Had a 94 Hilux 2.8L diesel, slug on road, beast off road, now own an 02 3.4L V6, Beast on and off road, miss the low range torque but love the power of the V6 and much easier to maintain without the need for more complex tools, the 5VZ-FE is one of the most under rated engines

Those 5VZ motors are an absolute weapon. Non interference and good on the loud pedal and even have great torque down low.. that motor needs to make a comeback. It's the only V6 that doesn't sound like crap either and actually has a pretty tough note to it

From here in the States, you also have to consider even more things: 1. When new, diesels cost as much as 5k US more than the same vehicle with a gasoline (petrol) engine. 2. The cost of Diesel in the US is actually the same or sometimes higher than gasoline per liter (gallons here in the US). This is due to the very high environmental requirements for diesel fuel in the US. (we only run very very low sulfur diesel here) 3. Diesel is much harder to come by in the US than in other countries, gasoline is as common as water. 4. In some states, you actually CANNOT purchase a brand new diesel passenger vehicle as the state environmental rules actually BAN new non-commercial diesel vehicles from being sold. This is due to enviro regs dating from the 1980's when diesel engines in America were horrible black smoke blowing monstrosities. So in America, Diesel 4wd vehicles are as rare as hen's teeth. Almost everything has a gasoline power plant in it.

I was just about to make a post like yours, thanks for beating me to it. One other thing I'd like to mention about diesel in the States (or at least in CO), Diesel price per gallon doesn't fluctuate near as much as gasoline prices. Gas prices can shoot up (or down) 50 cents in a couple days, diesel usually doesn't change by more than 30 cents in a month. Diesel is nearly always more expensive per gallon than gasoline here; I can remember only two occasions in the last 3 years where diesel was cheaper.
@Malc664
@Malc664 4 года назад

As a truckie running in the remote areas of Australia for the past 30+ years, I went with the 1HD-T in a virtually stock 80 Series about 10 years ago. For the same reasons as you pointed out, fuel availability in remote areas, low end torque, mechanical simplicity over electronic complexity, & with 4 kids I needed a bus that would tackle anything Australia had to offer. She was high mileage, but meticulously serviced by a retired truckie, who toured Australia with a light pop top caravan for 3 years. Purchased for $12k. Since buying this she has now clocked up just over 750,000km. As she is so long in the tooth, I had the gearbox & transfer case rebuilt this year, & also had a Mark's Part-time 4wd kit installed with Aisin hubs. Next on my list is the engine. I have weighed up the pros & cons of 6BT v Duramax v 1HD-T rebuild, & have decided to rebuild the 1HD-T, with a 4500 stroker crank. I know there is a mob that has made amazing figures on a 1HZ & a 1HD-TFE, but now I cant find them. So any leads some of you have would be great. Also I would like to hear pros & cons in top mount v front mount intercoolers. I was thinking about grafting a 79 Series scoop onto the 80 Series bonnet for a top mount. Cheers

Lots of people are insured with three inch lifts. Right up to that moment you make a claim. Then the insurance company says nah mate. Not legal. In W.A your only aloud a maximum of 50 mm lift to overall height of the vehicle this includes suspension and tyres. Any higher then it’s off to the pits or engineers for new paperwork. As Jordy T said most insurance companies won’t say a thing about it. Take your money until you make a claim.
@Phil_McAvity
@Phil_McAvity 4 года назад
Jordy T . I could get “insured” with anyone. The first question they’ll ask when starting a new insurance policy is “is you vehicle compliant to the road worthy standard?”. All you say is “yes”, then as if by magic your insured, until you get involved in a serious crash.

Not forgetting that a basic diesel will run in water as long as it has compression and its air intake is above the water level. A petrol requires a spark on each cylinder, on every cycle to ignite, so you have to go to town on waterproofing electrics if you plan on deep wading. Once a diesel is up to temperature after a couple of km's, the glow plugs switch off and it just keeps going!
@archygrey9093
@archygrey9093 Год назад
For older diesels and petrols with distributors this is the case but with modern electronic controlled common rail diesels i don't think there is much of a difference anymore, petrols are far less sensitive to water now whilst diesel has gotten more sensitive

