Goddess among goddesses, the one and only, outstanding human-doing and greatly missed, sweetness that will always be-Mary 💜🌻💜 This world has been blessed by her and I’m sure it’s better off for said blessings 💜🌻✌️
When they first arrived on the scene everyone that even knew what a guitar was formed a trio and sang to anyone that would listen. No one could match them. A singular combination of voices and style. And like everyone is saying, no auto tune, no multiple tracks laid down, just singing. It was a good time to be living.
I'm 31. My parents were children in the 1960s. I grew up listening to Peter, Paul, and Mary, so their music resonates and sweeps me back to the most beautiful, early childhood memories and the radiant connection I have with my loving parents. When I was 18 transitioning into adulthood and learning how I love to sing and write music, I was also going througha hard time; I listened to their music. So as God brought me back into light, I sang to their harmonies. Now their music makes me think of not one but two essential times of my life. I remember trying tk decide whose voice was best out of three and couldn't do it. All to perfect. On top of all this, young Paul looks just a little bit like my father did as a young man. So watching them singing is a little like having my father immortalized as a young man. I freakin love Peter, Paul, and Mary. They are the definition of harmony. And forever they will continue to inspire me as a person and a singer.
They appeared in Albuquerque NM while I was in school there in 1965. Best concert I've ever attended in my life. They exalted us and brought tears to our eyes, and all the fellows were madly in love with Mary. Peter first came onstage, stepped up to the mike & said, "My name is Peter; I'm not an apostle." Then Paul came out & said, "My name is Paul, I'm also not an apostle." Finally Mary came out; she said "My name is Mary," while she looked daggers at Peter & Paul! Unforgettable night, unforgettable music, unforgettable warmth and joy! Alas, a different world then, and a better.
So true! I was very surprised when in about 1980 they came to Minneapolis and sang at a restaurant as I thought they filled concert halls. I didn't plan ahead and can't remember how soon I found out... I think it was after the fact, as usual for me ha! As a kid I my sister and husband got a very nice floor console type of stereo, a Webcor, as a wedding gift when they married in 1961. They liked PPM and I remember The Sand Pipers album. I like the Folk Music era. I like others too like The Mamas and the Papas, Christy Minstrels. I like how PPM has such control and like the song, "Lovin' Me" (don't know the name) how they go from soft and increase their volume then back off. I gues RCA or a major label actually put them together. I guess they didn't form the group themselves.
Been fans when they were two beards and a blonde as well as when they were two balds and a blonde and it broke my heart when the world lost Mary. I still get teary eyed when I hear them sing on the radio.
I am glad that this video is in black and white. It speaks to those times and makes me remember them. Right on, with no distractions, I remember the idealism and gentle passion that was embodied in many of that generation and in this legendary trio. How I wish it had lasted forever.
As Hunter Thompson said, "...We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. . . . So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark-that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.” ― Hunter S. Thompson, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Ah Herman, I am also 75 & PP&M were the big loves of my teens & early 20s in Melbourne. I saw them so many times on their Australian tours in the 60s & 70s, they were a huge part of my growing up. They never let us down, performances were all sublime. I still listen to them with gratitude for all they brought with them. I remember them as a strong commentary of the world which changed so much, and they are still too immediate for me to feel nostalgia. It could all have been yesterday !
I think the 'views' numbers are a bit pathetic! What is so wrong with mankind? There should be millions! These songs, these souls, this culture is just SO important to our survival and mere existence in this eternal universe...to say the least!!! Amen???
The more I thought about your comment, the more it makes sense. I thought my mom loved PPM, but when I shared this, she wasn't that excited. As I moved on to more PPM videos, I realized why my Mom gave up on this group: they became liberal extremists. They were activist musicians. They're AMAZINGLY TALENTED, but their message became more and more militant and "woke". No matter how great the talent, if it lacks underlying integrity and Truth, it won't survive. God is in control, not arrogant activists. I trust God, not the statistics and coercion of leftist extremists.
@@ghrohrs2020 If you think PPM were leftist extremists...God help YOU!!! If you think singing songs promoting peace is leftist extremism ...see a fekn psychiatrist. And ask Jesus for forgiveness.
To me, Peter, Paul and Mary were the refinement of the 60's folk style. Their renditions were dynamic and immersed in emotion. Watching this program makes me miss those days, as turbulent as they were.
Likewise. I first heard Peter, Paul and Mary aged 8 whilst living in Australia in the early 1960s and have some very fond memories of their songs being played at school events.
I'm 72, and assume I first heard them about 10 as well. I saw them three times in concert, and Perter and Paul in a final tribute at Ravinia after Mary passed away. Best folk group of all time.
I saw them while I was in college in 1966(76)now) and still listen to them on records, cassettes, and cds. Love their songs and music. They led a generation to be what we old folks are today.
My brother caught me crying to Puff the Magic Dragon , he laughed, I cried in anger, a story we shared for the rest of our lives. My brother is gone now, but that memory remains.
