I survived 9/11 too. The planes only missed my building by 400 miles and two states.

He was called out by the NY times who confronted him, after which he admitted the lie. He did not spontaneously admit it. He also has been saying this between 2002-2011

My fav part of this is at 11:12 when Jimmy silently moves Pete's mic to his mouth and they share a goofy look.

I was in fourth grade and lived in The Bronx during 9/11 for years when people asked me if I was there, I would say no, I felt like I had no part in this tragedy. It wasn't until years later when younger people asked me what I remember from that day that I realized my own experiences were part of a much bigger picture involving every New Yorker who lived or visited the city that day. That's why I never understood the need to lie.

Steve was also on flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania. He stopped the highjacking before it could reach the White House however, sadly, he couldnt control the plane. It crashed, and he died along with everyone on board. But he did defeat all 5 highjackers and then escape tower 2 so still pretty wild story.

I was telling my father who worked for Merrill Lynch this story and the first thing he said was lynch does not have an office in the towers. He should have been called on it right away.

It shows a lot of kindness and empathy on Elijah Wood's part that he came into the conversation late, asked to hear the recording, and despite the consensus being that Rannazzisi is a prick, he doesn't pile on and calmly points out how ruthless the internet can be towards people who make a mistake. Doesn't take sides and simply offers perspective on the other side of the issue. He gave hope to middle earth and now is doing the same for this world, and I salute him.

Weird part is, if you were in the city that day and you saw it all happen, that’s almost just as powerful and good of an origin story

I met a guy who said he barely survived the Fukushima tsunami. Upon further questioning, he reluctantly admitted he had been in Japan *the year before* it happened. I've always wondered how many people he "allowed" to believe he'd really dodged a bullet.

I love Jimmy and Pete's big brother/little brother dynamic. I noticed that Jimmy looks over at Pete often in this clip. I think he's checking to see if Pete's okay with all this 9/11 talk because it's a tough subject for him.

I was there with steve working on a huge financial deal on that dreadful day in september, I can still remember him pushing me to the ground seconds before the plane penetrated the building, i was terrified and just wanted to curl up into a ball and lay there but steve grabbed me and threw me over his shoulder and ill never forget his brave words "YOU ARE NOT GONNA DIE HERE TODAY PAL NOT ON MY WATCH" he then carried me down 54 flights of stairs to the safety of the street then turned and ran back into the tower to save more people....steve ia a true american hero and the bravest man i have ever known.....

I just heard his whole apology thing on Howard Stern's show. I actually felt sorry for him while I was listening to that. He made it sound like it was a story that he couldn't control. Then I found this clip, and I'm hearing detail after detail, and he just keeps piling on the story with tiny facts. He clearly researched some of these things so he could embellish his story. Hearing his apology interview first, THEN listinging to this makes his lie 100 times worse.

He is obviously a pathological liar. He probably started telling it privately to people he met just to be the center of attention and over time he had told it so much that on some level he believed it himself and was comfortable telling it even publicly. After you tell a story a bunch of times you're not even really recalling the event, you're telling the story of the last time you told the story, but how could he not know that eventually someone would point out that he never worked there?

Yeah I also survived 9/11, my parents were 5000 miles away and I wasn't born for another year and a half so I deffo got very lucky

Pete is being incredibly generous here. Steve HAS been funny at times in the past, but the guy made this 9/11 story a crutch of who he was (as evidenced by the information that came out after Elijah Wood enter the discussion) almost immediately after the attack. He used the story all over the place, which caused NYT to investigate & when they do the thing where they call to ask for a comment, he basically decided to get ahead of the story by "coming clean". Oh, and he thought entering the Comedy Central show Roast Battle, which was hosted by Jeff Ross would help resuscitate his image, but he was SO BAD at coming up with jokes (plus it was sorta for unknown comedians), he embarrassed himself even more

Coming back to watch this video is as important as watching the Christmas story at Christmas time
