Today, May 3 2009, is Pete Seeger's 90th birthday. I can't make the big concert at Madison Square Garden to celebrate it, so this is my small tribute to him, an amazing man with an amazing wife, and an amazing life. This was performed at the "We Are One" Presidential Inaugural Concert, January 19, 2009.
The song was written by Woodie Guthrie in 1940, first recorded by him in 1944 at Folkway Records, but not released until 1951.
RIP Pete Seeger May 3, 1919 -- January 27, 2014, Toshi Seeger July 1, 1922 -- July 9, 2013
Discussion, pro and anti Seeger, this song, government, whatever, etc is allowed. However, exceedingly vulgar or hateful comments, and obvious trolling with no reasonable intellectual value, will be deleted.

I love how Pete slipped in the radical verses that get left out of most versions of the song. This is a great American song not because it sings the praises of the country and the people, but because in its full version it has the guts to call a spade a spade and tell us we're not all the way there yet.

I was not aware Pete Seeger passed until now after listening to the song: "This land is your land". I had lunch with him and a few others in New Jersey when I visited the USA in 2013 from South Africa. He sang one song for us with his type of guitar. May you rest in peace, Pete. You served God's purpose in your generation.

When my daughter was in first grade, her school played a "patriotic tune" every morning over the PA system. I introduced her to this song, asked her if they ever played it, and discussed the backstory. She approached the Principal and asked to have it added to the "patriotic list" Unwittingly the Principal agreed. In 2018, as a college student, she was leading a "social advocacy DACA support" event on the streets of NYC, handed out words to the song and led members of a whole new generation in singing this with enthusiasm. Plant the seeds early and often!

I had the great pleasure to interview Pete Seeger around 1980 for our college radio station, WRPI. Jackie Alper, who sang with Pete and the Weavers, had a a show on WRPI and suggested I go talk to him. He was in a park in Albany where he had sailed with his sloop the Clearwater, and was giving a public demonstration on how to bend wood using a steam box to build your own boat. For all his fame, he was a very non-pretentious guy. I've always liked Bruce Springsteen as well and have so much respect for Bruce's publicizing Pete Seeger to a new generation through his Seeger Sessions recordings.

@@adamwsaxe yes it was written during the war but he wrote other songs with lyrics that were clearly anti-fascist and anti-Hitler. This does not have such lyrics. The more common thought is it was a reaction to the changes in our lifestyle and freedoms coming out of the depression and into the restrictions of war. Wiki even states it as a reaction to the sacharine God Bless America by Irving Berlin. And it was apparently not released to the public until way after the war was over.

@@kennethkearns2901 No, this song talks about the injustices of the system we live in, where those with money have everything, while the majority are left with breadcrumbs. America has always been like that, it's ingrained into the system of capitalism, injustice and class division. Pete Seeger was a communist. He saw the injustices and he wanted to fight them. His way of fighting was by singing beautiful songs that pointed out the hypocrisy that the supposed land of the free is only free for those at the top, while everyone else have to work their asses off everyday to survive. That's not freedom, that's slavery.

More like there are those who struggle for a lifetime, those are the insignificant ones. The ones who as soon as they start breaking down are thrown out and replaced receiving no gratitude for their work. The ones most alienated by our system. Collectively indispensable for the system, but individually worth nothing. Together we have the force to completely shut down the system. The rich business owners would have nothing if it weren't for the work we've done for them. But in return we get only a fraction of the worth we create. When the union's inspiration through the workers' blood shall run, There can be no power greater anywhere beneath the sun; Yet what force on earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one, But the union makes us strong. Solidarity forever, comrade!

I’m not American, but I watch a lot of American and global politics. To say things in my home country, the Netherlands, are a mess, would be an understatement. The same goes for the world as a whole. Not only the pandemic, but also climate change, inequality, homophobia, racism and poverty. Over the past two years, I’ve watched this video over and over and it has given me many different emotions. I have felt melancholic and sad about the state of the world, knowing what it was and could be. But it has also made me hopeful and determined. We, whether it’s the Netherlands, Europe or the US, can achieve incredible things when we work together. At times, I feel desperate and hopeless, but I can’t and won’t give up on humanity. What goes around comes around, we’re all in this together. It’s my strongest, deepest belief and I’ll always fight for that.

