The Relic is another great underrated film, I love it. Read parts of the novel by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, I instantly enjoyed it. First read it in highschool, I believe a year ago. I might get it from Amazon.
I think this is my favorite “new” Chris Stuckmann review. He was critical of it while also being extremely kind to the film. I feel like lately he’s been avoiding being harsh on movies (I understand why) but I feel like he’s found the perfect balance with this one.
@@sarastuevevliet4327 he said a few videos back that he’s going to be directing a movie of his own and it’s not very professional to be trashing on movies others make while he makes his own movies. So it’s completely understandable. I just feel like this video was perfect in being critical, while also praising the movie for what it is.
He was meaning he wasn’t going to go the Hilariocity route anymore where he did nothing but dump on the films. Or his F reviews where he would go on angry rants. He said that he came to recognize that even the “worst” movies had a lot of effort and even love poured into them. And every movie has fans. Even the ostensibly “bad” ones. I don’t think he said he couldn’t be critical sometimes. He just said he was not feeling it for going on angry tirades about how awful a certain movie was. Which is why he no longer does the grades.
That is true and also his costar Samuel L. Jackson who would voice Frozone in Disney's The Incredibles was in another Shark Film Deep Blue Sea. But yes Craig T. Nelson not only Voiced Bob Parr AKA Mr. Incredible from Disney's Incredibles but he fought a Shark Monster in Creature, a corrupt cop in Turner & Hooch with Tom Hanks, fought Carl Weathers best known for Apollo Creed in The Rocky Films in the movie Action Jackson, worked with Lynda Carter in Wonder Woman, and he even worked with Tom Cruise. The Ending to Creature was very Dismal because as you saw Kim Cattrall's character was sad by the loss of Robin her pet Sea Lion to that monster, but Mr. Incredible destroyed The Shark Monster by causing it to explode just too bad he didn't break The Shark Monster like a Toothpick. I just wish that Robin had survived just like how The Dolphins in Jaws 3D survived and that The Ending to Creature wasn't Dismal but a little lighter like The Endings to The Jaws Movies and The Beast. That Shark Man was scary but not as scary as that Bigfoot from Abominable 2006, who do you think would win in a fight between The Shark Man from Creature and that Bigfoot from Abominable.
I never watched Creature, but I was OBSESSED with The Beast. The book and the miniseries were why I became obsessed with giant squids, so much so that my first and only tattoo is a giant squid.
I've only seen The Beast miniseries somewhere in my late teen years and thought it was pretty lame. But yeah squids are fascinating and I can see how that can carry a movie/ miniseries that may not be good on other levels 🍻
YES! The beast terrified me in the book and one of the reasons I developed a scare of sea monsters. My first and only tattoo is a great white shark, but a giant squid also terrfies just as much. The medusa level in Ecco the Dolphin game is ingrained in me as one of the scariest moments.
i grew up in Grays Harbor, WA, and we were so sure the town of “Graves Harbor” in The Beast was based off where we lived. loved to get scared by that miniseries this as a kid. still can’t think about giant squids in any body of water without getting uncomfortable
Bro, I was like "is Chris uploading Halloween videos he didn't upload last year?". Completely gaped the fact that it's October and Halloween is coming. Year just feels like a massive blur to me.
The fact that Stan Winston designed the creature really makes me want to see this now. I absolutely loved his work on predator and wrong turn and the relic
Speaking of good candidates for remakes, I always thought The Last Starfighter would be a great choice. With arcade consoles having evolved into full blown massive online multiplayer sagas, it would be super easy to modernize the script. The special effects of are dated, but the story's appeal about an average gamer being recruited into a galactic peacekeeping force is as fresh as ever.
I used to watch vhs tapes with trailers for this. I never watched it and forgot it until watching this video. I can hear that VCR reeling now, thank you for that, Chris :’ -)
A couple of years ago I had remembered this movie, it came in flashes of a shark being able to walk in some sort of sunken ship, I thought for a while it must have been a product of my imagination or a dream because I kept describing it to people and no one remembered it either. But thank goodness for the internet because one day after looking for it I finally found it. What a relief, I wasn’t going crazy after all, so glad that you also saw it and now are reviewing it.
