“T.R.O.Y.” is the most impactful Hip Hop song I’ve ever heard. Crazy thing is, I couldn’t imagine it not having the 14 second prelude. Fade to black. Then that horn. That’s heaven on earth.

@@a.m.g.116 Oh yeah. All of those are iconic as well. There are so many other beats with those qualities only they're not songs that get universal praise outside of older hip-hop heads. "Get A Hold" from Tribe to me is in that same school. Beats Rhymes and Life has for a long time been mixed amongst fans of Tribe, but Dilla's fanbase since he died grows so much every year on the web that its iconic in its own right.

Let this sink in...Pete Rock was only 21 years of age when he produced this timeless classic track. Pete Rock is the epitome of the statement: "Powerful Creativity Comes From A Broken Heart." He was able to masterfully channel his heartache into what I consider to be one of the greatest tracks in all of contemporary music, regardless of genre. I remember going down to my college town's record store to get the T.R.O.Y. cassette single and I couldn't wait to unwrap it and pop it into my Sony Walkman. As I walked down the street back to my dorm room that day, I damn near cried because I knew as a 19 year old that I was listening to a classic that I would play countless of more times for the rest of my life. #TheGoldenEraOfHipHop

Its crazy... T.R.O.Y. was the song that made Hip-Hop *make sense* to me. Before that, it was a thing that just happened around me. I remember songs getting occasional radio play like Paul Revere, or anyone who was any sort of car bass early adopter banging Children's Story. I remember the impact of RUN DMC, LL, Kool Moe Dee, Kane, and Rakim. I remember how popular Kid & Play and Hammer were. A lot of the culture was going in in the background of my life, but I didn't embrace it. Then this video came on one night. Had to be when it came out, because it was shown in its entirety and not the condensed for time thing videos usually get after a bit of rotation. I can't explain how or why, but the sample, the rhymes, the video's aesthetics, even the time of night... it all just clicked. It was kinda like that moment in Blues Brothers at the revival tent: "THE BAND!!" I had a lot of catching up to do with things I only had a passing interest with beforehand and the then-current contemporary joints. And it was all due to this song.
