Glad you did. It is one of the top music videos of that time and even now I think.I sometimes have a hard time watching because of the eyes blinking. Another iconic video is Ah Ha "Take on Me". It is a song you have probably already heard.
Sooo glad you watched the video, it just shows Gabriel's talents went beyond making music. Great visual artist, which you can see in his stage performance.
Dude, you have to do the video with this song. Maybe you did already but I missed it. This song NEEDS the video... it was iconic back in the day. There are some songs that have to be reacted to with the video.
Peter Gabriel was the original singer of Genesis. When he left, drummer Phil Collins took over as the singer, and both Gabriel and Collins had solid solo careers. Gabriel was known for doing some really weird shit on stage.
Yes! This one is great. I generally prefer the "radio" version of most songs but this live version is awesome. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-evN6DIGPIJM.html
Oh ! No !.........You should have been directed to the video version. You, literally, can not blink watching it as you will miss something. Peter was in and out of a glass sheet cover for 16 straight hours to achieve the effects in the video..
I’m really glad that you liked this song. I was worried that watching this live version wouldn’t have the same impact as the original. It’s a testimony to the strength of the song writing that it holds up no matter how you experience it.
I was born in 1958. And you're right. I feel like I grew up in the greatest era of music there's ever been. For me that's mid 60's to the mid 90's with the 70's being the absolute pinnacle. I feel privileged to have lived and been the right age for that time!
Just chiming to repeat what many others have said, the official music video for this song is an absolute must see. A must see as in one of the best of all time.
Really good musicians hire really good musicians. Tony Levin. Brilliant bass player. He's played with King Crimson, Gabriel, Bowie, Floyd, Lennon, Waits, Zevon, Rundgren, Ferry, even Stevie Nicks. Him and Gabriel also like working with more iconoclastic people like Laurie Anderson. For a while, it felt like every great session bass player on every great album was either Will Lee or Levin. If you like really talented musicians, you'd likely like something live by Triumph. The entire band can sing, and the entire band can really play. It's a joy to watch players pouring out all of that practicing to us so that we can share the love.
You watched while I was writing my post LOL. It was pure innovation back in the day. Hours of stop motion animation and Peter Gabriel laying under a sheet of glass for 16 hours while they shot it one frame at a time. It’s also MTV’s most played video of all time.
The video would have blown your mind. Also check out ex-Genesis frontman Peter Gabriel, coz thats who he is,Big Time and Steam for extra groove. You'll love them both, then you can check out others from him like Digging in the Dirt. Grew up with all this, but i was greedy, aged 30 in 1984,i lived it all and wouldn't swap my time on this planet for any other period in history. The blessed boomer generation indeed, and i am thankful in the extreme.
I have never seen this live - only the official video and reactions to the official video. I'm glad you watched the video, but I thank you for showing me this version which I am downloading onto my phone right now! The band was awesome too.
Replying to myself, there's a live version from 2014 in London - same band, same guitarist with the moustache, same moves, great audience participation. Just a little, um, larger and creakier but then, aren't we all? [Search for Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer Live (Back to Front Tour - London)]
I absolutely LOVE Peter Gabriel. He is SO artistic! His material goes from fun to mellow and deep. In Your Eyes has deep content, as well as Don’t Give Up and I Love To Be Loved. Then there is Big Time and Steam that match the fun of Sledgehammer, and also have videos that are just as creative.
That bass player - Tony Levin - is one of the best bass players out there (I never say "the" best :-) ). He has done session work with hundreds of top artists, pop, country, jazz ... He has been a member of King Crimson since the early 80s, has done numerous solo albums, and leads "Tony Levin's Stick Men". In essence, there ain't nothin he can't play!
Peter Gabriel from the Prog 60's Rock group Genesis goes solo in the 80's.....singing about sex using poetic lyrics conveying to the audience what they need. Unfortunately I did not see him in concert...but he is my highly favorite. Glad you enjoy him!
I'm already subscribed... but I wanted to tell you, I just played this song for my young kids... it's one of my favorites.. shit they danced all over the room. Good music is good music.. I loved your reaction. Love you dude.
"Solsbury Hill," "Big Time," "In Your Eyes," "Red Rain," and "Come Talk to Me" are all EXCELLENT. "Kiss That Frog" is good silliness. "Biko" is a history lesson about South Africa.
Oh...getting into some eighties greatness: Peter Gabriel, Don Henley, Steve Winwood, Phil Collins, Robert Plant.....all from great bands who went on to great solo careers. Peter Gabriel...vocalist of Genesis; Phil Collins, drummer and vocalist of Genesis: Don Henley drummer and singer of The Eagles; Robert Plant from Zep of course.....and that’s just the solo giants.....
Brilliant. The vid for this track actually changed what was meant by a music vid. before that they were known as Promotional films. it was the advent of MTV and kicked off how we view and listen to music. Check out 'In your eyes' from the Secret World live tour.
here's an off the wall one for ya: Johnny Clegg, Scatterlings. Pretty much kickstarted the world music thing that turned Gabriel around & gave rise to Paul Simon's Graceland
I was obsessed with PG in the 80s, I still love him. I saw this tour several times. So amazing live. He was the original singer for Genesis before Phil Collins (drummer for Genesis) took over. Next you should watch “Games Without Frontiers” and “ In Your Eyes” from the same tour. Any song from it is great.
Oh my!! Peter knows how to play to a crowd of fans!! And the fans reward him with respect. Check out the song "In Your Eyes" live. Watch the fans at the beginning, flicking their lighters to the beat. Then check out the double neck Violin. All the band is really into this song and they are giving it all back to the crowd. great live performance. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-evN6DIGPIJM.html
Adrian Belew. In any band, but especially Talking Heads. Or . . King Crimson along with Tony Levin--the bassist here (& if Lee Sklar didn't play it in pop music, Levin probably did)
I love this but it's the rare occasion where the original video is awesome. It is legendary in its own right. Although frankly the music was better here. Still, you gotta see it.
I was born exactly in 1960 and I do like this song but Peter Gabriel has so many songs that I deem superior to this. It would take a lot of space to name them all, but you are in for a ride. I see this reaction is one year old, so I guess you have more Peter Gabriel experience by now. Thank your maker that you are blessed with his music 🎶
Probably one of my favorite songs. But man I forgot how weird Peter Gabriel is. He's a legend but just a strange dude lol Harry styles actually does a cover of this song and it's fucking incredible. I might even like it better than the original ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Tqm7-zN5s8k.html
While I absolutely LOVE this tune, I sure WISH they would have slowed the BPM ( Tempo ) DOWN to what the original recording IS... I've been in many bands myself and I've found that for either one reason or another, the DRUMMER ( who's job is to CONTROL the tempo ) or the SINGER counts off the song TOO FAST , and now you've got yourself a speed show that can't be slowed down for NOTHING... I believe when someone other than the drummer is TOO EXCITED or nervous ( or "something" to do with being in the moment ) it can sink the whole performance. I've always given the count off responsibility to the drummer... If they're too nervous or excited, you're SUNK. That "1-2-3" is ultra important ✅
I always hated this song because the video had nothing to do with the lyrics. I've never seen this live version. Now it all makes sense. This never could have been shown on MTV back in the day. Too risqué! But now I appreciate the actual music behind it.