I'm glad to see this mini series covered! It was a great to see Stan Winston's crew were behind this fantastic monster that made me hyped watching each episode!!! Thanks for the review and sharing its on DVD! Gonna buy it!!!
This is why I love your reviews. Heck the IMDb scores, heck the general public opinion-- you find something good about almost everything and appreciate some angle, not just the film as a whole. Overall, films should be entertaining, but even when they aren't, you can appreciate the time and the craftsmanship of certain departments.
I remember when this one came out in 1998 when I was 12. My friends and I were Peter Benchley fans, so we all watched it when it came out. I watch a rerun of it on the Sci-Fi channel (before it was Syfy) but still it's been about 15 years or so. I should give that one a re-watch.
Can you review "The Beast"? It's a giant squid miniseries, also based on a book by Benchley. It came just before this series, and it's the reason "Creature" exists. The series has amazing practical effects and is simply great, with a great cast and a lovely slow pace. I love it so much. It's a gem that has been forgotten. It's the best monster "movie" next to Jaws in my opinion, which is also written by Benchley. It has a magical feeling to it, and I guess that's partly because the Giant Squid is such a majestical creature. One of the world's greatest mysteries. 🐙
STUMBLED ACCROSS THIS ON CABLE ONE TIME BACK IN THE EARLY 2000s with my dad, we thought it was a werewolf movie at first but it was a badass shark creature movie wich was like heaven for me cuz I was so into shark movies at the time, i was actually thinking about this film earlier because of king shark from suicide squad but now here is Chris stuckman reviewing that same movie omfg!!!!!!!
Duuuuuuude!! I saw this years ago, had fragmented memories of it, and have been trying to figure out what it was for such a long time! Thank you, Chris!
I've been trying to find this movie for the longest time and i'm so thankful you talked about it. The Creature (the actual monster) scared the crap out of me and left a lasting impression. Thanks as always Chris!
I totally forgot about this movie. I remember I was camping with my family and we had this old tv that was able to pick up like five channels where we were staying and this was playing on it. We were obsessed because it was the first time I'd seen a movie with these kind of effects and since we were camping at a lake, it scared the crap out of me. The idea of a shark, human, dolphin hybrid creature was so cool to me at the time but also a whole bag of nope. I haven't seen it since then but I'll have to rewatch it now.
Crazy thing - saw this too as a kid, but I would have never found out what it's called or who directed it. Even the cast was lost in memory. Only thing I could remember all these years was the bipedal shark and that nostalgic feeling. Now you came around the corner with THIS. Thanks man, you never know what you gonna get from good ol' Stuckmann.
Thank you for covering this movie. My brothers and I definitely reference this movie occasionally and I have never talked with anybody else who have indicated watching it.
Thank you thank you thank you!!!! This movie has such a special place in my heart. I wasn’t allowed to watch anything scary as a kid due to really terrible nightmares, but this was acceptable due to it being on TV and I’ve never stopped thinking about it. Can’t wait for a remake!
This film has stayed in my mind since I saw it as a little boy. For a while I thought I imagined it then I rediscovered it as an adult. I still love the creature design.
Wow, Thank you for blast from the past moments, specially seeing the ad for it again. I was a lucky kid to have my own TV in my bedroom when this came out.
Speaking of the great Stan Winston, you should check out Pumpkinhead, which came out about 87',88' or so. He not only designed the creature, he directed it.
Wow, I nearly forgot about this film. I remember watching it all the time as a kid, a teen, and an adult. One of those under appreciated monster movies that I wish got more attention; like Pumpkinhead, The Relic, and even Tremors. But I don’t think this movie even has a cult following. So thanks Chris to bringing THE CREATURE some spot! I love practical effects monsters! (and Gus in one of his first roles I believe? Aka Giancarlo)
Remember getting this at VHS back in the day. Got it all mixed up with ”the Beast” and I was really disappointed😂 Also, fun fact; the Creature makes several appearances in the PC-game ”Blood” as an enemy. Thanks for a great vid. Greetings from Sweden🇸🇪
FINALLY someone tells me the name of this movie, it's been stuck in the back of my head for over 20 years... Thanks Chris. Also I have to agree that a remake of this in a 100 minutes timeframe would be awesome and I am not even a fan of horror movies :-)
I've never heard about this movie before. And now I know what I'm gonna watch on this Halloween. Thanks a lot dude, I do like your videos and you're so great in that stuff.
