Located on a small island, Peter and Paul Fortress is the first castle built by Peter the Great at the same time as founding of the new city of St. Petersburg. The fort was once used as a prison for political prisoners, and as a religious place at another time. Currently this fortress is an important tourist complex in St. Petersburg where you can see the Cathedral of St. Peter the Apostle, different galleries, museums and the beautiful view of the river.
