Even 5 years later, your homebrewed casting sand is still far less expensive than commercial Petrobond. Sure, the price of Polyblend has gone up in the intervening time - now at our local Home Depot, a 25 Lbs bag will set you back $19.59 (but they'll deliver it for free :) This is still at least eight times cheaper which amounts to serious savings for the DYI'er. Thank you so much for doing these videos. I can well imagine many people new to the ancient art of metal cast will continue to appreciate your contributions for many years to come.
Thank you for doing this. I went through 5 videos before I found yours and it was the first one I could get all the way through. It was great and a big help. Complete and NOT boring. Hope you make more!
Thank you for showing me this! Looks kinda like camp Verde AZ a little bit. I'm from Flagstaff. I have been using green sand and I'm not liking my castings as much. Petrobond is kind of expensive so this is a life saver.
Thank you I've just started casting brass swords and axes and things of that nature. The sand is really expensive I'm going to try this for my next casting session.
Thanks a lot for the video, I admire and have deep respect for what you do. Many people can’t be useful once they retire, while others like you will be of great help to others even after they die.
This is amazing, your almost like the Bob Ross of metal smelting 😊 (100% ment as a complement 😉, your focused manner and love of the craft really shows😊). Just found the channel and I'm loving all your videos, just subbed. 😁 Was wondering if this would work with, building sand (sifted by me), and "used" motor oil (filtered by me)? 🤔😁 Or do you think that the binding agents in the grout are essential? 😅 I also have no idea if the motor oil having been "used"(in car etc) has an impact, or which grade of oil it is? 😅 I'm just trying to recycle as much use as I can from what materials I have available. 😅 Would be amazing if I could find something sustainable, but I'm guessing it's never going to be quite as simple as add oil to regular sand. 😅 However if I could use "used" motor oil and grout mix that would be much closer/cheaper. 😁 Would love to benefit from your wisdom on these points, and apologies if they have already been covered in the video. 😊😅
Good day George King, In my experience most sand after being sifted may work using a clay type binder would be more sustainable if you had no access to the sanded tile grout and oil. You would have just have to baby sit the moisture fun mold and cats and fun things like that.LOL Simply omit the water all together. Simply add oil no water...... The binder in the sanded tile grout is portland. I have also used it with used crank oil (unfiltered) in a test w/good results except it turns your petrobond sand mix dark and dirty. Recipe: 25# SANDED TILE GROUT (WE PREFER THE BRIGHT WHITE) AND ADD 1 QUART OF 30wt MOTOR OIL. TOOLS WON'T RUST W/OIL BOND SAND EASIER ON YOUR HANDS, DOESN'T FREEZE AND THE CAT STAY OUT OF IT!!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND ALSO FOR SUBSCRIBING, WE NEVER THOUGHT WE WOULD BE DOING THIS..... WELCOME INTO ALL THE PROJECTS! BLESSINGS! CASEY & MARISUE
We (silver keys and I) got this process going finally and after getting the oil mixed into the grout I ran the mix through screen colander to break up the lumps. Seems to even things out a bit more and am hoping will speed up the process a bit.
We are looking forward to seeing what results you get. We love the fact that you are doing projects together. Great idea, let us know how it goes. Thank you for your comment. Blessings to you all, Casey & MariSue
Sorry for the late reply, we are in Mayer near Prescott. Yes it will harden if it gets wet, we keep ours covered, if you are in Arizona, you are welcome to stop by and check ours out 😊. Thank you for your time! Blessings to you and your family! Casey & MariSue
Thank you for your comment, no we would not mix the two, try a small batch and see how it goes, we have never tried, please let us know. That is how we found our recipe 😊! We appreciate you! Casey & MariSue
Thank you for sharing. Quick question pls. Can I use regular engine lubricant used in cars as my oil? is the motor oil you used same as engine oil, I dont think I'll find this motor oil you used in my country? thanks once again
Have you ever tried to mix it in a large 5 gal pail, with a large drywall mud paddle & drill? Seems that might be a bit faster & easier. Also, how about using synthetic oil? Just wondering. Thanks for posting!
Great idea on using a paddle, we have never used synthetic oil, we would be interested in what you come up with using it. Thank you for your comment. Blessings to you and your family, Casey & MariSue
Don't use synthetic oil. The detergents that are in high concentrations in synthetic oil causes issues. Use straight -tried and true Dino oil (conventional). A straight 10w oil works well.
I've now watched this a couple of times. I commented on a different video but my main question is the possibility of using mineral oil instead of motor oil to reduce the health affects. We've made our own green sand last fall, using water + sifted sand (120 grit) and cat litter but just not happy with the results. We've remixed part of it now, using mineral oil and we're closer to good results but thinking using your idea of tile grout + mineral oil. I am using petrobond on my silver pours but he's trying to pour a brass hammer head and haven't had success yet. We've both got videos posted of all that. I can post links if you like. Thank you!
Hello Silver Keys, yes we have transitioned to mineral oil w/good results about 6 months ago. It is good to see someone else coming up with good ideas and yes a muller would be much better, though you know so many aspirations, never enough time in the day. Thank you for your comment. Blessings to you and your family, Casey & MariSue
@@5tonswguns219 THANK YOU FOR YOUR QUICK REPLY! I am so pleased to know you also switched. I think the smoke and exposure to it is safer. Is the ratio about the same? I'll invest in some tile grout and start over if so! Hum....a miller. Well, I'm not sure we can build one that would work any better than trying to find a finer sand to start with.We picked up a food processor at the refuse bin and used it to grind our litter up but we think the real issue is the grain size of the sand. Too large. Yes, not enough time to make and do all we'd like to make and do, for sure!
Yes, that would certainly make it an expense petro bondat 65$ a quart. We have been using mineral oil for a bit and are even happier with the results. Thank you Blessings to you and your family, Casey & MariSue.
It will mix it, it will be dusty, some mixers have covers you can buy. The big thing is cleaning the oil out of the mixer, before mixing actual concrete and water.
Just wondering why you couldn’t use used oil Granted it’s not something you want to go bare handed with but it’s not like it’ll make the burn off much more toxic to your health I’m actually curious if anybody as tried it with good results
Good idea Randy, possibly, if you can put enough power to turn it, such as a hobart bread dough mixer. Thank you for your comment. Blessings to you and your family. Casey & MariSue
Hello B Kailua, we were fortunate to run across some old stock at a yard sale. Thank you for your comment. Blessings to you and your family. Casey & MariSue