As we Americans know Diesel engines are limited to heavy duty / mostly work trucks “for the most part”. We don’t have as many options to choose from, that being said the gas engines we have are responsive, sound great and powerful, “for the most part”. Gotta love a good ol’V8!!!
@jeepsterdaddy37
@jeepsterdaddy37 4 года назад
Here in the USA, up until recently pretty much all our trucks with diesel engines were built for towing and were far heavier than ones with gas engines. There's a ridiculous amount of small block v8 gassers on rigs here especially with the newer all aluminum light weight and very reliable LS based engines. It's cool to finally see our trucks and SUV's coming out with smaller diesels in them and/or people swapping them into their rigs with one's out of older car's and such. Id love to have a cheap diesel that has the same weight and power as a small block gasser but it's not going to happen cheaply or easily at all. I have both now but for different reasons and love both for different reasons. Edit: here in the USA, most of the country gas is a lot easier to get. There's many stations around me that don't sell diesel at all and live in Oklahoma which is full of diesels. Also, we don't have near as much open country to wheel like Australia and a few other country's. We have quite a bit but nothing like Australia at all and that sucks.

Yeah these guys are backwards from us in the States. I was thinking of swapping a diesel into my montero but it was just too expensive to get 200hp. I ended up going with a 5.3 and its almost done, and for a lot cheaper than a diesel. It would be nice to get 30mpg though

The vehicles were a Landcruiser 200, Y62 supercharged Patrol and a large American diesel ute. Much to everyone's surprise, the petrol Patrol not only towed the van more easily than the diesel 200 series, it had more performance and used less fuel! Very enlightening. The modern petrols can be as economical as a diesel.

Also,, 185rwhp (dyno’d) plus 560NM is not too shabby for a simple chip tune. These are now available with 3 dash-set tunes : extreme power, towing power and economy - no need to sacrifice economy for performance except when you want! Here in the states, mud holes are dominated by gasoline trucks. Diesel trucks are usually looked at as towing / work vehicles. They are also very expensive because we don’t have many cars/ non offroad vehicles that are diesel. Our laws are also too damn strict to get the best performance
@desertdan100
@desertdan100 4 года назад
I'm in the Midwest in the United States. We love our diesels for low end grunt and longevity. We have alot of large full size 4x4 trucks that we play with especially in the mud. We also have an almost Cultist following of our inline six cylinder engines especially Jeep guys. We also like the low end grunt out of these engines but like having that higher RPM range for our Mud and snow running. The ford 300 cu. in. and jeep 242 or 258 inline six cylinders are also well known for going over 300, 000 miles before wearing out. We love them both gas and diesel. Luckily over here we can find gas anywhere. The one detrimental thing for us in many areas is the Northern climates. We run the risk of Gelling up and not starting in the cold winter months. We have to keep pouring the anti-gel products into the tank which adds even more costs and have to worry about bio-diesel fungus and changing fuel filters constantly. We still think it is worth it for our diesels though. I enjoyed your conversation and the pros and cons. Keep her right side up guys remember no wheels in the air.

Towing, off roading and camping and I work out of it throughout the week. The difference at the pump isn’t as big as people think, usually running around the 15l per hundred to 20 when towing heavy loads. If you like to go muddling and rock climbing, diesel torque is the way to go. 1 thing worth mentioning is if you want to go Mudding in a petrol 4x4 you NEED TO GET A PRODUCT CALLED LECTRA SHIELD FROM CRC Products. I had a disco 1 v8 running almost underwater without misfiring when I got pinned on the diffs. Quick note I now drive a hzj105 on 35s and would never go back to a petrol anything 👍 Cheers fellas top job as always

My petrol 80 series is a beast . 460k unopened and runs like brand new . 15k services and no pesky timing belts . I love it and it is made to last 1 million k's before the 1st major overhaul . No known factory defaults . Overall roughly the same to run as a diesel 80 . Yet a lot cheaper to fix and to purchase . Go the FZJ80

I've had both petrol and diesel 4wd's and like them both but I've just gone back to petrol after having two diesel vehicles in a row, the main reason being it's an fzj80 in great condition for a sensible price, overall it's cheaper all things considered to own petrol I have found, all the reasoning you've put forward is true.

Main point is that river crossing with petrol equals a non-sparking motor. Whereas a diesel will run underwater as long as it gets air.

Had a Petrol Jackaroo 3.5V6. Cost me nothing over 12 years, except some petrol. When booting it over 3000rpm it took off with a delightful growl. Brilliant. Now I have a GU7 diesel Patrol - it cost me a bloody fortune to make it feel less like a slug - forever dipping hand into wallet. When booting it at any revs it just doesn't take off at all, and definitely doesn't have a delightful growl. I still like it though, but it might have been cheaper to put a LS into it instead of pouring money after money into the diesel.

