They want the standards to drop, so the uninvited migrants don't feel intimidated. Also box ticking so the "Non indigenous" are not discriminated against, as usual. We have been dropping standards in medical exams so they don't get called racist when shed loads of non indigenous fail the exams. Our country is being run by White indigenous hating shit bags!

The concept of 70% of pupils qualifying for University is bewildering. I scraped admission to a Polytechnic in 1982, when only 15% of students made it to that level and above. I thought the average pupil was thick.
@@fletcherhamilton3177 What I remember of it,. it was a place for doing more practical courses, more suited for the workplace. The entry level requirements were also not as high as for a university. Some time ago, all of the British polytechnics became universities.
The entry requirements for Cambridge or Oxford are higher than they've ever been, you don't get to study Mathematics at those universities if you don't have straight As and even then you will be asked to take an interview. Hitchens argument stinks of snobbery because it isn't based on anything factual. The number of people going to university is reflective of where the opportunities are. The big salaries are in stem fields and those people screwed over by the deindustrialization of their communities are right to want a piece of that pie. Too hell with elitism.

My daughter, who had very good grades from school., went into advanced education as an ordinary young girl .When she came out of university she had been politized by extreme leftism !

Could not agree more. University education is a badge of shame. 90 percent of the kids who go to university are thick as two short planks, and yet think they are clever.
Our education system is shot to pieces. After a 5 year stint as a teacher in the early 70s I pursued another career until I retired, at which point I decided to do some private French tuition. I had a number of bright A level students and decided to show them an O level paper from the 1960s, they were horrified by how difficult they found it and none would have passed it, yet they all went on to achieve grade As in their A levels. As Peter said, it’s not that youngsters are less intelligent than they used to be, but they have been conned by a system that celebrates mediocrity.
It should be 7% going, with no tuition fee, based entirely on merit (exam results), for the benefit of the country. Everybody going to university is the same as nobody going to university. A-levels were very difficult in my day, to the extent that the mathematics required for a proper Engineering degree were manageable. The grant system should be re-established. Student loans abolished.
Germany has been very successful (until very recently, when it has allowed the US to dictate its government policies) But previous to this it’s success was its work force, who were skilled and hard working, Germany has a policy of no more than 20% Uni students, the rest are apprenticeships.
I have a MA in housework and domestic chores. I'm very proud of it too by the way. I am now going to take a Ph.d in the theory and science of cleaning windows. I subject that has been neglected for too long. So there!

Peter is right but he's not the only person who has said this. Nigel has been saying this for years but as soon as Peter knows this he will probably change his mind (doesn't like Nigel), being the contrarian that he is (he hates being called this), if it's a popular opinion he will soon find a reason to go against it. We have unfortunately allowed too many people to go to university to the detriment of skills and trades. The same people who are pro sending just about anyone to university will be the same people who moan the loudest about needing foreign workers to come and do the trades. In the end the people who do go to university, not all but a large amount end up working in something that they did not study for or at the very least end up serving coffee.
About 8 years ago my niece who was in year 7 at the time was looking at my French school books from 1971 (yes I kept them). I wanted to help her study as I still speak French, I realised that was not going to be possible due to the childish content set aside for homework (this is 5 months into the year) - of drawing European flags, searching the internet for the best cafe's etc. At first she thought she was looking at year 12 material - I pointed out this was year 7, to which she replied, "they are dumbing us down."

I know absolutely loads of people who have gone to university and are now doing basic jobs,shelve filling,driving,picking and packing etc all have said it was a complete waist of time we should go back to what it was like 40 years ago only a genius went to university and was then guaranteed a top job,lecturer,doctor,surgeon,engineer,teacher,today even with a good degree in "business studies" your heading for the scrapheap thanks to our wonderful politicians 😀
I have never attended university but the impression i get is that students mostly never go through with their vocational aspirations and end up in a career which never warranted a university degree in the first place...they get into huge debt and then take any job going to pay it off...seems absurd in my opinion.

The point is if you educate the top 5 or 10% you have a university. Educate the top 50% and you have to reduce the standard to GCE O level of 50 years ago or most would fail.

There is no act more cretinous than studying for an arts degree. Most of the purely abstract subjects we take at school are profoundly useless later in life and only serve to demonstrate to employers that you are capable of a certain level of learning. Most people with trades at their finger tips are employed for life, Mc graduates less so
70% of population doesn’t attend university, not necessary for the jobs they hold, there they learn skills and crafts, unlike in school where talking is supreme over providing a good or service.
So cringe seeing all the students every year holding up their top mickey mouse marks in GCSEs, A levels pretending they are smart lol and you only need a 50% correct answers rate in maths to pass A level maths and universities accept it.

