As an older, straight, white atheist guy in MO, I've been pulling for Mayor Buttigieg since he entered the race. Loved the interview here. I've seen a ton of his interviews and I have to agree with alwaysuseless that each new one impresses me even more. Calm, intelligent, informed and kind is exactly what this country needs now more than ever.
As a Christian, I am very distressed by other Christians who say Gay is a Choice. God created all of us and made that choice for us. God doesn't make mistakes, we are all pre-determined. I hope Pete gets the nomination.
Thank you sincerely however most of my Christian friends Catholic friends they are so very judgmental n so self righteous they do not realize they too are human being who are sinners.
Boring straight white ethnic woman here. I like all of the Dem candidates for President, but Mayor Pete is the one and only who gets me excited. It's like when Obama ran. They both have/had charisma, which is important when it comes to being electable. But the issue that sold me on Mayor Pete is his position on climate change. We need to get our act together, and the leader of the country has to be a voice for the young people and our descendants who are going to have to deal with some difficult circumstances. The fact that he's gay is the icing on the cake.
Every interview with Pete Buttigieg makes me cry with relief, with the hope of justice, compassion, and yes, his extraordinary wisdom, after the daily abuse and fear dished out by the WH. Thanks.
Thank you for that comment. I love Pete. It is such a shame that he is being attacked by the Left (an "elitist", a "corporate shill") as well as the Right. We are so polarized. Social media is problematic. Too many people with platforms. TYT, for example, have been tearing him apart. But maybe he'll get the nomination. Wouldn't that be great? He is by far the most interesting and promising candidate. (My late father and Pete's late father were colleagues, and were very close.)
Mayor Pete seems very strategic person to me. I think he knows now is not the time for him to become President. I think he is striking one concern off his list, "no name recognition" and getting to know him instead of who he choose to love. I think it brilliant. I might vote for him down the line. Maybe after Biden does what he do 2028. Mayor Pete maybe ready. Hell 2024 who knows with this guy!
I tear up too. My 15 YO hates politics because of the negativity. I remind her that it’s our responsibility to bear witness and act. But it sure cheers her up to watch a Mayor Pete interview, or when I tell her about something he said. As a parent of a bisexual daughter growing up in the South, it’s been difficult. Her friend, a trans student, had to leave school because of discriminatory behavior of teachers and even some students. I know Pete is an underdog, but when we dream, sometimes we have to dream big.
Peter his first name LOL!!!!!!!!!!!! BuTT GOUGE!! his last name YUCK!!!!! I don't want to picture my president bending over the desk in the whitehouse to another man YUCK!!!!
I'll probably be dead by 2054 but I am really enjoying this interview. There's something so mature about Pete, he's not here to play, he's here to do a job. He's not some rich brat sailing on daddy's connections or some wishy washy nice guy. It's so refreshing it gives me a buzz.
“First time I ever met him was in the ER, very shortly after finishing residency, and was caring for a little Somali boy who had almost hanged himself. We had no Arabic translator we could talk to his mother through and we were working on getting one of the phones. Then all of a sudden this young guy in a suit shows up, and just starts translating. The boy was gravely ill and I didn’t really bother to ask who the new translator was but he spent almost an hour with the mother and I helping to talk about his prognosis and then he Took her up to the floor During the whole event he never really mentioned who he was. About an hour later he came down and shook my hand before leaving I thanked him for his help and asked him how long he’d been at the hospital. He casually replied, “I don’t work for the hospital. I’m mayor Pete.” He shook my hand and left without another word. I learned that he had simply heard over the police scanner that we needed and Arabic translator at the hospital for this tragic situation and just wanted to help. In addition to studying at Harvard, being a Rhoades scholar, working as McKenzie consultant, he happened to pick up Arabic along the way working in navy intelligence. He’s pretty amazing guy, and will do great things for a country I hope.” - Dr. Donald F. Zimmer twitter.com/ismashfizzle/status/1109282942621224961?lang=en
SabeloJerome - It's Rhodes as in Rhodes Scholar. I am sure Mayor Pete did his utmost to use his Arabic language skills in order to communicate with the young man. Brilliant comment by the way and what a testimony 💙 That's what I call "bein' in the right place at the right time." :-D Peace
This man speaks so beautifully - Pete is really a great man - that's all I have arrived at listening to him - he is an extraordinary human being and I feel needs to be our next president. This country needs the healing and brilliance this man offers. His center of truth is like a blue flame - steady. His ideas and analysis about everything are enlightened and nuanced and charitable. The fact he is offering himself up to this gauntlet puts him in a whole other stratosphere - as i want to protect him I'm also saying, Go Pete. America is not only ready for you - America is starving for you.
