My dad was a good mate with Brocky, we used to go stay on his farm with him, absolutely awesome bloke. I had the pleasure of spending a few days in his pit box when he was running the Torana, it was impressive to a young fella at the time. Brocky had a torana as his daily, that thing was an absolute rocket!
Mixed classes back then. The in car cam was in a yellow Toyota Celica, a little rocket. Great to see someone reacting to Bathurst and what a great track it is, I think we just took it for granted
Great to see you cover the King of The Mountain, he was without a doubt the only man who could take on Mt Panorama blindfolded and still win, he knew every inch of it so well, that he would chat to the commentary team one arm on the window sill wave to he friends who live on the circuit. He loved to push it on the last lap to show his car was still as good as the start. Check out Peter Brock in the wet Bathurst he went out on slick while the rest were on wet tyres..and slipped and power slided all over the mountain, what a man RIP Peter and Ty mate Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘💖💖💖💖
I love how much fun you are having with your channel! You said from the beginning that was your goal and for everyone to enjoy the ride or just move on along! You had your "outlaw" look going on with the hat and sunglasses, but when you removed the sunglasses it was priceless!!! I'm not a big fan of motor sports but I'm enjoying the ride! Love from Texas 🤠
I remember watching this full race when I was a kid with my old man. He had a yellow SLR/500 and a one iff metallic green A9X 4 door purchased new together and the old man had made us watch every touring car race so ge could ramble continuously about you watch, nothing will catch him, or him or him ir him. They're driving an A9X like mine. He made me believe they cut the roof and welded the back doors to make them 2 door because when they have 4 doors like mine they're too fast. They had to give Moffat and his mates a chance to race against the Toranas. That sexy 2 door has been my favourite car ever since and the only car I might consider swapping my dingo and cattle dog for. Not really.
This was pretty dang cool. Growing up in Colorado, the closest I had to seeing something this cool was, Bandimere Speedway. Had some fun summers there, growing up.
Shit didn't know about that. I owned one of his family's Subaru's and only sold it not long ago after I was side swiped and got a payout from insurance as a not at fault right off to get my ute. Got a message out of the blue reading this is her now. A photo of how I sold it in the Subaru red then a photo of it fully rebuilt and resprayed Subaru gloss white. Spent a bit of money to get it there but mate it looks unbelievable.
Okay, it's good they restored it. I'm a previous Subie owner, EA81 wagon, like the Brumby. Drove a Brumby for while too. Don't underestimate those cars, very capable and good to have on the farm, just as a paddock bomb. Allan and the family only broke the news recently. I had a high school friend succumb to dementia in his early 30s. Pretty shocking to find out he was in a nursing home. Awareness and research is the key, I think the Moffatt family would agree with that. I did hear some promising news recently for treatment.
@@arconeagain I really hope they do have success, it's a bloody terrible thing not only for the victim but the family having to see them deteriorate. This Subaru is an Impreza WX, a factory tamed wannabe WRX with all the oversized spoilers and flares minus the bonnet air intake. Absolutely beautiful car to drive too. Hoping for the best outcome for the Moffat family and every other family going through similar. I'm the same, the ute I bought is a ute that's practical and I can actually use it as a work ute that is actually built to be a work ute, a Holden Rodeo duel cab tray top that I'm not afraid to put a few scratches on. Thank for the info.
@@zalired8925 nothing wrong with those Rodeos. My brother just bought a 2 litre WRX STI from Japan. It's a little hobby car/investment, he's not made of money. By all reports, it's quick. Thanks for your replies.
Oh loved your reactions lol. Your commentary makes it even more entertaining lol. Remember all these greats, Brock, Moffett, Johnson etc...big personalities and brilliant drivers. I hope you ge to drive on this circuit one day, but make sure you use an dash cam for us fans lol
@@OccasionalOutlawSANDOWN 1976 HANG TEN 400 Highlights ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--LfzP7TCEpI.html Hi Jeff, this event was held a few weeks before the Bathurst race, so it is used as a "tune up". This racetrack "Sandown" is 5-10 minutes away from my house. I was only 1 year old when this race was run. Great era for cars.
It could be argued that this yearly race contributed so much to DEVELOPMENT of Australian Cars. Engines, Brakes, Suspensions and Body Stiffness were all improved over many years.
The 308 Australian made V8 in the Toranas made the 351 Cleveland in the Falcon coupes look slow. Although by this stage the Cleveland motors tooling was sent to Australia where the Ford Geelong motor plant made both 351 and 302 Cleveland motors fior the small proportion of people that would take up the V8 option in their Australian Ford cars. Always less than the 30% V8 peak year of 1972.
The thing is Outlaw it can be raining on the mountain and sunny on pit straight as you are looking at it. And I was only a spectactor. Brock, Moffatt, Bond, Perkins, Murphy, Lowndes - many great names currently and previously.
