Peter Bogdanovich speaks with moderator Ben Mankiewicz before the screening of his brilliant classic film 'The Last Picture Show' during the TCM Film Festival screening at the TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto on March 31, 2012. In this clip, he discusses how is was able to cast Ben Johnson in his Academy Award winning role.

HOW MANY other actors would have the integrity to question a line in the movie because he would think his mother would see the movie and be offended?

Ben was perfect. The real deal, including champion rodeo star, he played himself. In the LPS, the Billy's bloody nose scene shows Ben as he was, totally decent human being.

Ben was the perfect casting, no acting was required, because Ben was Sam. That is why Ben's performance was so authentic and sincere. Ava Gardner as Maxine in "Night of the Iguana" is another one of many examples in cinematic history of the actor and the character being one and the same. The greatest actors can make almost any character believable, but great casting can make great acting unnecessary. As Ben Johnson once said "there isn't an actor that can't act circles around me, but no one can do Ben Johnson better than me".

A gorgeous film. I have the dvd, and, as a special treat for myself, l pop it in, and am transported. And , did I mention, the beautiful Hank Williams soundtrack. What more does a person need.

What I think is pretty impressive on Peter’s part is him having the confidence to contact and give the script to admiral ford in order to convince Ben Johnson, his opinion back then carried a whole lot.

Typically, Oscar loves a ham, but this is one of those rare times when someone underplayed his way to one.

Very true, similar to Melvyn Douglas in Hud as Homer Bannon. Totally underplayed that role to a Supporting Oscar win

You twisted the story according to Ben Johnson's account of how he got the part. You said Ben did not want to do it because he said "there are too many words" in it. You failed to mention what he actually said is " there are too many dirty words in it". Ben said many times when interviewed that there was too much profanity in his lines and he would be ashamed for his mother to see the movie. Ben agreed to do the part when you gave him permission to take out all the "dirty" words. You said Ben finally said " OK, I'll do the god damned thing". Ben would never have said that according to everyone who knew him. He lived by the code of honesty, correctness and respect for woman.

Thank you Anthony Dennis for standing up for Ben Johnson!!!! Peter Bogdanovich's version of the story is very twisted. I do not know why he is attempting to demean Ben Johnson in such a way. What I do know is Ben's character. He would never talk or behave as Bogdonovich describes!!!! Ben Johnson is a man of integrity!!!! He agreed to do the film only if he was allowed to edit his part and remove all of the dirty words. But don't just take my word for it. You can hear Ben tell his story if you will search for the following video title here on RU-vid: A Conversation With Ben Johnson and Harry Carey, Jr. The interview is a delightful listen and will make you laugh, but if you not want to watch the complete interview, skip forward to 05:11. Within about 2 minutes you will have heard Ben's account of why he did not want to do "The Last Picture Show," what was required for him to change his mind and all the details. It is a much different story than the one told by Bogdanovich. I believe Ben. I think you will, too.

Ben Johnson was the real deal. The genuine article, a rarity among actors. Who would have thought Ben Johnson would have to play a part in a bullshit garbage soap opera waste of film like the last picture show to win an oscar.

In a lot of ways The Last Picture Show, is a highly relatable, Modern Day Classic. Ben Johnson's character, is the kind of person, that hopefully, everyone has as a friend, during the course of their lives.