I'm a straight, cis-gendered, white, middle-aged, suburban man and a veteran. If you saw me driving my Ford pickup you might think certain things about me. I'm also a pacifist, vegetarian, pro-choice, overeducated former college instructor. I like Pete. I think we're ready for a gay president (and even if we're not, I like the idea), and I really like that Pete is smart and thoughtful and has a vision. I agree with most of that vision. I'm wary of him on Chelsea Manning (and therefore government control in general), his conventional economic ideas, and his reputation as an inside-the-box technocrat. If he's the candidate facing Trump, he'll get my vote without consideration. I kind of feel like the boomers have clung to power for so long that even some of us Gen-Xers have aged out of relevance.
Gay, straight or anything in between how can you not like this guy. If Mayor Pete gets the democratic nomination he's got my vote! ☑🏄💙🇺🇸🏄💙🇺🇸🏄💙🇺🇸 Harvey Milk must be smiling in heaven!👍
Mayor Pete is a full on intellectual powerhouse on so many levels! He's the light that we need to pull America out of our current darkness. This is about all of us, not just some of us! Go Pete, GO!
Thomas Waldon Did they just give you a list with bullet points? I’m sure they meant for you to form some coherent sentence/story with them, not just copy/paste them.
Pete Buttigieg is one of the most uniquely authentic persons I've ever heard. Our country desperately needs his guidance, intelligence, and sincerity. Imagine what Pete could do for our country. I love this man!!!!
Mayor Pete is just so impressive that his age really doesn't matter considering he is so mature, so experienced and so decent.... I will vote for him if he is the nominee. Actually I hope he is the nominee.
John Johnson Yep, Putin is certainly having his way with trump and trump seems to love it! The word is out and leaders of China, North Korea and others are anxiously awaiting their turn with trump.
".....a set of prejudices that not only we, but they would be better off without them." And he's speaking. Not reading. This man is what this country needs and will hopefully learn to deserve.
Maybe down the road! The world not only America is in upheaval! Foreign governments are not as embracing as America. America needs to heal...and Pete becoming President will only deepen the upheaval in America and abroad! Maybe down the road, after America heal, sitting as a VP could be a start! He will not beat 45 and his supporters! Being realistic 45 will gain more supporters!! But, I can see a Biden/Pete ticket!!
@@jackeejones7334 Our current White House has welcomed representatives of other nations who are gay (and even visit with their same-gender partner), no issue. And as for those foreign governments that would not embrace such a visitor, I'd say we do not want them as close friends anyway. And who are our friends now? The current administration ignores our NATO allies but loves to visit and phone chat with Russia, China, North Korea.
This is one of the very few times in my life that I wish I were an American - so that I could vote for an outstanding, brilliant, well-spoken, and truly kind and decent candidate like Mayor Pete. Take note, America - this one offers hope.
@@docrakidocraki8067 any idiot can be a mayor of a small town. like hillsdale, about the same population as south bend. fact..Michael Sessions (born September 22, 1987) is the former mayor of Hillsdale, Michigan, a city of about 8200 people. He was elected November 8, 2005. He was sworn into office on November 21. Elected at the age of 18,. ""nuff said""...pete is a fucking idiot liberal moron.