I challenge anyone to find a better example of a purpose driven life than Pete Seeger. He devoted his long and glorious life to the causes he believed in from opposing Hitler and fascism to the civil rights movement to cleaning up his beloved Hudson River, to the occupy movement of 2011 and we are all better off because of him. You are mistaken. . From Atlantic Magazine. Pete Seeger's anti-war performances from those years are revolting. He and his musical colleagues sang anti-war songs in 1939-41 because, in the Soviet Union, Stalin had decided that an alliance with the Nazis was a good idea; and the order to support Stalin had gone out to every Communist Party in the world; and Pete Seeger was, in those days, a good Communist.

I love this song and I almost get tears in my eyes but I would be remiss not to think of the feelings of our great First Nations People, called the Indians, many people, many tribes, many cultures. I know there history and suffering that the coming of the White people brought. It was a terrible clash of cultures. Maybe is was not intentional, sometimes it was but it happening, it happened. I always wanted to write some verses for the First Nations so their part of the story would be recognized and honored. +The Best Purple I have always wanted some new verses that reflect the Red People's perspective. You got me started, thanks! I never feel totally comfortable sing this song anymore as it is. The European Invasion Colonization because of it's core religious belies and twisted skewed world view that was totally Euro-centric and falsely jingoistic actually followed a heretical version of the religion they claimed to follow. It was steeped in an egocentric, euro-centric and arrogance view that their culture and tradition trumped all others. This world view based on Nationalistic and religious\us dogmas was disastrous for the First Nations who were ill prepared to deal with the European Ideas, diseases and weaponry.

Some aspects of communism would have worked had it not been the element of greed and lost for power that drove the elite in the party. It failed miserably and Russia today and North Korea are a testimony to the worst possibilities that can result when bad people take a good idea and before and twist it so they can manipulate and control the masses and resources for egotistical ends. China has somehow started to move forward even though they made the same mistakes and now we are making those mistakes. The foundations our country and it's initial values are good and well intentioned but greedy bad people have taken power and twisted our democracy and the ida of capitalism into an ugly thing. It now works for the politically powerful and those who control business, and the very wealthy who are totally out of touch with common salt of the earth humanity. They do not in my estimation have the general welfare of the nation in mind of on the board room table. Any political system or religions system can become corrupt and evil given the worst of humanity gets a hold of those institutions and uses them for profit, and to control political, economic and religious power over peoiple. . This land is not your land or our land, it's their land and anyone who does not see that is a slave to the propaganda machine that is dumbing down the country, the educational systems and medias. It's about ultimate control. after witnessing the last two administrations and now seeing this one get started I no longer trust the political system or the Business cabals. I just try to live right and treat other decent, honestly and with kindness. I am neither rich nor poor, independent and though deeply thoughtful and spiritual have ceased to affiliate myself with any organized religion. What I see is tragic and we may actually be in the twilight years of our national existence as a democratic republic. The lands and the waters belling to no one, not any one group or creed. They are gifts from the Creator that should be shared and cherished by all. We do not own them, we belong to them and one day our duct will return to Mother earth and our Waters to the Great Waters and then our spirits will have to answer for our words and action in this life. Both the rich and the poor , the great and the small. I thank you for your astute comment.

I agree with you o that point. Communism failed because it has no room for divergent thinkers, therefore were intolerant of a diversion for the purist ideology. Any political system or religion can go that way. In that way all systems that promote a single narrow line of orthodoxy can be come dangerous to it's own people and become top heavy eventually crumpling in on itself through it's own arrogance and lack of vision. Humans tend to be like that. Right now there is a cultural war in our country by two purists factions with many of us independent moderate salt of the earth live and let live people in the middle. Thanks for your feedback. I agree with you about artists that sing about things they have little or no first hand experience with. I had been to Russian in the 1970s. I was with a student group that was planning to protest in Red Square the persecution of Christian Minorities in the USSR. We were arrested and thrown out of the country. You had to see it to believe it and see the impact that Communism had on a nation and people. It was bleak, cold and stark. One could go to parts of the US and see a somewhat similar screen. It's all perspective and location. Seeing the news of the previous weeks one wonders who is telling the truth? Can politicians, corporate cabals or even the median be trusted and can we be assured that the general welfare of the American People is forefront in the motives of these entities. I watch and pray and each day ask that I be a better man today than I was yesterday. Thanks for the feedback! Have a good close to your week. Edited, sorry for the typos!