This era was the pinnacle of Australian car industry. GM, Ford and Chrysler weren’t just building cars They were engineering and designing independent models as well. Only a couple of years later, Chrysler quit Australia and sold their factory to Mitsubishi and GM introduced the Commodore which was the same as an Opel sold in Europe, although Holden kept the 308 for it in Australia.
Always great to see Conrod without The Chase . A mate bought a white A9X new ( $16,000 ) and he lent it to this guy who promptly drove it through a brick wall , my mate was pretty pissed off .
G'day mate, to get that race that Brocky didn't just dominate, the 1977 race is the one. It's actually the reason Holden developed the all conquering A9X torana .
One thing of note, I believe the LH Torana was the first car in the world designed to be fitted with 4cyl, 6cyl, and 8cyl engines. The LX's too of course.
A good story that I used to believe, but the 1964 Chevy II and Nova had options of a 153 Cui 4 base model, 230 Cui six and 283 Cui V8. Later the 327 was optional and bigger V8 engines later. All documented on Wikipedia.
@@bondradman7353 a big trend in the US in the early sixties were compact cars to meet some of the small car success of VW and the Rambler American and Studebaker Lark. We got the Falcon out of this but there were a few others. The Oldsmobile F85 and Pontiac Tempest. All bigger than a Holden but considered compacts in the US. The Pontiac Tempest is worth looking up with 99% having the four cylinder option but a four being half a V8 and 195 cui . Took years for Holden to go to a 202 six but that big selling Pontiac four was nearly as big. Don't think any other four was so big. Lots of vibrations though
its not bathurst (brock dominated there until late in his carrer)... but...his codriver in this race, Jim Richards gave Brocky a run for his money a few years later.. Jim in a BMW M3, Brock in a Commodore..."v8 commodore v BMW M3 1987" crap quality..but awesome racing!
In Car Camera was revealed a few years before this race. US Host you hear at the driver change Brock/Richards, is Chris Economackie (?) and he reported back to US Networks about the In Car Camera vision.
Should be remembered that Moffat was Australian racing’s first professional racer...... he had no business or other job to support himself and his wife. Moffat lived off his prize money won..... assuming he didn’t use all of it on his under financed cars. At his peak, Moffat and his wife lived in a caravan parked in an Ampol petrol station in Ringwood , Melbourne. The only car he owned was his famous Mustang, that was not road registered. Howard Marsden as boss of the Ford Racing Team lent Moffat the company Phase 3 Ford gave him...... Marsden preferred his own car and Moffat needed a car to drive. lol Also...... Ford was skint with the money. They believed the car was enough and the team should win regardless of development etc..... that is why Harry Firth left Ford and went to the highly paid job with HDT......a fake dealer team that was fully funded by GMH but without the knowledge of GM in the USA. As for this particular race........the LH and LX Toranas were purpose built race cars designed from the ground up to win Bathurst...... but not safe on the roads with a 5 litre V8 . Holden stuffed up with the LH model so vastly improved the A9X versions of the LX, but left the other models as bad as the LH. The cars were built for the starfire engine to save weight and should never have been allowed on the roads with a V8. The A9X got totally different steering, suspension and rear disc brakes. The road going A9X vehicles also got a special Rochester carby, with only 300 ever made. A special carby for Bathurst and racing, but in the road cars it was given the wrong needles and jets to starve the engine of fuel. Also given only 1 1/2 “ exhaust pipes to choke the performance even further. Owners learnt that by replacing the “ factory” needles and jets and adding 2 1/2 “ dual exhaust..... they gained about 120 hp...... yeah, that much. The Fords were still hoted up family sized road cars with no real GT model as a starting point...... Chrysler were not even there..... no interest in hiring real experts to build a race car for Australia. Ironically....... the Valiant Chargers should have dominated Bathurst but Chrysler’s race team brass were STUPID. They refused 4 wheel disc brakes, designed a then modern suspension but set it up the same as a 1966 Mustang with the inside tyre flapping wildly in the air at every corner , when it should have been glued to the road. lol
Back in that era, safety was not like today. For many (early) years, FLAT BED TRUCKS would pick up the broken down cars and return to the pits..think MOBILE CHICANE..

@@OccasionalOutlaw You are welcome. Sandown 1978 was not as competitive, but still good to watch. I saw some recent Supercars. Looks like it is now Mustangs vs Camaros. The Camaros look really nice. The Mustangs still look cool, but those Camaros are sleek. My profile picture is movie Optimus Prime from Transformers. His friend Bumblebee is a Camaro. GM and Hasbro used the Camaro prototype for Bumblebee in the first live action Transformers movie even before GM started selling the new Camaro model. These new 2023 ones look sleeker than Bumblebee,