I was very disappointed that President Trump did not pardon Assange. After President Trump's voice was silenced on social media and MSM you'd think he would have been a champion of free speech for everyone even when you don't like what the person is saying. It was a failure on his part IMHO.
The problem is the middle-classes have come to treat universities as little more than job-training centers. Traditionally, the primary purpose of universities was to expand knowledge and understanding to a very sophisticated and rigorous standard - it was then up to a graduate to apply his or her knowledge to their chosen occupation or vocation. Today's graduates are "trained" or even indoctrinated rather than educated - often spoon-fed meaningless postmodern theory that adds nothing of substance to cultural and functional aspects of an advancing civilization. Unfortunately, we don't live in a high-minded or intellectually curious society that recognizes true greatness or genius, so we will continue to promote mediocrity and banality as our society degenerates into a hellscape of decadent social failure.
I came to the opinion many years ago,rightly or wrongly, that the reason for putting people into Uni, on what appreared to be non sensical courses, was, because of the collapse of industry,ie ship yards , steel making and others, was to keep the dole figures down. Apprenticeships, in these industries, is where a lot of youngsters should have gone not to Uni, but these industries disappeared.

It all went wrong when Labour did away with technically based schools, grammar schools and Technical Colleges. They tried to level up those who were not academic whilst levelling down those who used to go to grammar schools!

(I didn’t say ‘truth’) Education providers have been changing the way the teach, sometimes for the better, with ‘student’ led ‘inquiry’ based curricular etc. The International Baccalaureate schooling system, use this statement “The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world. and research and show independence in learning.” Most others use similar ideas. Read into it what you will.

As a person In university, I completely agree. the majority of students are idiots. Classes are just an extension of high school and require basic effort to obtain an A.
It's a rare thing for me to disagree with Peter Hitchens, but on this occasion I must. I firmly believe that everyone who wants to should have the opportunity to explore the rich world of higher education, and to flourish as a result. Everyone that is legally entitled to be in this country, that is. Of course there are some people who cannot because of learning difficulties, though they should receive the maximum support. The real problem with our education system is the intellectual garbage that is currently being peddled at every level of our society. I see glints of elitism here, as I have with some of his other views, on matters like referenda and electoral reform. And it's a disappointment for me to have to conclude, that here we have yet another member of the Oxbridge mafia, who has nothing but disdain and contempt for ordinary Britons, though he claims to have learned from them. There's nothing special about Oxford and Cambridge, in fact they are key exponents of the Wokist lunacy that abounds in this country. And they churn out a lot of the people who are now spreading it across the land.

They won't flourish if they're not up to it. You haven't been listening to Hitchens on education - he agrees that Oxford and Cambridge are bad due to the collapse of the grammar schools that kept the whole system honest.
Isn't this criticism of school and colleges standards thing, the stock Tory criticism directed at those bettering themselves and rising from below - "The how did you get in and how can I help you out" . . the parochial local Tennis/Golf club mentality. As a kid, I remember this being said in the '60's. The educational system of the past probably did have higher standards because it had been in place for centuries and was designed to be ruthlessly exclusive, by mainly financial means. Now it has been opened-up, much to the elite's dismay although "Excess Profiteering" academic fees may have retarded this process. Won't the standards thing will work through . . . take industry and commerce . . . . a new system, in which capacity is substantially expanded, never produces anything near its intended output or quality until its "Bedded-in" ? And the social effect time-scale we're looking at here is probably 30-60 years. Hasn't the last 40 years seen vast improvements in the material wealth and standards of living in this country ? Or did the fairies do this ? Hasn't the skill base of the working population expanded dramatically in extent and depth compared with 60 years ago ? Hasn't the legislative framework that governs all our activity been expanded, honed and refined to a state that couldn't be imagined 60 years ago ? Who has done that then, the fairies ? All I can see over the last 60 years of being in this country is generally improving standards for the mass of the people. Somebody, even if they are not of "Elite" Standard education, must be doing something right on a balance of probabilities. But again, that may not be in accord with what the old elite require (Touch of the Putin's there, the glory of past empires ?). 60 years ago there were residents of some cottages in the Welsh valleys that didn't Have a telephone in the house . . . now some of their heirs and successors are blocking the M4 whilst persuing the visceral need to attend an Ed Sheraan concert. Even if the schools and colleges are falling short (Weren't they ever, particularly State Schools), come the ages 16 to 22, behaviours will have to bridge the cultural gap between what the World-of-work requires and what the schools provide - a bit like shore based naval trainees embarking on their first sea posting - always a bit of a shock. 1 we need to reopen polytechnic universities and purely medical universities that only offer courses within that sphere and maybe some basic English and mathematic ones ... This is incorrect. Education should exist for any and everyone who wants to avail themselves of it to the degree they desire. If you want to filter along the way for capability, that is understandable and acceptable. Hitchens' complaint is one of standards, which should not be confused with the democratization of education.

It does not cause mental illness, i don't drink and i haven't smoked cigarettes since 1992 . I however am now in my 70's and have smoked weed since 1969. I am fit and still working !! If you feel nauseous cannabis will get rid of that within 10 minutes. It has many medical properties , Hitchens is pandering views which stop us moving forward along with the rest of the world in finally legalizing a drug we could all benefit from , and its natural !!
