Today's nostalgic tour of the past and trip down memory lane, takes me to southern California to visit the graves of some of the cast members of the 1960s tv sitcom Petticoat Junction and to remember Hooterville and the Shady Rest Hotel.
Famous graves visited, include:
Bea Benaderet (Kate Bradley)
Edgar Buchanan (Uncle Joe Carson)
Smiley Burnette (Charlie Pratt)
Rufe Davis (Floyd Smoot)
Hank Patterson (Fred Ziffel)
Higgins (the Shady Rest dog)
I also remember Pat Buttram (Mr. Haney), Frank Cady (Sam Drucker), Meredith MacRae (Billie Jo Bradley) and Pat Woodell (Bobbie Jo Bradley).

BEA BENEDARAT was also in an episode of I Love Lucy. On one of the episodes, after she died, they used a stand in and filmed from the back. Great idea. Meredith died from breast cancer at a young age..

She was cast as the original Granny. She gave it up after Irene Ryan read for it. Paul Henning was very found of Bea and created P.J. for her. Edgar B. also played Ward Cleaver's uncle Billy on LITB.

Mr. Paul Henning was the creater and main script writer for all three: The Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction and Green Acres. His daughter Linda Kaye Henning, played Betty Jo on Pettycoat Junction. According to his Wikipedia page, many of the shows' characters and the storylines were all inspired by real family/friends lives and experiences. ❤

The CBS executives hated the "ruralfication" of it's comedy line-up in the 1960s. Although The Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction and Green Acres were getting good ratings, they axed them anyway. Then replaced them with shows like "The Jeffersons" and "All In The Family." Sit-com have never been the same since.

Paul Henning did not create Green Acres. One of Paul Henning writers from the Petticoat Junction named Jay Sommers came up with the idea. Henning only served as the executive producer for Green Acres. He was also responsible for the casting of Green Acres

Bea Benederet's husband suffered a heart attack and died at her funeral. He was buried alongside her 3days later. Bea's son was actor Jack Bannon. He appeared on several episodes of P.J. He died in 2017 at 77 years old. Edgar Buchanan was actually a dentist, as was his wife. They met at dental school. He turned his half of their dental practice over to her when he became a full time actor.

According to Jack Bannon, (Bea's' Son) in an Interview about Petticoat Junction, he Was Driving back from her funeral in a car With Eugene Twombly when he suffered the heart attack that took his life, Jack Bannon said, 'Basically, He Died in my arms'.

Great vid. I was at an Angel game years ago when an elevator door opened and out stepped this bigger than life cowboy, Gene Autry, with an entourage of about 6 friends, all in big cowboy hats. Gene owned the Angel's. Its sobering to realize that no matter how rich or popular you are we'll all end up in the same place.

I find it so sad that Meredith McRae died at age 56 which is my age. Makes me nervous when I hear people dying so young. She was very beautiful and so where all the other ladies that played on that show. I try not to miss it when it is on Saturdays on Me-TV. It is a great show to watch and it is so sad that we don't have good shows like were out in the 60s, 70s and 80s being produced again. My daughter is 28 and she loves watching all of the show's I grew up with. Morality has taken a steep dive in Hollywood over the many years and we don't see all of those kind of show's any longer. Too bad for America. Thanks for reruns.

Before Burns & Allen she was on the Radio program called My Favorite Husband with Lucille Ball, Richard Denning, & Gale Gordon. Which later the show became I Love Lucy. Lucille Ball had considered Bea Benaderet as well as Barbara Pepper for the Role of Ethel Mertz, but Vivian Vance got the role & she was great as Ethel Mertz.

A couple times as I watched a couple old western movies on the Grit channel, I was not at the moment paying attention to the tv screen. I would hear the voices and action going on and suddenly hear that UNMISTAKABLE voice of Edgar Buchanan only to look at the tv and automatically think "Uncle Joe".

In addition, Bea also had small parts on Jack Benny's radio and television programs as a studio switchboard operator. Also, in doing some research, it was learned that Benederet was in the running to be cast as Ethel Mertz in "I Love Lucy", but she took the part of Blanche Morton, George Burns and Gracie Allen's neighbor

Frank was only 48 when he became Sam Drucker. He balded early and looked more like 68. That's why it was such a surprise that he was still living in 2012.

hi Steve, I watched Petticoat Junction when I was a kid. also I remember one movie that I loved that Edgar Buchanan was in . He was in the movie Penny Serenade with Cary Grant and Irene Dunne that is one of my favorite movies. I love one scene where Edgar Buchanan was trying to change a baby. it was hysterical. your videos are awesome. thank you so much. I had written to you recently about Evergreen Cemetery in Colorado. and how my friend and I walk it. since we had a bad snowstorm 2 weeks ago and 97 mph winds like a hurricane 13 trees at the cemetery were uprooted. today we went there and it looks like trees down all totally uprooted. but we had a nice walk. have a great day!

