Yeah danny maude is great at making his personal lessons simple to follow but i was (and still am a bit) having difficulty with spinning down the trail arm explanation…for me its more like my left arm is spinning down and my right sort of follows …i give up on completely getting it because ive improved a lot just by the left arm spinning down while keeping the wrist from “flicking “ ,keeping it flexed closed while keeping trail arm/elbow more tucked in (no chicken wing 😬) ..🤷🏼‍♂️

Excellent job Andy in explaining Pete Cowen's "spinning right arm" move! I've been working on this move for quite some time now and it definitely has improved my ball striking! In addition to the right hand pointing to the ball, I also feel that there is a "knuckles down" position with my left hand into impact! I like how you caution golfers to keep rotating the body with this arc move in order to get a better compression on the ball! Well Done Andy!!!

Hi Andy, the way i understand "spinning the right forearm" is as follows: 1. It is spinning of forearm only rather than full arm because you have set the elbow for internal rotation. If elbow has any external rotation then upper arm will also rotate. 2. Wrist can do two things flexion/extension and cocking/uncocking. In spinning the right forearm you do uncocking bit only while maintaing the flexion in the right wrist to create the necessary compression.

Love this. It confirms and matches the feeling I've been having using a different swing thought I've been using lately: I feel like I torque my arms and wrists counter-clockwise going back (trail arm faces away from target as you said) which basically forces the arms (and thus club) to rotate the other way (clock-wise) as the torque is released which shallows the club. It does require a different intent in the downswing though which to mean feels like I'm rotating my upper body hard throughout to prevent flipping ala DJ/Hovland. loving the feeling of tension it provides at the top too. My default swing is very loosy-goosy at the top so it's very radical feel for me which tells me I'm on the right path! :D

I have been trying this since the previous video and YES, this makes a huge difference. For the first time I seem to have a grasp on just how the ball should be struck. I no longer feel as though I am manipulating the hands in the hope I strike the ball correctly. It just seems to me that my hands are now far more passive. I think this video and the previous one has now put me on the right track - at long last! Thanks for running over this move again.

When I watched him on Danny Maude, Cowen said spin the right forearm nothing with the hand but keep the angle and he said the weight shift is a result of pushing the right side.. he said focus on spinningb it down with the right shoulder.. seems like quite a different explanation

Hey Andy, thanks for the explanation of “Turning the hands down”. At 2.14, you say that the right wrist is flexed, but it’s actually extended (THE WRIST IS IN A POSITION OF EXTENSION). I think a lot of the confusion expressed in some of the comments here stems from the word "spin." You don't spin your right arm; you pronate your right forearm, which creates downward pressure on your right wrist and hand. Personally, I have found it helpful to think of (rather, feel) this move as a more advanced version of Pete Cowen's celebrated axe drill. Practice that and this drill follows naturally.

Absolutely brilliant video Andy. I only have one question. In the dry drill when you are taking the hand back and have fingers to the sky, is this something you should try and feel with the club on the way back? I think this is the only thing I don’t feel all that well with the club in hand as opposed to the dry drill

Just subscribed yesterday and watched 3 vids on downswing and I just hit the ball with 60% speed and I hit 9 fwys and 4 greens for 9 holes.the other 5 greens was right on line but just short of the green. I've haven't played for 7 months after a bad accident to my lead hand. My question I have always squared the club with my lead hand. Are you suggesting that we should square the club face with the trail hand? I've had to weaken my grip of my lead hand and the V is pointing to the outside of my lead shoulder and my trail hand is point to my chin. This is the only way I can strike the ball without pain. Thank you for your instruction it is first class.

One of best coaching videos I have seen and one that fills in the gaps from Pete's instruction. I am now finding that i am getting much better compression on the ball and a more penetrating shot. One thing I am not sure about is that this is now inducing a slight over draw / hook. Presumably swing path & face angle needs fine tuning?
@andycartergolf
@andycartergolf 5 месяцев назад
Possibly getting the club a little stuck behind or you’re closing the face too much at impact but difficult to advise you specifically without seeing your swing
@teddywilliams2512
@teddywilliams2512 4 месяца назад
I've always done this, but also always struggled with open clubface and low-point issues. It's constantly fat and struck behind the ball and my clubface is 90% of the time open. You're explanation is exactly what I feel in my right hand/arm. I don't know why I'm struggling with the other issues I've described above
@Costigs01
@Costigs01 2 месяца назад
Both issues are probably linked. If you've got an open clubface, you're probably subconsciously dumping away the wrist angle in an attempt to square the clubface which is causing you to hit the ground early. Try moving your grip around to make it easier or more comfortable to close the clubface. If your body feels the clubface is more closed, it's less likely to subconsciously dump away the wrist angles to try square the face. I've suffered with this for a long time, that's how I fixed my open face and fat shots, hope it helps 👍 Additionally, fat shots could be caused by ball position being too far forward - means you catch the ball slightly out to in. Could also be that your weight is too far on your trail side. Give them all a try 👍

Andy, sometimes golf pro tuition is a bit like watching magic tricks. The hand drill demo was effective in showing what the right hand is doing - therefore the right arm must be ‘rotating’ anti-clockwise on the down swing to impact (right handers when clockwise is looking toward target) and the left arm rotates clockwise. So you’ll understand the confusion when the ‘wringing out the towel drill’ always appears to show the hands/arms rotating inward (thumbs toward thumbs) rather than outward? Or have I missed something? Be grateful for your guidance please. Pete Cowan is a world class coach and one of my go to for instruction.
@eJunkee
@eJunkee 4 месяца назад
Peter talks about spinning the arm not hand. Yes its confusing, its basically keep the right hand angle "hold the plate" on the way down as you "extend/straighten" your right arm as fast as possible. The two combo as you turn feels to him like spinning. This creates speed, delofts club and easier face control. This is part of the modern golf swing move prevalent theses days in the tour. Good luck!