It'd help your cause if you used the language and grammar correctly. Btw - they didn't name themselves Indians. It's also insanely ignorant to look at the history of humanity and decide that it started for the folks here after 1620 or so. They had history before 1620. As does the world. I find myself at 'interesting' places; I point out to people that the Natives have had it the hardest and worst in the U.S. And get berated by black people who say African-Americans have had it the worst here. Intelligent, educated people. It's important to recognize that the natives here had a long history. Full of violence, no different than any human population. The history of the European 'tribes' who settled here have a LONG history of evil towards one another. Between my Irish, Scottish and English ancestry I can't imagine the possibilities of what they did to each other. Random - I'm up in the Northeast, so I do appreciate the early cooperation between the natives and settlers.

Saw Pete many times... all precious. He kept us all going. Saw him with Arlo, saw him with so many others. I loved his stories that led up to songs. Arlo is retired now. This song unites us. May we be united... may the USA continue as a democracy.

I remember working with a guy who did sound for these summer concerts in Westchester, NY and one of the concerts they had Pete Seeger. I think part of what made him so popular, and so well liked, was the fact that he was always so approachable and down to earth. Now that's not to take away from all the things he's done for "the underdog", which was ALOT. This includes all that he's done through the years with the sloop Clearwater to get the Hudson river cleaned up and even before that many things about civil rights and the war issues, particularly Viet Nam. They say that music is the universal language (some say it's math) and it is. The style and the language of music might be different in different countries, but you can't change the notes or all the other parts of what we call music. I just wish I could have gotten to know him a bit more. I also hope that we can keep him alive through his music for decades to come and that may be hard to do. A lot of the older music in the class of country (please no countrified rock), folk, and bluegrass is dying in many parts of the country. Much of the so called "country in the south has gotten far away from it's country roots with all the electric instruments, heavy percussion, and loud playing. That's IMHO.

We were on weekend break from summer camp at Fort Drum and we drove to Montreal. Walking the Blvd. downtown to my surprise Pete Seeger was performing and I was able to get seats. The legendary icon brought the house down with his performance and audience participation. That was back in the 60's and remembered like it was yesterday.

I read just a few of the comments and I am so ashamed that we continue to put blame on any or a President. Our country can not get better until all put their differences away and understand we are all in this good bad or indifferent. We are not all so different, this land is made for you an me. However we must take responsibility for all our actions.

I think you misunderstand the song. This song is saying literally that the land and Wealth of America belong to all who live there and for some to take more than others of that great wealth shouldn't be respected Woodys intent is clear with the lines; 'I saw a relief office ect' and 'I saw a great high wall there ect' . Disagree with the premise all you like but this was the intent of the song.

Knew Pete well from Clearwater coffeehouse and Clearwater festivals. From what I can see, this is the only recording that has all of the unabridged verses-the ones the song was really about. Wonderful that they could be sung at an inauguration and sad that now those words will be stifled again. One step forward and two steps back.

This land is your land, this land is my land From the California to the New York island From the Redwood Forest, to the gulf stream waters This land was made for you and me As I went walking that ribbon of highway I saw above me that endless skyway And saw below me that golden valley This land was made for you and me I roamed and rambled and I followed my footsteps To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts And all around me , a voice was sounding This land was made for you and me When the sun comes shining, then I was strolling In the wheat fields waving and dust clouds rolling The voice was chanting as the fog was lifting This land was made for you and me This land is your land and this land is my land From the California to the New York island From the Redwood Forest, to the gulf stream waters This land was made for you and me When the sun comes shining, then I was strolling In wheat fields waving and dust clouds rolling The voice come chanting as the fog was lifting This land was made for you and me

I adore how happy Pete looks in this recording, but I doubt, he, as a socialist, thought that this was when America had made it. He knew there was much work to be done, that a government like Obama’s was never going to be the end of America’s troubles, not by a long shot. But he had gone through a long career, having once been framed as a criminal for protesting segregation, to now performing at the imagination of a black man as the president of the United States. Yes, the road ahead was long and yes, there were perhaps centuries of struggle to come until America was truly the land of liberty and justice for all, but goddammit, we were making progress, and sometimes, that progress, just that continuing desire to make our land better, was enough. And so, in singing this song, adding back in all of those crucial verses that could have gotten him and Woody thrown in jail all those years ago, seeing the public embrace these words, that America, and all of the Earth, can be a place that we can all truly share, where we can all truly be equal, and truly be happy, Pete Seeger was truly happy as well.