@@jameseubanks1817 Of course! This song got me through a dozen years of babysitting, as well as raising a daughter. Each and everyone of these children know the song. There is another generation of adults singing to their children. :)
Saw them in concert twice. They had the audience sing along to Puff The Magic Dragon the same as this concert. What a treat to be there. Mary lost her voice temporarily, and they paused the show for a little while until her voice returned, beautiful as ever.
1965 a very special, if not very sad year for family! We lost my father and my mother lost her baby sister. But it was a time of great music from PPM to Dylan and the Beatles. RIP Dad!
Beautifull, heartwarming vocal harmonies. Born in the 1950s in the Netherlands I allways had been drawn to music which sounded different from main-stream popular music I heard on the radio, I dicovered artists like PP&M. It opened-up a whole new world for me and the journey has not ended. I still dicover new music every day.
The music if the 60’s had a message that is timeless. Let’s hope and pray that the seeds of discontent that were planted on those songs will bring to fruition all the peace we cried out for in those songs. We are here again to see if that cry can be answered by this generation - we were the seed planters but the sowing was real and so will the reaping - that the natural law of love and life❤️
As a kid in 1960 to high school grad 1966 and college grad 1970 and navy until 1978, Buddy Holly, Peter, Paul, and Mary, Beach Boys, Beatles, Stones, Dave Clark Five, Who, Guess Who, Grass Roots, Kinks, Zombies, Bob Dillon, Chuck Jackson, Brook Benton, Them, The Uniques, 96 Tears, Ray Charles, Bruce Chanel, Timi Yuro, The Aquatones, Brenda Lee, 4 Seasons, Brian Highland, Roy Orbison, The Supremes, Elvis, Ray Stevens, the Japanese one hit wonder, The Lettermen, Gene Pitney, a jillion motown groups, and many other hit makers in the 60's, we were so lucky for this music, I think we old timers measure our lives to the time frame of this music, I do. Absolutely the finest of life. hub, VF96 US Navy
My wife, Sue & I were married in early 1966 after dating since late 65. Our song was & still is, 'Let's Hang On' by the Four Seasons. A few said it would never last but we're still here & together after more than 57 years.
Mary Travers is one of those very few singers, male or female, whose voice rings like a bell. I can think of only a few others - Judith Durham, Jon Anderson, Geddy Lee come easily to mind. It's a rare quality, and when you hear it you'll never forget it.
Absolutely. From what I've read, Mary never thought she was much of a singer in these early days, and Peter and Paul brought her in for some "sex appeal". How wrong she was. While they all sound perfect, she's the one that stands out.
I found myself singing along with most songs and wishing my fingers still worked like they did 50 years ago and I had a guitar in my hands. O the memories…
Simply superb! Elegant repertoire including classics by Gordon Lightfoot (who they introduced to the world) and Bob Dylan (whose anthems they brought to the masses). Their vocal blend, espressivo dynamics and rhythmic vitality is unique AF.
Quite simply the greatest live performanc ever and I was lucky enought to witness these wonderful people all those years ago. They changed every aspect of my life and the truth of their presence has carried me on to these dreadful days. You can see the young audience trying to understant the life of the songs and perhaps become advocates of truth..... what the hell went wrong?!? My ageing heart is broken now and I feel so lonely as I live out my last days. Bless the three of them for the gifts they gave.
Mr. Collinjohnrudd, You're breaking my heart. I think I'm just a bit younger than you because I don't really remember Peter, Paul and Mary first hand but I remember nostalgicly hearing them throughout my childhood. Their cousins too: Joan Baez, Simon & Garfunkel, Judy Collins... none are forgotten. You need only listen to the many versions of Sound of Silence to know that what I say is true. My nephews who are in their 30s are aware and appreciative of this wonderful tradition. It lives on in Irish music and in some country music, especially that which has political, patriotic and faithful overtones. Many of us stand with you and all is not lost. Ronald Reagan and his emulators have said The Best Is Yet To Come. Change is hard won and often painful but what is great about the United States will survive. People like me have you to thank. Look upward and outward and keep the spirit of hope that is so evident in those songs alive. You Are Not Alone. I think perhaps I know another song that might cheer you. It goes like this: When peace like a river attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roar, whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, it is well, it is well with my soul. May the good Lord bless and keep you. May He lift His countenance upon you and give you peace... there is one other song that might help: One Day at a Time, Sweet Jesus, that's all I'm asking of you. Just give me the strength to do everyday what I have to do. Yesterday's gone, sweet Jesus and tomorrow may never be mine. Lord help me today. Show me the way, one day at a time. My prayers are with you and anyone who may read these words. Instead of trolling or Doomsday-ing, let's pray for each other, our beleaguered elderly president, our country and our troubled world.
I grew up with Peter, Paul and Mary's music as a backdrop and was privileged to see them live in Australia in the late nineties. The full moon rising behind the stage and them performing was truly memorable. RIP Mary.
