The first and second verse is about him..The last verse was dedicated to Trouble T Roy..One of Heavy D's back up dancers who had just passed away. .The name of the song is an acronym for Troy..
Great reaction!! Pete Rock is one of our generation’s super producers. On par with DJ Premier, Marley Marl, Diddy, Timbaland, Dr Dre, RZA etc. One of my favorite joints he produced was Down With the King by Run DMC ft Pete Rock & CL Smooth. Back in the day if you didn’t have a Pete Rock remix you wasn’t hittin.✌🏾
One of the greatest duos of all time, they have so many bangers. Pete rock is in my top 3 producers, he influenced so many others after him (Kanye being one of them). Pete rock also produced for many others outside the group (Nas, biggie, Jay z, Kanye, etc , etc). For other Pete rock and c.l smooth songs, check out: "Lots of loving" "Searching (remix)" "Take you there"
Straight Lyracist. This was his tribute to Trouble T-Roy who died in a freak accident, may he rest in peace 🙏🏾 T- hey R- eminisce O- ver Y- ou He danced for Heavy-D, may he also rest in peace. You should check out The Overweight Lover himself. Heavy-D was Hip Hop, RnB, but my favorite was the dancehall collab with Super Cat. Dem No Worry Me
One of the best hip hop tracks ever in every respect. Deep themes, layered meanings, humor, sadness, community, family, friendship and loss. Grief. And that insanely perfect sample: a jazz saxophone player (Tom Scott) covering an incredibly emotionally psychedelic rock classic (“Today” by Jefferson Airplane). Just genius. And that shifting boom bap beat.
Yes, the last verse of this song was a tribute to Trouble T-Roy, a member of Heavy D & The Boyz, who tragically died while on tour. Heavy D and Pete Rock are cousins. Please react to Pete Rock and CL Smooth song "Straighten it Out".
CL was rhyming about his life. But it was dedicated to Troubke T Roy who was one of the Boyz from heavy D and the Boyz. He died when he fell off stage during rehearsal in 1990. Btw...do heavy D and the Boyz...but with Pete Rock and CL, do straighten it out or lots of lovin'
This song came out a few weeks b4 my mom passed when I turned 21. This was on rotation from CT to NC on way to bury her in her home state. This had a very personal meaning for me
One of the BEST Hip Hop songs EVER MADE! 💯 Damned few songs are capable of being word for word covered until the next 100 years is up. THIS is one of them! 💯
The song is about T Roy who was one of the dancers in the group (hip hop groups had dancers back then). When I was a kid? This was like the summer anthem when your friends or family died..
Super underrated duo, emcee and producer. Mecca and the soul brotha is a classic, but when i wanna vibe out and feel good, i slap The Main Ingredient.❤
I forgot how tight these verses are...When this came out, it was an instant classic. Everybody who has lost someone they loved and looked up to can relate. 💝
Yo, I know Pete personally. When this video first came out back in the day, I was screaming at the TV, "THAT'S PETE! THAT'S PETE! Oh A rare Hip Hop memory! Word.
Although it’s now Christmas time as I’m writing this comment but, here’s a little Easter egg for you; Being that this song first came out April 2, 1992, that line you heard from 2:59 to 3:04,(“Took me from a boy to a man So I always had a father when my biological didn’t bother”) would be sampled later on by Shaquille O’Neal in a song called Biological Didn’t Bother(,Released October 17, 1994,). From his second album, Shaq Fu: Da Return. And like this song, it’s based on a true story.
Been requesting ths for a YR‼️ The acronym of the title is Heavy Ds dancer who passed. My generations 1st hiphop death. Super unexpected and traumatic for us. I be like how has she done so much Heavy D and hasn't done Pete Rock and CL ⁉️🤷🏾♀️ TY🙏🏾 #TROY💜
I love the sample of that song I never cared about Today. There is also this old Jazz song I heard that the Bestie boys sampled for one of tjeir songs. I’m going to find the old Jazz song Tje B-Boys sampled too..
Wrecks-N-Effects - New Jack Swing. The Lost Boys - Music gets Me High. KMD - Peach Fuzz RUN-DMC - You talk too much & Peter Piper. Kool G Rap & Polo - Road to Riches
Yea, baby girl, that’s old school Pete Rock and CL Smooth were down with HeavyD. What the song talks about is one of the dancers named Trouble T. Roy who died in a freak accident.
I always hated when people older than me would say, “What?! You haven’t heard this before?” Now I’m the old guy. I’ve seen more young kids bop to this lately. This is an all timer
I blame NWA & Two Live Crew for the death of cerebral rap. Gangsta rap and its offsprings -- trap rap, mumble rap etc destroyed the purity of rap. React to Gjetto Boyz My minds playing tricks on me. And Coolio, See you when you get there
Don't get much better than Pete Rock and CL. Both actually rap but CL handles more of it, but Pete Rock is actually more known as a DJ and produced. Pete has produced for a lot of other acts, most notably on Nas classic album Illmatic. A great rabbit hole to go down.
