As with any pressurized device, the gaskets will deteriorate over time. Same with this Petromax Lantern which did not like to be shut off any more. Replacing the responsible gasket meant taking the whole thing apart - and so I went ahead and cleaned it up a little, flushed the tank, replaced the nozzle with a smaller one - and installed a new burner after I had discovered the old one was missing all together. Enjoy!

Hi Adrian, another excellent tutorial. I bought this exact same lamp 35yrs ago, as a night fishing light. It's still going strong, annual o ring and nozzle pricker changes, decarburizing, and as required mantle replacements are all that's needed to keep it running sweetly. Mine is so bright, it's impossible to look at without being blinded for minutes. I've added highly polished chrome plated shutters to protect the glass and also direct the light. Here in the U.K., parts are still easily obtainable Thanks again. Stuart

The light output of these things is tremendous - especially when all you're used to is a standard oil lamp with a wick in it. I'm glad I have the shade for it - otherwise it would be quite a blind-maker when operating! All the best Adrian

Great stuff Adrian, especially making the knob! I've got two of these, I'm glad that parts are still so widely available.
@AstraWerke
@AstraWerke 5 лет назад
Thanks, I was surpriseed how well the Knob turned out, as I don't really do freehand turning that often! It sure is a relief to have spare parts for such an old lamp just an online order away - although it has to be said they are not the same quality as the old lamp. The cleaner needle is stamped metal instead of milled and the nozzle didn't seat properly and would let gases leak everywhere, until I stuffed the thread with graphited yarn. It's still amazing that the company even exists after all these years though.

@@AstraWerke For sure, interesting history, this petroleum max guy :) on pelam.de there are a lot of stories concerning the new accessories like the stainless burner head etc. But who cares, these lamps really are a joy to operate.

Usually, I shut them pressure lamps down by releasing pressure from the fuel vessel. That reduces the smell significantly

It's good to see that you're still making old things working again, Adrian. Keep up the good work! I remember reading a few of your short stories a long time ago, is there something happening as well or are you now solely into mechanics?

Dankesehr!

I have a problem I hope you will take the time to review: I bought a Wenzel Petromax clone. It got clogged. I removed the generator, and the rod inside it. After replacing the tip, I cannot get the rod to "catch" on the throttle, so it won't go up and down (making the wire tip go in and out of the little tiny aperture), so I cannot use it. Any ideas how to get the internal rod to "catch?"

Super video! I just took delivery of an old Petromax 829 today Sehr informativ, danker. Your turning of the brass knob was fantastic! Also this is the first time I have seen demonstration of the replacing lead washer/seal. Did you clean carbon from the control rod and inside the generator tube?
@AstraWerke
@AstraWerke 4 года назад
Thank you! The lead washer has to be replaced whenever taking the main valve out of the tank which can be annoying if you need to fiddle with adjustments of the valve rod, but rubber gaskets are also available which are reuseable. To remove carbon from inside the generator, I'd suggest using bicycle brake cable. It can be fed around the tight corners by rotating it in the direction it is twisted and works just like a wire brush inside the tubes.

I had one petromax, but it is missing all superior parts, the glass, and i believe that i must do what you did in the burner. Could you help me? Where did you buy the parts? In time, I in Brazil. Thanks in advance.

Petromax is still in Business! Just look up their website ( www.petromax.de/en ) and you can order any spare part you need.

Is the fuel gasoline or lamp oil? I prefer the petromax design over the US made Coleman. 31 45B

This one is made to run on lamp oil. It'll also run on either high quality Diesel or a 50/50 mix of lamp oil and low quality Diesel.

Hello, great video and job. Could you tell me the dimension of the globe because I can buy the same baby 821 but with no globe, I can't find the answer. Thank you very much :)

Hi, if you're talking about the Glass cylinder, it's 90mm in diameter, if you mean the light emitter, I use the one for 300 candle power. Best Wishes Adrian

@@AstraWerke Yes I was talking about the Glass cylindre. 90 mm in diameter, do you know the height ? Thank you very much for answering, appreciated :)
@AstraWerke
@AstraWerke 2 года назад
@@-AD-- Height would be around 110mm. Could be a little more, since it's partially hidden in the lamp.

For turning it off why mot turn it off and depressive it?
@AstraWerke
@AstraWerke Год назад
Shutting it off with the handwheel gives a nasty bang which could wreck the mantle. De-pressurizing it is more "peaceful"

Yes, I think it is supposed to be turned off just by releasing the pressure from the small tank cap screw. If I understand it correctly this way the generator-tube will get the vapor out and be quite empty for storage so this could prevent it getting cloaked in ash. If you turn the needle out, the liquid fuel stays in the generator as long as then next start. Maybe it burns in there because a lot of heat still remains for a long time after shutting off.
