That's why we sometimes translated texts from well-known pop songs into german (from Phil Collins, Depeche Mode etc.). I can still remember the day well as my english teacher wrote the word "suburb" on the blackboard. It was a "WTF moment" for me. I knew what was going to happen next...After a short explanation he added "ia" to the word. I had tears in my eyes because I was the only Pet Shop Boys fan or "Pet Head" in my class. That was in 1987 and I was 13 years old. But the translation helped me to understand the song properly. I always understood "in the dark tonight" instead of "with the dogs tonight" before. And I also thank the politicians that the Berlin Wall fell. But I wish I could write better English again. I have forgotten so much...

The US street scenes were filmed in Duarte and San Bernardino while they were in Los Angeles for the MTV Video Music Awards.

What a great pop song (I was 14 when it was released in 1986 and I immediately loved it when it was played many times on Dutch radio that year...), and Neil & Chris were truly brilliant and amazing songwriters in the '80s and '90s, so thanks a lot, guys! :-)

The intro just gets to me each and every time

Back in the 80's I was living in Tokyo and often played this song on my way home from the clubs in Roppongi and Akasaka-mitsuke. "Running with the dogs at night" in the abandoned streets of Tokyo at 2 am in my red Toyota MR2 was surreal. No way to accurately describe it, you had to be there.

I love the Pet Shop Boys' music, and this is my favourite song of theirs. The backing track, the lyrics, the vocals, it's all superb and it all works well in combination, it's so harmonious. The backing track is beautiful and so happy, uplifting and cheerful as well, I love this song, might even be my favourite song ever. What Have I Done to Deserve This, Always on my Mind, and Domino Dancing deserve honourable mentions, but Suburbia is my favourite, such a unique and lovely song. It also seems like this song is about the ideal scenario of a utopian suburb that is ruined by petty crime, windows being smashed, police cars and dogs running amok. All seeming to ruin the harmony of the suburbs, especially as suburbs are usually quite peaceful. The line 'stood by the bus stop, with a felt pen, in this suburban hell', also suggests this as well.

First, "West End Girls' caught my attention, then "Love comes quickly" beguiled and seduced. "Opportunities' intrigued and thrilled but the ironic cheer and banal menace of 'Suburbia" stopped me in my tracks. This record convinced me PSB were serious - here to stay and change the Pop soundscape forever.