I’ve been a fan of Peter, Paul and Mary since the 60s, but I never heard them sing the song “the first time ever I saw your face.” I wasn’t aware of that until it was a bigger hit later. What a gorgeous and serene, but moving, rendition this is. Fabulous concert. Thank you for sharing it with all of us!
Shaped my perception of the world. Love their music so much that my life long friends started a folk group. Learned to play and sing everyone song PP&M recorded. It us now posted on You Tube by my talented Grandson. We called ourselves The Grouppe. We may never pass this way again. 😊
I loved the group for so many years when I was young. And when I went to sea on a submarine just a couple years later, and then subsequently sent to shore duty, one of the first thing I did was to buy a record player, and a Peter, Paul and Mary album. I had missed them so much. Each of them were an incredible artist by themselves, but the synergy of all 3 could not be overlooked. Seeing them again, so many decades after that time brought back some favorite old memories. Thank you for sharing.
Had the thrill of seeing them live in concert while in college in 1966. Their music was great. Their harmony was flawless and pristine and their performances were heartfelt and endearing. My favorite group all time. Really miss them.
I saw them several times, as well as Mary as a solo artist. There's simply nothing that compares to those voices singing together. I have loved them for many years.
Thank you for sharing This beautiful Peter,Paul, and Mary's pice of history And to think we sang The times they are a changing At my 8th grade graduation Wow 1970
Such incredible performers! Flawless and polished, but with unmistakable stage presence, and a perfectly balanced harmonic blend. Three of their songs, "If I Had A Hammer," "Puff, the Magic Dragon", and "Blowin' In the Wind," were among my earliest memories as I became musically aware, and evoke such strong, pleasant memories of my youth. How unfortunate it is that the political theory which animated much of that era's music, whatever good has come from it, has matured into the dark and insane plague we suffer today.
"How unfortunate it is that the political theory which animated much of that era's music, whatever good has come from it, has matured into the dark and insane plague we suffer today." What was heartfelt idealism morphed into rigid authoritarianism.
Their songs have more meaning now then they ever did are we so blind and deaf 🧏♀️ still or its just that we dont want to move out of our comfort zone and pretend its so far away on the other side of the world untill unfortunately theres a 9/11 or a 7 october 2023 what is going to move us out of our security zone I wonder ???
They are great live and Also on PBS. Peter Yarrow was answering phones during the pledge drive. They are a significant part of American Folk music and will be remembered fondly. RIP Mary Travers abd best wishes for Peter and Paul.
Such incredible harmony with the three great voices and the guitars. A very simple assembly but with so much incredible and powerful impact! They are among the most beautiful thing the world has to offer.
Three so very talented singers singing as if they were united into one voice. Such mellow and precise delivery of word and lyrics. The duel guitars mastered the rhythms of melody and played the tune in total harmony with their voices. What a beautiful gift that they gave to the audience. It is a masterpiece of music making at its subtle finest. My heart is so happy to have been there, with them, and now to hear them again in view and recording, to applaud, and let a tiny tear fall for them and what they gave to us..fBk
If only the changes we made had been for the better. It breaks my heart to think of what we could have done but didn’t. If we had only listened to the poets and singers…….
So great to relive hearing and seeing this group. In 1962 or 1963, my fraternity brother, Fred Donner, ran around the fraternity house telling us all that we had to go to the Diag and hear this group that was performing for free. Those of us who did were rewarded in a way that none of us will ever forget. As to singers whose voice rings like a bell, the best has always been Linda Ronstadt.
If you like singers with a bell quality I'd recommend a young RU-vidr called Allison Young. She does covers that are totally fresh as well her own writing.
Love Peter, Paul and Mary. Good to see Mary young. My wife died in 2009 as well. Guess my favorite song is Puff the Magic Dragon. Grand daughters like it too. Mary was the queen of hair flips.😁 Love to put on a cd and sing along with them.
Lets hear it for that bass player. Dude is an absolute machine. "Jesus met a woman", "The whole wide world around", and many others would be severely lacking without him cookin' like a locomotive!
The first concert I ever went to was Peter, Paul, and Mary in Washington, DC, 1963. The opening act was Roger Miller. I was a junior in high school (Northwestern High), and I took a girl who, I discovered on the way, had never heard of them. She did not understand exactly why we were going to a Les Paul and Mary Ford concert, but she was game I was a junior in high school living in College Park, Maryland. I could not believe I was actually hearing them in person. PS She only knew Les Paul and Mary Ford from the ad: "When the values go up up up, and the prices go down down down," and so on... She was pleasantly surprised.
True...so true. Perfect harmony ...53 here my papa introduced me to them when I was a child. Love them even more now and strangely enough I'm reintroducing them to my papa because I think he forgot how good they are
I weep for the innocence lost. 1965 we were beginning our decline as a great nation by continuing our involvement in a war the government knew we could never win.
Thank whatever powers be that we still can resonate with this (meaning P, P & M and their music and musicianship) and recognize it as powerful and significant