Mayor Pete is really intelligent and his great ideas are something we need to move forward as a nation. His sexual orientation is just an icing on the cake. While I understand being gay is significant but someone else could be gay and have nothing to contribute. To hear someone speak good English is a breath of fresh air - considering that Mr. Bigly could not even construct a decent sentence - if it hit him! When we all can move away from the gay agenda and vote for someone who can really change things in our nation, I think Pete is a serious contender.
Lol I am not an american - I have a dutch & israrli citizenship but am totally considering applying for a u.s one just so I could vote for him!!! God blessss ❤💕💗
Michael K. Yet here you are watching this clip of a “but plug moron”. Maybe you’re bored; but you’re curious about Pete’s message... and that’s a good thing! Keep educating yourself on what these candidates are about.
@Michael K. You watched the whole interview and the only comment you have is 'butt plug moron"? If you aren't impressed by his intelligence, courage or service then I feel sorry for you. Your world must be so small and stifling.
@Michael K. Yeah, I don't get the animosity. From most of the people I talk to, they appreciate Mayor Pete's articulateness, candidness, and somewhat nuanced responses to the questions he is given. He is young. The younger generation doesn't have as many hangups about being gay as the older generations. They are willing to say more than, "I don't care about your sexuality, just don't tell me about it." I could go on about his record, but can YOU see past his gayness?
An excellent interview, with some great questions asked. As a gay baby boomer, I find his humility and intelligence extremely attractive, and the fact that he is a gay man too is incidental and yet interesting. I agree with what Rachel Maddow and others say about voting your heart in the primaries. You don't evaluate the contenders for their electibility, especially with a target as easy to hit as the incumbent. More than any other Democratic candidate, I can see him as effective in foreign affairs, committed to infrastructure and economic development, daring enough to take certain reforms to Constitutional amendments, compassionate, and able to speak to a variety of constituencies, as a president has to to succeed. The Republican talking point that Anderson Cooper and others have been popularizing about his website listing no policy proposals is missing the point he's making. Policies change too much when they must be implemented, so they are at best a statement of intention, and by avoiding that artifice and speaking more directly about values and intentions, we don't get distracted by the details too early in the process. You know he's smart and analytical enough to do a good job at strategy and implementation. I like Kamala Harris's feistiness, Beto O'Rourke's inclusiveness, Eric Swalwell's sense of humor and irony, and Elizabeth Warren's amazing legislative mind, but the authenticity and wide-ranging experience of Pete Buttigieg has captured my attention quite solidly now.
Wow loved your response! I am by no means inteligent like yourself but I wish I could have met you in person! You sound awesomn! If you ever happen to visit Israel please text 😊🙌❤💕💗❤💕💗❤💕💗🇮🇱
OMG, I'm a straight, married female, but I love this guy. I don't know what it is about him, but he represents hope and CHANGE! I so hope he gets the nomination because I will vote for him in a heartbeat.
Errrrrmmm.Jennifer...you do realise that in the past 2 decades it has been concluded by a few serious polls & researches that 75% of all the people watching gay themed (& gorgeous 🤪) SOAPS & t.v shows are streight females yesss??? Come on he is just every mother's & her bored housewifes cooger friends dreeeeeeeammmmmm 😅 SERIOUSLY HOW PERFECT iS THIS MAN? ans so humble as welllll. Am sooooooo inlove 💗💕❤💋💋💋💋💋💋
I'm confused by the fact that a few people on here have to quantify the fact they are "straight"............"married"..............sounds soooooo sanctimonious. Listen to his message and vote for that! He'll take care of his personal life himself. I don't care if the guy had three eyes and the fact that he's religious still doesn't bother this humanist! His message is TRUTH! He cares! That's all that matters to me. Go Mayor Pete!
