Clematis are one of our favorite sun-loving, gorgeous, flowering vines that naturally twine around supports or can sprawl as a groundcover. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist, and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about the benefits of growing Clematis in your garden. Along with beautiful blooms, there is so much more clematis have to offer. They prefer to grow in full sun environments, but the lighter colored varieties can tolerate partial shade conditions. As with most perennials, we recommend fertilizing with ‪@EspomaOrganic‬ Plant-tone® and Iron-tone® to provide nutrients for those showy blooms. Most of the varieties we grow at Petitti’s are award-winning varieties, bred by Raymond Evison. His Clematis varieties are vigorous, repeat bloomers, and grow 3-4′, perfect for patio pots, all the way up to 8′ tall. One thing to remember when growing clematis in your garden, they prefer to have their face in the sun and their feet in the shade. For gorgeous shades of purple, look for varieties such as Zara®, Fleuri®, Bernadine®, and Diamantina® (which also has beautiful double blooms). If you prefer pink flowers in the garden, check Charmaine®, Cherokee®, Abeline®, or Sarah Elizabeth®.

Best Clematis information I have ever heard! Thank you so much for this video. I have a question, if winter has exposed my clematis roots, should I dig it up and replant it or just put more soil on top of it to cover the exposed roots?
@PetittiGardenCenters
@PetittiGardenCenters Год назад
Thanks so much for watching! We recommend applying 1-2" of compost or Sweet Peet to cover the exposed roots, then at the end of May, apply 1" of mulch to keep moisture in and weeds away from the crown of the plant.

We just got one from Costco. The pot is about 8 inches wide. Should I repot immediately, or can I let it grow for a year and then do a repot. We want to keep this next to our fence. Thanks for Video

Great info, not sure if I missed it, but I was looking for the “growing zone”. I’m in central California (9B), trying to see if Clematis would survive in our relentless heat.

We recommend checking with a local, independent garden center for more information on what varieties grow best in your area!

Thank you so much for the detailed introduction of clematis, I've been wanting to plant them, but hesitated till I learned more from your video. Do you ship within Ohio? I live in Bellbrook Ohio. Would like to purchase online from your garden center.

Hello. I enjoyed the video. I have a climbing clematis on my mailbox. It’s bloomed already. Now, I’m just seeing leaves with ‘eyelashes’. Should I cut them off to force more blooms?

Well can I correct something misspoke if you plant it a bit deeper you can still get clematis wilt but by planting deeper your protecting the crown of your vine insuring it grow back for that parts under ground. But you can still get the wilt if planted deeper on the portion that is to above ground just cut it off and trash that and watch your vine sprout from the ground .

Should we repot immediately ? We just got one from Costco in a 2 gallon pot. Can we wait till this winter and repot in next spring ? Thanks for the Video
@PetittiGardenCenters

Clematis can be grown in a container, but we recommend planting it in a larger container, 12" wide or larger at this time, so it can grow a larger root system. Be aware that Clematis will need to be protected over winter by moving the pot into a cold garage or by sinking the pot into the ground and mulching it. After 2-3 seasons of growing in its container, it will need to be root pruned and re-potted back into the same pot with fresh planting mix to continue to thrive. Feed it in spring (now) with Plant-tone and Iron-tone, repeat applications in midsummer. More info about growing Clematis is available here: www.petittigardencenter.com/clematis-care-and-varieties/

@PetittiGardenCenters thanks for the reply. I'll repot them. One last question- Does these survive in windy weather? Here in North Dallas we always get 5-10mph winds.

The information is good and well presented but you are only talking about a specific group of clematis. Please don’t give the impression that all groups of clematis are the same,. For example, if you plant Spring flowering clematis, atragenes and montanas etc with their crowns below soil level you will kill them. It is really only the large flowered hybrids that need to be planted more deeply as they will reshoot from below the crown. Early a spring ones do not. It would be helpful if you could clarify this please. Ken Black
