What a justified career this composer has had since writing this symphony. He's up there in the top 10 living composers in the world today. And rightly so.

There is a handfull of recent composers (I prefer not calling them modern) that still can transfer an artistic message to a wider audience, regardless all the proclaimed crisis of modern music that earned its bad reputation by using irritating means to provoke listeners to such degree that noone could stand it any more. Despite we live in harsh moment of human existance, we still seem able to accept the beauties from masterly arranged sound frequencies, diatonic melody treated with logic of sense for development and form. Vasks belongs to a group of composers that are being revealed and more appreciated owing to You Tube, and both performers and lovers of good music enjoy the fact his music opens the entirely new universes within our souls, reminding us that we all somehow feel the same need to resonate triggered by such music, and we should be grateful for existance of such authors. Similar composers are also Eric Whitacre, Morten Lauridsen, Arvo Part, Ola Gejlo,... whose works resemble beauty despite the fact they use modern musical speech.

I will make everything to make him more played in Europe and Aisa!

Why is this composer so little played?

Because an unknown name on the programme scares away the concertgoers that expect to be served their umpteenth mix of Beethoven, Mozart, Mendelssohn et al. and less audience means less money. It may sound cynical, but that's the modern concert climate for you: $$$ and nothing else.

@@mrtchaikovsky Not cynical at all; it is the unfortunate reality. Actually, some of us are different (you too I hope); I would travel some considerable distance to see a performance of this man's music.

@@stevenscrutton1963 I for one am glad that we have the internet; although for the largest part it is made up of rubbish, it helped me to discover so much music I could otherwise only dream of. Regarding Vasks, I have personally come to prefer his works for strings and his chamber music (the string quartets and the piano quartet are exquisite), but his english horn concerto is well worth a listen as well. Cheers!

Because he doesn't mimic Beethoven

All the so called ‘holy minimalists’ are under represented on airwaves- with exception of Arvo Part