@@charpyles8923 -- I love Pete's perspectives, too, but I feel most of us can see these self-defined characteristics of commenters show they're in a category not typically considered. I seldom hear any condescension in their remarks, and frankly it's good to learn that genuine, patriotic Americans can think sensibly. More power to the voices of everyday people who shout against those who would tyrannize our republic.
He is different from negative Democrat candidates that for every issue they want to dip their fingers. Pete is very articulate, he can discuss practically everything without diving into the issue or dipping his finger to agitate it. His critical thinking is brilliant even in one sentence, it explains all. He will be on the top pretty soon . Only he needs more exposures to all states so everyone knows his platform. In my opinion he can unite the divided country.. I will vote for him.
Pete is so unreal. He is thoughtful, insightful, demonstrates expressive clarity and projects a high level of convincing authenticity . I hope he survives this process.
@@hiddensurfer What I find very sad is that you write about something you either don't know what you're talking about or just want to smear dirt on an honest guy. Shame on you in any case.
@@bcnmanhattan5022 I, unlike you, did my homework ...he was in the closet most of his life. COWARD!!!.. like all you liberals who can't see the truth if it hit them in the face
These are really good questions and the answers that Pete gave are so genuine and sincere. May the underdog win this vicious race! I'm rooting for you!
Hypothetical Man What the fuck is the matter with you? If you saw an interview with a man interviewing a woman or vice versa would you automatically assume that they couldn’t help but to sleep with each other? Pete is in a committed and loving relationship. He’s clearly more mature than you, someone who has literally posted the same comments on almost every thread because you have nothing better to do in your life than spread homophobia
You guys, we support and are moved by Pete. We have to continue to advocate for him to people of color and fellow progressives that are talking smack about him so they can see that he’s the best candidate for the nomination. He is what our party and country needs.
A true (and very intelligent) American who served five years in the military willing to put his life on the line for his country. Unlike some who claimed heel spurs to save their own skin in lieu of their country's needs.
@@ems3832 lol 🤩 I understand where you are coming from but it is all the more reason to show respect & honor his desicion to come out in the first place..just think of how many closeted gay men in power are in office this minute all around the globe including Shia muslims dictatorships that you are'nt aware of....it takes so much gutt to come out while servinv in the U.S millitery for heaven sake🤪
All of that "coming out" stuff doesn't really impress me. It just doesn't. Mind you, I'm glad they do disclose it; so we can at least know and be forewarned. Bottom line though - I would never trust Buttigieg's judgment, knowing that he's not of sound mind, and therefore would never vote for him. @@PinkbubblegumPop
It has to be said that Jeffrey Masters is a supremely gifted interviewer -- he's obviously sympathetic to this candidacy, but he nevertheless doesn't shy away from asking the most difficult questions. I very much wish he could interview all of the other candidates on both sides of the aisle.
Nice interview. I am super impressed with Mayor Pete in every possible way. I remain hopeful that he maintains his momentum when debate season is upon us.
What a peaceful leader ! He is the Martin Luther King jr of our time. As a gay Canadian I must say that not only USA but the world needs him. What a great opportunity you American people have to give peace a chance.
Watching this video at this time (July 2024, five years later since it published) gives me hope that America is not doomed and there are light and consciousness coming from itself!
I hadn't heard about him until a few days ago (I'm from Denmark). And by now I've probably seen all on youtube accessible interviews and speeches with this sympatic and intelligent man. I really do hope that I'm looking at a future US president
This was a great interview - a note to the interviewer - MANY THANKS for asking the question about climate change - it is THE most important issue of the day, for everyone, all over the world. Who cares about immigration, their own pocketbooks, better education if we don't address the very issue that could be the end to civilization. Pete answered it well, and I look forward to his more detailed policy descriptions. Again, great interview, and great last question!
The good news for him is that the more people get to know him, the more they see not just the intelligence but also, the depth and the authenticity he brings to the table which is unique.