I've got 2uz v8 with unichip and exhaust, makes max torque 1200rpm, and hauls. One of the greatest v8's ever made. I'm a huge fan of the diesel v8s but I wouldn't swap this engine. Also like to thank.u boys for the $199 oricom deal installed that on the weekend

one thing to point out with a diesel is you cannot get away with overheating one... you also need compression :)

The Isuzu engine in my old rodeo is rock solid, and I just love the sound of an old diesel. An advantage of the diesel is that if I want more power I can turn up the boost and fuel in and roll coal

If your out in remote places and put a bad batch of diesel in your vehicle your fuel system is stuffed but with a petrol have a bit of a miss but the fuel system don't need over hauling

Just brought my first 4wd and was keen to get a diesel, but when the options for the same price are a petrol with 15 thousand kms vs a diesel with 200k it's was an ovbious choice.

Well, for example here in the US, we have the Ford F150. 2 of the engines are ecoboost engines, a twin turbo 2.7L V6 and a Twin Turbo 3.5L v6. I have the 3.5, and it makes 370hp and 420lb/ft of torque factory. After a tune only, it can gain that level of power at the wheels and not just crankshaft power figures. The engines have been touted as diesel like in torque delivery, because its 400+lb/ft at around 1500rpm.

I have a petrol as Suzuki Jimnys only came out here with the donks. Love the thing, doesn't make tons of power or torque but boy with the locker and reduction gears there are not many places she wont crawl even on 27.5" tyres haha. I love the ability to rev her out, something about getting into a stick of bother and having the rpm to double your speed through. I toured with her if you don't remember seeing me and her in the the VIC highcountry in dec 2018, (during the first time the new dMax was used) I also inherited a patrol from the old man, the slow 2.8lt diesel GU, been in the family since she was bought second hand at 6 months old. She has been a very reliable girl with only a handful of bigger mechanical failures in the last 20 years, the torque is nice compared to the zook and cruises on the highway better but she definitely is slow around town. The GU has towed the family and the c-van around the country and will probably turn into my touring rig as she is still low km and a well kept stocker.

We used to have Series 2 Land Rovers in the Army, they went to places I didn't want to walk. 3/4 ton Rover with a ton on board and 3/4 ton trailer with at least a ton and we went over the same type of tracks that were as bad as what you drive on.

Went from a 3L turbo diesel (1KZTE in a Hilux Surf) to a 3.7L V6 petrol in a Jeep. I took careful note of all running costs over a year and the 3.7L V6 Jeep won out in terms of running costs. The biggest killer by far in my country was the "Road User Charges" that diesels have. There's government taxes built into petrol costs but due to different types of diesel vehicles the tax is done separately via this cost... The current RUC for a 2 axle diesel "ute" / "pickup" under 3.5 tonnes is $72 per 1,000Km's.

We took a J8, and put a petrol engine in the rear. Front end grabs with all that tourqe going up a steep grade, then we kick it in an the petrol gives those high rev's when you have to give it to get up the long grade.

U fellas woulda loved how my old 75 series cruiser looked rolling into Lockhart River from Cairns. master cylinder went on the brakes on the PDR so 4th to 2nd dwn the to the floodways, ended up snapping the leaf spring pins on the axle and the axle on the tinny trailer shifted a wheel width left before the u-bolt came off. Crabbed walked the cruiser with a smashed windscreen into lockhart with trailer n boat on tray 14hrs later

The only thing currently here in SA is making it very hard for our 4WD Action SA fans to enjoy this new shed series with you guys;is having a cold beer with you guys. Our enormous clever president has put a "no alcohol sale" al over SA, don't know till when. So in the meen time we must enjoy the show without any refreshments

mechanically injected diesels (not including electronically control mechanical pumps) are hard to beat, minimal electrics, no ecu, no limp mode, will run underwater as long as the intake can breath and is sealed, very simple to work on ,but they lack in power and require more maintenance than petrols but are very reliable and still get the job done

As an American, I'm going to say the vast majority of our 4 wheel drive vehicles are Gasoline powered. There hasn't been a lot of good diesel options. Not to say our diesels are bad, they're, but they're all almost exclusively in massive (4 and 5 ton), fullsize pick up trucks that are 20 feet long. You rarely see a diesel rig on the trail because they don't fit.

I think range is the biggest advantage of diesels. Here in the US it's nearly impossible to fit an auxiliary gasoline tank, but diesel is no problem. Unfortunately we don't get the great smaller diesel options available to the rest of the world thanks to the over the top emissions regulations here. Chevrolet is even discontinuing the diesel option in the Colorado here.
