Peter Mel forced one on the outer bowl at Mavericks, then made the largest, cleanest, deepest barrel ever surfed at Mavericks, tow in or paddle in. Hands down the greatest wave ever surfed at Mavericks.
So Glad Peter bagged the best barrel ever at Mavs. He deserves it. A true pioneer of the big wave culture and doing it on his home big wave break to boot! RAD Peter!
back in the 70s (74 ) to be exact not many ventured out at mavericks.I spent 3 years surfing Oahu and i was no where ready for Mavericks i stood on that cliff in the back ground watching!Young surfers today are way more advanced than we were back then.
Happened to me once back in 2012 surfing Ponce Inlet FL during a 6-7' swell... the locals there were NOT nice at all, one dude paddled in front of me and tried to kick my face to give you an idea. We were all sitting outside the break and some dude nailed the longest fucking floater I've ever seen... had to have been 4-5 seconds flying across the top of the wave. Needless to say every single person was screaming, never seen that much hype before.
@@chriskaten944 It really was. I've been surfing since I was a kid and consider myself to be "pretty good". I can hit floaters, have great balance... etc and I've never seen anything like that even from the pros.

It's ridiculous how many people feel so confident speaking on subjects they clearly know nothing about to people who have firsthand experience in the thing. Everyone nowadays think they can watch a few RU-vid videos and become experts on any given subject.

I can tell from your comments that you obviously haven't surfed Mavericks, and don't understand the risk, skill, judgement involved, let alone a one in a million waves
mavericks is one of the most technical paddle in waves on the planet. just to paddle in and make a drop out there is one thing let alone backdoor the bowl out there and get spit out. i doubt we will see a wave like this ridden out there in a good minute. and 15 on the face? come on now…

I've been surfing there for 21 years. Hands down the best barrel I've ever seen anyone get out there. And you can ask John Raymond Christie or Mark sponsler and they will all agree with a combined 80+ additional years out there