I have seen quite a few interviews with Pete Buttigieg andI think I figured out why he comes across as genuine: Because he is! And we all have a nose for artificiality, learned behavior and on the other hand intrinsically motivated and honest people, but when we need to pinpoint what exactly that difference is, we usually can't. What I observe with Pete Buttigieg, is the ease with which he answers questions, without too much thought in the moment, which absolutely doesn't mean thoughtless, on the contrary. He proves he contemplated all the issues and developed both an intellectual as well as an ethical and emotional opinion on those matters and he simply shares and conveys that in these interviews. And as he is as smart as they come, he simply overpowers and overwhelms with his sheer body of knowledge, his deep personal understanding of the subjects, his personal need to be bi-partisan without losing his true north and he is able to dissect any question, no matter how convoluted, to the bare metal of what within his frame of reference, is essential o him and what is debris and noise. And that is what makes him refreshing, super smart and fit for office. And luckily he speaks to my inner compass and it even helps me find my bearings or recalibrate my true north thanks to his ability to so easily break down complex issues to a humane size without oversimplifying it or ridiculing it. I'm not saying anybody can do this, it requires intellectual rigor, quick wit and emotional stability geared to that ethical compass in order to work. But a lot of people I think recognize what this means as they feel his words resonate within their system. From day one I thought I recognized something in him and now I'm sure. Lets make sure he becomes the new president of the United States! All I can do as a "foreign agent" is provide my feedback and share my views in support of him on the fora like RU-vid and others and illuminate falsehoods in these discussions. Great interview BTW!
My significant other and I are both in our 70's and think Pete is exactly what we need to have in the Whitehouse. His all inclusive attitude is refreshing. The Democratic party would do well having this bright star represent our future. By the way If we stop using defining labels and just refer to each other as people, the vibration of this world will raise and we can truly be in conjunct with what is taught in the bible LOVE your neighbor as you Love yourself. My partner is a 73 yr old heterosexual man and I'm 72 Bisexual woman (who can see this from both sides) if we're using labels. Go Pete...
Pete seems to be a very content person... He seems happy with his life and genuinely excited to make a difference. He's not bitter. No yelling or hurling insults. So grounded. Some will not want him because he's not "edgy" or angry enough. But he's ridiculously smart. I would love to see him debate. 😊
Such an articulate man. I find it somewhat uncomfortable how the interviewer continually makes reference to the term queer. While it may sit well with some members of my community, it’s not a word I actively own myself, while I completely respect how this is different for others. This man fills me with hope and excitement!
Yup, it seems that the word "queer" will be become normative in the 2020s (since the letters are getting to be too many LGBTQIA+). I still remember learning the word as a lad when it was a synonym for the word "strange."
Please watch this a couple of times - it is just amazing how eloquent & profound he is (& the interviewer) - oh God pleeeease blesss us with him in power!!!
I love Pete and am a big supporter, but I don't think he addressed the questions as directly as he has in some other interviews. Nevertheless, he remains a paragon of honesty and wisdom.
@@jbak87 One question I notice that he sort of sidesteps, which is unusual for him, is how he would deal with super-homophobic countries and leaders. I frankly don't think he's figured that one out yet. Or at least not mulled over it enough to give a straight (haha) answer.
@@zzzaaayyynnn I think he answered it when he talked about being invited to communities and groups that were hostile to him as a gay man, but due to his title (and status and power it endows) he was welcomed. Basically, as crappy as we've become under trump, the U.S. is still richer and has nukes. So, they're going to grit their teeth and roll out the red carpet, just like Western Europe did for Trump, who everyone hates.
@@zzzaaayyynnn Yes, he avoids controversial subjects where he should take a strong stand......milque-white toast.....people are getting fooled into thinking he is super progressive simply because he is gay. It bothers me tremendously that he says if he could have cut the "gay" out of him, he would have.....He is 37...does that not seem odd to anyone that a gay man would think that way growing up in the 90s......in the 40s, 50s, 60s etc maybe....he just seems way too conservative underneath....too much protestations of his perfect "normal" marriage....he is a gay man married to someone he loves! why the emphasis on how similar to middle class straight marriages it is!!! it can be whatever they want it to be.
