can't tell from the video, maybe someone who bought it already knows: can you see through the app/video how much food is left in the tray, if any?

Yes, you can because the camera has a wide angle (01:15). However you'll see it in SD, for HD you need to pay a subscription.

If you want HD instead of SD and (I think) see the recorded events, yes you need to pay. Free subscription only includes SD video and maybe 1 day of events (premium covers 7 days and "extra" premium covers 30 days). Oh, and even if you pay, you keep getting ads. Yay.