So cool to see these markers and memorials. I was watching Petticoat Junction, and got into the whirlwind of internet searches, and came across your video. Thank you for doing this. I'm in NC, haven't been to CA in 20 years, but I'd like to go back, just to visit some of these places. I'm 43 years old, but having a chance to see a 1940 movie with Ann Sheridan, I fell in love. She died way before I was born, but I understand her remains are also at Forest Lawn. One of these days I want to make the trip and go back out there. Thanks for your video. I truly appreciated it. Hi steve. I'm glad for channels like me tv that shows a lot of the shows that was on when I was young I can now watch they are new to me. All three shows was connected. I loved all the shows and the actors and actresses that made me laugh. Beautiful was only 60 that's young. When you are young you think it's old till you realize once you get passed 40 60 is not old at all. I'm sure I've watched this before but I enjoyed watching it again. Thank you steve. I loved Petticoat Junction and still watch it when I see it on tv channels which shows the great old classic tv shows. In fact, I even have a few DVD's of Petticoat Junction that I will watch. Smiley Burnett also played with Roy Rogers in some movies as well. Gene Autry also has a town here in Oklahoma that is named after Gene; according to what I read, the town was renamed for Gene Autry during the time he owned a ranch there; it is south of Oklahoma City (south central Oklahoma) and northeast from Ardmore, Oklahoma. Boy howdy, did you bring back some great memories of classic clean tv shows on this vlog. Ironically, Bea was the first choice of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz to play Ethel Mertz. But Bea was already committed elsewhere, so the role went to Vivian Vance.

I've known Bea Benaderet as The Voice of Betty Rubble from The Flintstones..she was the 2nd voice actor who provide the voice of the character and she became permanent voice actress..after the original voice of Betty..left only on one season..thank you for showing me to her wonderful grave..Steve.. I recall Bea Benederet mostly from the Beverly Hillbillies. I loved her Pearl Bodine character. It’s odd that her tombstone states she was born 1908 when IMDB says she was born 1906.

Loved all three shows as a kid growing up in the sixties but Petticoat was my favorite as i'm a train lover. Great episode and narration as always Steve.

Uncle Joe was also Ward Cleaver's Uncle Billy on Leave It To Beaver. He would show up with gift's for the boys that made June almost faint.

Bea Benaderate was not only a great actress, she was a great voice over actress, I didnt know she did the voice for Betty Rubble. Another great show I always enjoyed, thanks again Steve.

Fred Ziffel was a wonderful character. Bea Benaderet was a great actor. I did not know about her work in animation, interesting. She looked older being in her fifties on Petticoat Junction but I think people then aged faster then today. Her 2nd husband Eugene Twombly died just a day after Bea's funeral, of a heart attack. Enjoyed hearing about the other cast members. Thank you.

There forever capture in are heart and memory , and there roles that they choose to share is caught on film. The magic was show to us through tv , which in return drove are hearts and mind to remember there charters. May they rest in peace , Amen

I enjoyed watching Petticoat Junction as a child. I still enjoy it on RU-vid. Favorite character....... Uncle Joe! All time favorite show growing up was Dragnet. Love Jack Webb. 6/2020 Seen. Bea, was as you mentioned in Gracie Allen and George Burns show. I believe Gracie passed in 1962. George lived to 100. They're together! It was such a travesty over Bea. She tried to return to her show. I know they had a big home coming, but she had to leave. And then her husband. Very sad. I miss them all. I'll be 100 in 2021, if God allows. Still drive. Thank You Steve , very interesting I watched Petticoat Junction a little in the late 70’s . I watched Green Acres more . Ahhhh....the memories, never ceases to amaze me how young many of the actors & actresses were when they passed away 😮 I’m now their age or close , just turned 55 the 16th of this month and I’ve been a diabetic for 20 years 🌹

Steve's Trips Down Memory Lane Thank You Steve ! I had surgery in my left ear a tube & sponge , steroid drops 2x a day 🤮doing that for 4 weeks . Still can’t hear nil. Maybe I’ll get me some high dollar hearing aids , wow they are ridiculously priced 😮I need a special kind called BiCross . So Thank You for going down memory lane sure reminds me a lot of stuff as a kid ♥️🌹🌹

THIS was a great video. Direct and straight to the point. Also as Marcia mentioned! Bea was a in quite a few episodes of The Beverly Hillbillies. We you did state that serveral cast members were, But Bea was THE most regular.

As a family we enjoyed the show. Now sky (similar to cable in USA) screens this and many others on their Jones channel.I love trains anyway. Wonderful shows to watch, RIP. Tyvm Steve appreciated :)

I'm so glad we can still watch all of these old shows. There was a train whistle in the background at Bea's crypt, but my video was getting so long I didn't include it. It seemed perfect, but my camera didn't pick up the sound that great, so I decided not to include it. Thanks, Wendy.