I really liked this mini series back in the day. Love my creature features and this one gave me more then knew I wanted. Will have to watch it again now :)
Genuinely wouldn’t mind a channel where Chris just talks about Halloween stuff all year round, it’s part of my October tradition to binge your October reviews man 😄
Thanks Chris, I was a fan of the beast as well. There were quite a few 90's mini series that strayed. Cut down they would have been a decent 90 minute movie watch. Late eighties and nineties television suffered greatly from editing issues. Scenes missing in movie edits was humorous as well. Great stuff and great channel.
I remember watching this movie so long ago at my grandmas house and I loved it. I'm glad you made this video because I would've never remembered the name of it.
I worked at a Blockbuster Video from 1998-1999. The ad that Chris included was featured on our screener tapes that we had on constant play in the store. The two lines "You go after that thing, you're insane," and "WHATEVER IT IS, DESTROY IT NOW" made me laugh every time. I knew this miniseries was destined to be schlock.
@Sherri T[A]P Me!! To Have [S]EX With Me I remember really liking The Relic. There was a teaser I once saw for it that didn't show any footage from the film, just the museum itself. It was creepy as hell. I've tried finding it on RU-vid but so far no luck.
OMG YES!!! i remember the Creature and Beast series and always wanted to watch it again but never knew the names of the series. Thank you Chris, now i know.
Me and my entire class was absolutely obsessed with this movie. Boys, girls all of us at 12. I definitely recorded it during a replay. I need to re-watch it.
I loved (and still do) the IT mini series, they remade that. Fingers crossed for Creature. I also loved The Beast!!! I ALWAYS look forward to your Halloween specials. Its added to my "October 31 days of Horror" tradition.
What I liked in White Shark was that Benchley wrote from the Creature's POV, and that he was still a psychotic Nazi hellbent on proving his superiority, even when going back and forth between environments. Weird book, weird mini-series, but all so much fun.
I remember this!! I loved it. Freaked me out as a kid. I can remember it being advertised on tv for weeks prior to it being screened. Same with "The Beast."
The remake wouldn’t have a Stan Winston practical monster though sadly. It would probably rely heavily on cg… BUT, if mike flanagan somehow wound up attached to the piece I would be excited. He did a fantastic job with the “creature” in midnight mass.
Well, it wouldn't have a *Stan Winston* monster obviously, since he passed away. But I disagree it would be CG - practical fx are a huge marketing draw right now.
@@z-beeblebrox If it were a big budget blockbuster maybe, but this has B-Movie written all over it. And we all know that B-movie horror gets a miniscule budget.
@@DonMachado I love the irony of B-movies now being associated with CG and big budget movies being associated with practical fx, when for the past 30 years it was the other way around
Thank you Chris. I had forgotten that this movie even existed. I remember when it came out on TV I was really excited and had to bargain with the rest of the family so I could watch it.
Hey man, I love what you’ve been doing with your channel lately, thanks for talking about these more obscure films in a different light. I finally got around to watching Angel’s Egg btw, beautiful film!
Man, I forgot about this movie. I loved it as a kid the monster freaked me out, such a good monster design. You're absolutely right, gems like this should be remade or readapted. Just really give some of these great creatures and concepts a quality revamp.
Chris you found it! I never could remember the name of this movie and, now, here is this gift! I remember watching this movie as a kid and The Creature both inspired respect and TERROR in pre-teen me the same way JP's velociraptors did; it's a smart predator that can and will outwit us. I agree with your idea for remaking so-and-so movies that had promise, it seems less likely to have as severe backlash as badly made remakes for the bigger blockbusters of yesteryear. Fingers crossed Hollywood hears you.
Duuude. I watched this one time on cable as a kid but never knew the title and NEVER saw it again. It was thing elusive movie that captured my imagination since I was obsessed with Sharks. I was scared but fascinated at the same time. Thank you for making this, I finally know what was that creepy movie I saw that one night!
