The Petersburg Animal Shelter is closed for at least the next two weeks due to a virus outbreak.
According to the City of Petersburg, parvo, a highly contagious viral disease, affected dogs in the shelter on Tuesday, August 13.
The virus is known for its severe impact on dogs’ gastrointestinal systems, particularly in puppies, and can spread rapidly in environments where animals are housed in close proximity. Hopewell Animal Shelter Supervisor Amanda Hoak said her facility is still recovering from a parvo outbreak that happened a week ago.
“We had three puppies contract parvo,” Hoak said. “One of them, while en route to the emergency vet, did not survive. The other two were able to be treated and are making a full recovery as we speak.”
