Peter Jackson on The Beatles: Get Back & Technology Invented for the Docuseries

If you’re a fan of The Beatles and have Disney+, you absolutely need to set aside some time to watch Peter Jackson’s The Beatles: Get Back original docuseries later this week when it starts streaming. Originally filmed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg back in January 1969, the footage is an incredible behind-the-scenes look at one of the biggest bands of all time trying to write new songs under a tight deadline. In addition, it’s the very first time The Beatles’ last live performance as a group, the rooftop concert on London’s Savile Row, has been shown in its entirety. As a lifelong fan of the band, I was mesmerized watching John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr’s creative process and the way they interacted with one another in the studio.
If you’re not aware, the band originally allowed Lindsay-Hogg and his documentary crew to record them with the understanding the footage would be used for a TV special. The crew recorded for 21 days and ended up with sixty hours of footage and more than 150 hours of unheard audio. Eventually some of the footage was released as the documentary, Let It Be, back in 1970, but the majority of the footage has been locked away in a vault for over fifty years.
But after Apple’s CEO Jeff Jones and director of production Jonathan Clyde saw Jackson’s pioneering restoration work on the 2018 World War I documentary They Shall Not Grow Old, they reached out asking if he would be interested in doing something similar with The Beatles footage. Cut to a few years later and we have The Beatles: Get Back.
With the three-part series streaming November 25, 26, and 27, a few days ago I spoke to Jackson about making the incredible docuseries. During the interview, he revealed the technology that was invented to demix the originally mono recording so you could hear what the band was saying without any music, how The Beatles deliberately tried to drown out the audio when they were discussing certain subjects, how the film ended up being close to eight hours when they originally were going to make a two something hour feature film, and so much more.
Finally, with Jackson being a huge fan of the band, he told me that every time he saw something in the raw footage that he thought was cool, he made sure to add it in to make sure it didn’t disappear in the vault for another fifty years. Like I said, if you are a fan of The Beatles, you are going to be blown away by what Jackson and his brilliant team has done with this footage and film.
Watch what he had to say in the player above and below is exactly what we talked about.
Peter Jackson
The challenges of using the audio from the ‘60s and how it was originally recorded on a nagra tape recorder in mono.
How they investigated the technology called demixing which allows a mono track to be split up into their individual tracks.
How he had some people in New Zealand develop machine learning which allowed them to really get into the audio channels.
How The Beatles deliberately tried to drown out the audio when they were discussing certain subjects, but with the machine learning the editors could get past that.
Does he have a two hour version of the film for a more casual fan?
How once COVID happened and the release date got pushed he decided to make the movie he wanted to make without talking to Disney or The Beatles which resulted in the current cut of the film which is close to eight hours.
How every time he saw something in the footage that he thought was cool and the fans would love he put it in the movie to make sure it didn’t disappear in the vault for another fifty years.
Does he have a longer version of the documentary than what is being released?
How each day of filming back in 1969 usually resulted in three to four hours of raw video footage and up to eight hours of audio.
How his first cut was eighteen hours long and then they started to edit it down.

@Simon Nielsen i wonder how much of the 56 hours is the same moments from different angles. So 56 hours of footage with 3 cameras could only be roughly 18 hours of real time. But then we have probably 160+ hours of audio when you have 8 hours a day but he had mics in different rooms so ringo and George might be working on octopuses garden in the main room while others are in the break room talking about eating George's biscuits and blaming Yoko.

Comfortable? Not me. The film is exposing The Beatles split as the hoax it was. The Let it Be film was designed to deceive fans: to make people believe that the split was something real and not a theatrical trick to make money. For decades we were deceived by the idea that the recording of the Let it Be album was dark, depressive, divisive. Pathetic that it was Walt Disney showing the world how the four Beatles were in fact enjoying the whole process.

What a great interview! Peter took us "inside baseball" to help us understand the process. It was monumental but like all complex issues, the process starts by breaking it down and then rebuilding it. The result is amazing and outstanding in every respect. What is shown is that, in spite of world wide fame and wealth, we see 4 guys trying to create in an atmosphere of obstacles, to see their decisions and the mistakes they make. Peter Jackson shows the Beatles managing and weaving their way through to come out with a successful project. Some fans may have thought they created simply by sprinkling pixie dust... "Get Back" was more like four carpenters measuring and sawing through saw dust to get it done.

Fantastic interview - love the revelation regarding the audio restoration of the nagra reels which is truly amazing and may lead to some far reaching consequences, eg will Giles Martin now be able to do a new stereo remix of the Please Please Me album ? Also, I wonder if they will release the 18 hour cut of the film on DVD/Blu Ray/4K ? Here's hoping !!

Thank you, Peter Jackson and his team. Since the 1970 Let It Be, I’ve hoped there would be a Beatles quality documentary that honestly reveal them working, creating, talking amongst each other. We’ve got it now. God bless you for this masterpiece! Seeing John, George again, watching Them together, is just too much to describe in words.

Fantastic bit about the audio extraction at the beginning ... he goes and gets some ML guys to make the tools better. Must be nice to have that kind of budget! Nice job Peter! Can't wait to see it.

A big " Here, here! " for Peter's nod to Lindsay-Hogg's contribution! Jackson loves stories. He tells tales with film. As such, he has done a remarkable job in conveying the hills and valleys of this crucial time in the group's journey. In glorious colour, he reveals the drama, joy and creativity of these four men. A remarkable testimonial for us and future fans of the Beatles.

Thank you was absolutely right. It is absolutely tremendous to have this film, restored or actually 'created' as Peter Jackson says. A huge, huge privilege to sit alongside the Beatles. And credit to Paul and Ringo for letting it go ahead.

THANK YOU soooo much for asking about the Audio Restoration. I finished the entire Documentary last night and the whole time I couldn’t stop asking myself how they did they get such incredible sound with a single mic. I’m an Audio Editor and was still scratching my head. Learning they created the Tools made the experience even cooler now so thank you Collider 🤩

I don’t think people give enough credit to the genius work of Peter Jackson in the “Now and Then” music video. The most dignified possible work anyone could have produced as a farewell and legacy to the greatest band ever! So much credit is still due to Peter Jackson for such masterpiece!

One of my favorite scenes is when Ringo and friends are sitting there in the doldrums, the morning after George quit the band, and it's all heavy, and then as if on cue, in comes a florist's delivery man and he says in a tone as if someone just died, 'These are for George Harrison,' and Ringo burst out laughing because the comedic timing of that is just priceless. I loved it, like right then I knew that Ringo was thinking, 'Oh, George will be back, don't worry, we're too close as brothers for this to be the end.' And I thought any of them would've had the same reaction no matter who quit the band, they were that close.

Peter Jackson is a Director who put his mindset as a Beatles fan, & that's why he was so eager to share. This was a true Labor of Love & not something that was just slapped together as another documentary. (Though we would appreciate that as well) ! The added hours of footage could have been for "his eyes & ears only", but that's not how Peter rolls. That's why he took on this project in the first place. He is the ONLY person who made it possible for us remaining Beatles fans to see this footage in our lifetime. (Including Paul & Ringo) Not to mention the full restoration! If not for Peter, for sure it would have sat another half a century in the vault, which newer fans wouldn't "relate & appreciate" as much as us 1st generation fans.