I’m a really high handicapper and I tried learning the Pete cowen swing and I thought I had it but I didn’t get very good distance but the direction of the ball was great. I ended up giving up on the swing and tried to find something else. However about a week ago before a round I went to the driving range to warm up and on a whim I tried the swing again but this time I tried it with my feet together (based on a comment Pete said to you in another video). Holy cow! Not only was the swing effortless but it went the expected distance and to the target! I used the swing for the round that day and had my best round. That being said, I still need to practice doing it because it’s still not automatic and when I feel like I’m just a tad off I get less power and I feel like I’m not rotating enough or the timing is off. What are the chances of me being able to send you a video of my swing to tell me if I’ve got the swing right?

Ive seen Pete teach this technique, to one your other piers, I’ve trying to implement this technique into my swing. To say, easier said then done but I continue to improve. Big miss is when I don’t keep my wrist bent and release them to early. Sometimes I hit one or two fat or thin! Or I allow my elbow to fly which promotes a push to the right weak floaty ball flight. However, when I do it right, I feel, hear and see a professional sounding ball coming off the club face.

I like the concept, but I’m not surprised if people were confused by the term “spinning”. Nothing is really spinning. Except perhaps a bit of reverse rotation of the trail forearm, but I wouldn’t call it a spin. I saw the Danny Maude video with Cowen and even Maude seemed a bit confused.

Rotation is a spin. But spin doesnt have to be a lot. Its a terminology but hopefully this video helps give it a different view. Danny wouldnt be as familiar with the concept either so possibly he was listening to it for the 1st time too.

This was helpful, Andy. Pete described this right arm "spinning" move in another RU-vid video, and to be honest, the concept was - or is, quite confusing. It would be easy to translate this into a slamming or casting move which would be disastrous and not what Mr. Cowen would ever want. Regardless, it will take a lot of practice (of course) and at face value was a head scratcher to understand at first.

I am struggling with trying to achieve shaft lean and to stop flipping… this movement pattern you are explaining provides some help with the technique required. But I see the palm of your right hand facing away (toward the camera) at shaft parallel in your downswing then the right forearm rotating the palm down to the ground as the movement continues towards impact… is this the movement that you are detailing?
@ivwshane
@ivwshane 5 месяцев назад
For me, it feels like I never flip or release the trail wrist. It requires trusting that your club will get to the ball. It also requires proper rotation and timing. If you haven’t tried it yet, in another video Pete said amateurs should play with their feet together. Once I did that the swing felt very natural and effortless and I didn’t lose any distance and was on target way more than any other swing I’ve used.

Most golfers rotate their right arm open TOO MUCH. So, they have to rotate hard to close the club face. The best move is rotate the face CLOSED on the take away. Then, rotate it more closed on the down swing...

Andy, Can you tell me if the classic golf greats, like Woods, Nicklaus, Watson, Miller used this technique? As best I can tell, these players did not approach impact like you described. Woods seems to rotate through impact with his right arm rolling over his left after impact. I’m 63 and cannot learn the technique you describe in this video. I strike it very well letting rotating through impact but cannot swing any other way. (I don’t think Leadbetter taught Faldo this technique.) Curious of your thoughts. Thanks

Yes all players release the golf club and the right arm rotates around the swing arc just like it did on the backswing and the way back down to the ball. You're maybe misunderstanding the concept, but one thing people do misunderstand if that they think Pete is trying to coach them to hold it off, which is not the case. Look at Poulter, Westwood, McIlroy for example

To echo many others, Cowan’s manoeuvre explained in simple terms that make sense. My only concern for the average golfer (me) is not overdoing the downward lunge and hitting behind the ball. If your body action doesn’t follow the desired path that it was will happen. Cowan days this is automatic - maybe for an athletic player but not natural for everyone.

A good golf coach knows how to interpret this into coaching. Most amateurs dont im afraid

A great drill and nice explanation. However those with limited range of movement may struggle with this and stand up in the backswing to create these angles so be cautious this isn't for everyone 👍

Absolutely right. But most swings we coach are subject to a players mobility

This only works for me, if I right side bend correctly. No amount of rotation, or downward pressure works for me ( I'll top it or early extend )without.

The other point Pete made, when explaining spinning the arm, was that there had to be pressure on the shaft at last parallel. It does make a difference.

I’m more of a left arm puller,I’m interested in your awareness of the left arm while spinning your right forearm down .when ever I try this new method I lose the feeling of my left arm being involved Please give me your opinion. Thanks

I would keep the left arm behind the shoulders, or feel like the bicep stays tight to the chest

I get all this, but struggle to translate it to a driver swing as can’t comprehend compressing it on an upward impact

Bloody ‘ell … I’ve just had an ‘Ah ha’ moment! Does this principle remain with driver too? (I’m a bit of a slicer and inconsistent striker with irons) Thanks Andy …

Thanks for explaining what spinning the right arm down is , and how best to accomplish it. I haven't had the opportunity to try to put it into play yet, but plan to try it based on your instruction. Any concern with this palm and fingers down move that it could be overdone? Would it not be the right type of move that someone that's bad shot tends to be on the low side, or someone that hits 7-8* downward angle of attack on their irons? or Would those types of things not be a concern for this type of movement pattern?
