Peter Hitchens Interview

In 2018 Mark Tooley wrote a column about the “perpetually grouchy British conservative commentator Peter Hitchens” and his “sour First Things review,” in which he panned, “two widely admired inspirational films that celebrate British WWII heroism, Darkest Hour and Dunkirk.”
More recently, Jason Vickers chided Hitchens for another First Things column, this time on Britain’s response to coronavirus, which Hitchens thought confirmed Britain’s demise.
Hitchens contacted Tooley to say Providence's portrayal of his views had been unfair. In this interview, he explains his perspective on points we at Providence critiqued. He also reflects on this current moment of protest and iconoclasm in the West, observing that he has transitioned from young Trotskyist to conservative Anglican, while many cultural elites are still stuck in 1968.
If Hitchens is grouchy, he is enjoyably so!

The footage of the crowd in London defacing Churchill's statue, whilst the police stood by, was only surpassed for me by the footage of one man, who calmly strode up to the statue and ripped down their banners and posters, and walked away.....but most telling was the police's instant reaction in chasing after him to arrest him..... Not the protesters, not the rioters & vandals......the man removing their infantile handiwork......bravo UK police, great moral compass there.

@Julia A, the police have undergone the cultural revolution too, it's been a gradual process for decades now. Peter Hitchens has highlighted it for ages. In his book, 'The Abolition of Liberty', he cites one particular instance where two police officers took opposing sides over a man with a placard stating an unfashionable viewpoint - but breaking no laws - who was being physically attacked and assaulted by some of the general public, which is a crime. The point is, the police are supposed to follow, enforce, and uphold the law, not their own - or anyone else's - political ideals or opinions. The fact that one police officer took the side of the attackers was a prime example of how they've been politicised and corrupted, as well as the courts. The police are subjected to brainwashing 'diversity' training amongst other things. I believe the man with the placard faced trial, but I'm not so sure about the fate of his attackers.

@banjo cat, you mean the same brother who supported the Iraq war, never renounced his support for the Soviet Union, had all pomp and pretence, verbiage, but zero wisdom and insight? Yeah, Christopher Hitchens was a real top bloke, championing fashionable atheism, wars based on lies, evil Empires, but you're right, he showed strength by attacking and denouncing Mother Teresa. Whereas as Peter Hitchens rightly opposed the Iraq War, Afghanistan, and the Soviet Union, renouncing his Trotskyism which sought to bring down decent people by a misanthropic, hateful ideology.

The revolutionaries of the 60s didn't have mobile phones to co-ordinate their activities and were, in my humble opinion, a little more cerebral. A great deal of the current activity is simply emotional, poorly thought out, attention seeking with very little historical understanding or context.
@Gettingitreal

I agree. I’d add that those in the 60’s grew up with actual values to rebel against. These younger generations never had the values and rather have slogans and ideas from years of flaky education and parenting

I get the feeling and it's a feeling I've had many times in conversations with my American friends (whom I love dearly) that he doesn't understand a word Peter Hitchens said.
@DieFlabbergast
@DieFlabbergast 4 года назад
Correction: he didn't understand EVERY word Peter said (I'm British, and neither did I), but I'm fairly sure he got the gist. A good deal of the British cultural baggage would have no doubt gone in one ear and out the other, but Peter's central message is usually communicated quite effectively.

Shit, I feel like every other interview of Peter is the victim of the infamous RU-vid algorithm to keep it buried away. He’s so unbelievably reasonable in almost arguments he makes and thoughts that he has that it is difficult for a society so bent on being overly aggressive to see that reason is often enough to help the world and all those who live within it. Oof, I also just managed to catch your video from yesterday based on my search for p h videos and wow.

Absolutely agree , The Cruel Sea , one of the best war time movies ever made . Probably read the book first as it’s much more detailed and somehow adds more suspense and drama to the captains dilemmas . Don’t be fooled by the black and white movie as old school , of course doesn’t have the CGI etc but the story is immense .

I only have to pick him up on two points - 1) The US and UK *people* (and not government) [do] share a special relationship. We [are] family. We [also] have our own interests. 2) The second world war had to be fought. I am aware of how the first led to the second, but it would be unconscionable to believe the UK could accept a Nazi superstate on the doorstep and not see a threat. Should we have just sat and had tea and smell the flowers? Of course not.
@mikereger1186

Well, sometimes the Yanks are referred to as the Cousins, which is probably about right. The most compelling thing to remember is that what killed the British Empire was debt. We needed the guns, food and ammo, we bought it from the states and when our wealth was gone we went into debt. The sad fact is that postwar debt drove the early relationship. Arguably we HAD to fight Hitler. But, putting the tinfoil hat on, what would have happened if we Britain had made peace instead? Been richer, would the Empire have lasted longer and continued its slow, ordered dismantling with better outcomes? Would Hitler have broken his word yet again and finished us off? What effect would it have had on Japanese aggression, to Singapore or Hong Kong? And without the massive transfer of wealth, would the USA still have ended up as a superpower?

The British People who elected Boris Johnson last December 2019, need to start to question whether we might have elected a 'leftie' Trojan Horse into the highest political Office in the land. Marxists are very wiley, and very determined: which is what makes them kindred spirits to Islam. Johnson's entire Exmoor family is anti-BREXIT, and has less of a 'British' pedigree than our own 'royal' family. Johnson only went with BREXIT when he saw there were votes in it: but since he achieved POWER, he - and his Cabinet - have done nothing with it: and now we need to ask why?
