy, disco,Rock, dark, new wave and much more) ...but the secret was the arrangements.....in 3/4 minutes you could experiences wonders in dynamics, research of sounds, new techniques developed through the years (when Depeche Mode began it was the about 81 and the newest keyboards were still primitive stuff, but still they managed to create "just can't get enough") and ,most of all, real enthusiasm and naivety..... talking about the Pet Shop boys, yes, they are Legendary...since the came out with "West end girls"check this song out immediately ,pls they created a "before" and an "after" Pet Shop Boys, for it was unique and new....during the years they produced several great songs " love comes quickly, opportunities, suburbia, it's a sin, domino dancing and many many more) where they refined their sound record after record.. always being classy and stylish....i d like to mention a couple songs from their biggest perios, which are majestic to me ....West End Girls, Suburbia, Left to my own Devices, It's Alright, Being Boring....check these 5 songs and tell me ,what do you think about them ..... and thanx for the vibe...seeing you getting into the song made me remember, how great it felt, when i heard it myself first
Dusty Springfield worked with the Pet Shop boys towards the tail end of her career. She said that PSB gave her the opportunity to sing a type of song that she had always wanted to do but never really had the chance. She said that she absolutely loved working with Neil and Chris. Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe are The Pet Shop Boys. Neil is the tall, curly haired vocalist who's much more talkative than his friend Chris who is the synthesizer whiz-kid. Chris is admittedly a bit shy.
Bit of trivia for everyone - the actor David Tennant (the 10th Doctor Who) took his surname from the lead singer of the Pet Shop Boys, Neil Tennant as they were his favourite pop group when he was growing up. His own name, David McDonald, had already been registered by Equity, the actor's union. Trivia over. Excellent song, this.
Been PSB fan for almost 3 decades! Now this has been really hilarious, unique and quite on point song-storywise! It's really unique to see younger generations discovering my heroes! Now, Dereck, You have touched a holy grail here! I mean by asking if their other stuff is like this... Just lemme know if you're ready for a PSB world - their many collabs, theatrics, remixes, there are just so much of everything! We're talking about their releases in 5 different decades! I'd be more than happy to convert you into a pethead!;)
You are correct that this isn't typically Dusty Springfield's genre. She is a British pop/soul legend whose biggest hits were in the 1960s. She sang a lot of big pop ballads, but she also loved Motown and was heavily influenced by American soul music. Her most renowned album is probably 'Dusty in Memphis' (worth a listen in its entirety). The Pet Shop Boys wanted to work with her in 1987 for this song and it resurrected her career. Her 1990 album, 'Reputation' includes some songs produced by The Pet Shop Boys and Heaven 17. I recommend reacting to the title track, produced by Heaven 17; it's a great, upbeat song: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eweP81AE6EY.html Sadly, Dusty Springfield passed away from cancer in 1999, but her legendary voice and influence live on.
I have always loved this song and it is amazingly incredible on it's own. But when you add Dusty Springfield to anything it can only get even that much better! Dusty will always be a trailblazer!
OH....and another good one....Liza Minnelli's "Results" album. It was entirely produced by Pet Shop Boys. A gem of an album...Don't Drop Bombs, Twist in my Sobriety, Losing My Mind, Rent, Love Pains, etc. Another one, like Dusty Springfield, who you wouldn't think would be good with PSB's sound, but it's an amazing collaboration.
Dusty was a soul singer known for the song The Son of a Preacher Man and I Only want to be with you. I’ve been a huge PSB fan since the 80s, checkout Vocal, Thursday and Burn some of their more recent tracks. The Way it Used to Be my all time favorite.
This is so true of Dusty. If you are interested in the operatic & melodramatic gestures she uses which really add to her performance - see this book. DUSTY : queen of the post-mods / Annie J. Randall. There is a whole chapter on them. From a 19th century tradtion and convention in acting and opera singing.
If you want a glimpse of PSB’s Huge catalogue you can check their presentation on 2009’s Brits awards with Lady Gaga (still beginning) and Brandon Flowers !!!
Dusty was a part of what was refered to as blue-eyed soul. She had a great voice, too bad she's passed on. One of the best videos Pet Shop Boys Check it out.
Neil and Chris (the Petshop Boys) contributed to Dusty Springfield's 1990 comeback album "Reputation". This is the Petshop Boys during their imperial phase. This song is taken from their second album, "Actually". They would outgrow this phase well and truly with the release of their 1988 and 1990 follow up albums (Introspective and Behaviour, respectfully). Another single from "Actually" you're bound to enjoy is "It's A Sin". The Petshop Boys are still active having released their most recent album, "Hotspot" earlier this year.
The Pet Shop Boys are a legendary name both at home in the UK and around the world. Some of their best songs that you may want to check out: 1) West End Girls, 2) It's a Sin, 3) Go West, 4) Home and Dry, 5) Always on my Mind, 6) Where the streets have no name, 7) I'm with stupid, 8) Heart, 9) Left to my own devices, 10) I wouldn't normally do this kind of thing. And 11) in the night Hope you enjoy.
The Pet Shop Boys were a hit making machine at that time. The record companies asked them is there ANYONE in the business you would like to work with on a collaboration... They surprised the music company when they both said "Dusty Springfield", which was hard for the industry at that time because they had lost touch with her. She was in London but had hit hard times...The Pet Shop Boys insisted they record with her and produce a new album for her.
"Heart" is another GREAT song by PSB. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wTkfK2g4pKI.html Sir Ian McKellen plays Nosferatu in the video... Dusty Springfield has been a gay icon for decades and PSB were delighted she agreed to do it. She was MASSIVE in the 60s.
Hey Dereck! It's my first time on your channel and I'm already hooked! Your excitement and analysis for this GREAT track, particularly about the ingenious layering of the vocals, is spot on. This was indeed new ground for Dusty. The Pet Shop Boys brought her into the 80s, bringing her a whole new crop of fans and deservedly so. I love love love this song. :) If you haven't already, you should check out the collaboration they did with Liza Minnelli on her 1989 album "Results", which they produced, similarly bringing Liza into the world of 80s synth pop. The stand-out tracks are "Losing My Mind" and "Twist In My Sobriety". Cheers and keep up the great work!! William :)
I wanted to add since you love her voice in this. When she came into the studio to record this she asked what they wanted her to sound like and they told her "Just sing like Dusty Springfield" because they were both fans of her work in the 60s. And yes, all of PSB's songs are like this in terms of their use of strings, synths, and production, so I recommend so many of their other songs, including their new stuff!
Dusty and Pet Shop Boys are incredible and pop royalty. Check out Dusty singing "Windmills of your Mind" -- chills! Check out Opportunities and Being Boring by Pet Shop Boys! They're so good.
Omg you just going to all the way of good stuffs. I’m glad you are discovering those artists. Pet shop boys in my opinion is the king of dance pop music. You should get to know more about them . Pure Art. 😍😉