@@jennifermackinnon6982 Obviously you're not a homosexual male in macho land. And the "obviously" is not because of your name. The interviewer mentions very clearly that even today he would not feel confortable (safe ?) holding hands with another man in THE SOUTH. The south: a whole (in size) country. And just holding hands!. And Pete is from Indiana where Pence was elected and Trump won. Please do try to understand the stigma and you may understand Pete's quarrels with himself. And then realize how brave he was, and now is.
He just gives me such hope for what our country can be again. No more endless news cycle of clickbait bullshit about pro/anti trump attacks. Back to real issues to make working american's lives better. Honestly the only candidate so far that's doing this. C'mon pete you've got my support!
Refreshing conversation with intelligence, a sense of humor and wisdom beyond his years. Having military experience is a huge plus for me, and currently Mayor indicates his ability to lead. He would have my vote for he is a personality that remains the same, rather addressing a crowd, or somebody one on one. This man has integrity and obviously stable.
Every single word that comes out of his mouth is mindful, thoughtful, considered, measured, intelligent, intentional, humble and kind. What a stark contrast to the person currently occupying the White House.
How does somebody thumb-down this video? I don’t get that. If you do not like LGBTQ people, why even click the play button and hear Pete’s discussion on it? Just my opinion.
I'm not a citizen, but I truly hope this young man is voted President in 2020. He will restore the USA's credibility and status overnight. It is time for the youngsters to take over - they have the most to lose from the short-sited attitudes of the older generation of politicians. Please guys - vote for him.
As a gay man who is almost 67 years old, I like best his inter-generational message. He speaks fOR me and TO me, and I am excited to support him with my time, my finances and my enthusiasm, the first time I've ever felt this for a Presidential candidate. Go Pete Go in 2020!
This is long but very relevant, so please read: On the topic of the Equality Act, I went to my local school board meeting a couple weeks ago to support the addition of sexual orientation and gender identity as protected groups in our school district's nondiscrimination policy for students and staff (because so far the federal and state governments have failed to act), and I was shocked awake. Maybe this is something you all already knew, but I kinda didn't. In case you were asleep like me, I gotta warn you--the crazy, blind sheep aren't just at Trump's rallies. The level of religious-extremist, hate-filled crazy I witnessed that night (some on the board) was like seeing a reenactment of the white mob following the Little Rock Nine into their high school in 1957: adults hurling disgusting insults and accusations at kids. The vitriol, fear, and misinformation they spewed was terrifying. For the last decade, we've been telling our LGBTQ+ youth that it's (mostly) safe to be yourself now, to come out and live your truth, and that they had it so much better than we did in the previous generations. For a small window of time, that was true, but ugliness is getting louder and bolder. I see it in my classroom, I see it online, and now I've seen it in the practice of my local government (in a blue state and district, by the way). We have to stop this trajectory NOW! Please, if you recognize the danger that Trump and his base represent, please, please recognize that focusing all of our outrage and disgust on him is misleading, because Mayor Pete is right: taking back the presidency in 2020 (or more ideally impeaching Trump and sending him to jail in 2019) won't fix anything because he's not the problem--he's the symptom. We have to take back every level of government, from the school board positions and mayoral seats, to the state legislatures and governorships, to Congress. Just taking back the presidency will be an empty victory. We need to win so decisively and on every level to force the Republican Party to reset its center and push back this hate that's gaining momentum. So, yes, please support Pete, but also support your local and state candidates by volunteering, donating, spreading the word, or (at the very least) voting. There is so much at stake.
This man is exactly what the country needs at exactly this time in history. His absolute lazier focus in every interview is incredibly impressive. That’s why he can get the things accomplished that he talks about - using intense focus, critical data, and incremental, evidenced-based steps to make it happen.
