No kidding, lol. Came home late one night and saw the neighbor's cat on my porch, waiting for pets. As I parked the car, the lights caught it's face and I almost had a heart-attack. When you're expecting sweet floof and you get threatened possum-face, yikes!
This happened with my sister and a skunk. It came up to her as she was outside smoking a cigarette and started rubbing up on her feet doing the figure 8 around her legs. She reached down and per it and thought it was a very quite cat.
@@mechwarrior13 it still needs your help general they are all too brain dead to operate the turrets and most of them only have pipe pistols where as the brotherhood has lasers and missles
That Opossum will get home and be like "I almost died from a human today, it was the most terrifying experience I've ever gone through. it just kept _touching_ me"
"if i stay still the human does not see me" in reality it is petrified. although it opens its mouth a bit if you were to put a finger inside its mouth it would be too petrified to move its jaws in order to bite. however it would be an entirely different story if it were one with babies
i dont get how people could call opossums ugly. theyre honestly really cute and dont even bite, they just open their mouths as big as they can to look scary and i love them
I don't see anything horrifying about them though. They look kind of goofy in a cute way. ^^ But I can imagine that they would look like tiny crocodiles if they had scales instead of fluffy fur.
Opossum: spend thousands of years evolving techniques to make predators not interested in them by not moving and playing dead Human: hehe touch the angy boi
These fellas make the weirdest pets, by the way. When they bond with you, they, get kind of... disgustingly affectionate. And by disgustingly, I mean, they start trying to groom you the way they groom one another, and they are the drooliest lil buggers. I saw a family that did animal rehab, and this North American opossum that couldn't be released due to issues was insistently grooming one of them, just... freaking coating the side of his head with opossum spit, lol. Like, "Hooman, u filfy, I clen you, hol stil, fren. Hol... dangit, hol stil, I clen. Luv hooman. I clen." The lil dude had one of those pet shirts on. Grossest, most adorable thing I've ever seen. xD
Same. Except my brain doesn't struggle to understand why, it just moves to alternate universes where it lives out a thousand lives with different outcomes. By the time it returns to me, the person that showed affection has already moved on to more rewarding stuff weeks ago. I still hate my brain for that one time when the finest girl in highschool came up to me and asked if I would like to go steady with her... and for that time years later when she had become the finest woman I've ever seen, and asked me if I wanted a second chance... damned brain screwed me out of something wonderful twice, so I just resigned to killing it with shitloads of alcohol.
@@EvilFookaire Alcohol is nasty. I suggest trading that habit for a weed habit instead.. or go sober. Women are just women anyway.. doesn't matter how pretty they look.
@@Oldsoul305 maybe most people aren't directly cruel to animals but the majority don't give a damn how other people treat animals. Factory farming is a good example of thousands of animals being tortured daily and people just ignore it. Slowly killing 'pests' by poison,no one bats an eye. Unnecessary animal testing so people can wear a slightly different shade of red lipstick or have a new shampoo. The list is endless and people abuse animals daily. Frankly it's depressing how few people are actually nice to and care about animals.
@@bree9081 I honestly think that theres nothing wrong with how america treats animals. Im from cuba so i grew up in farming culture, i was a farm boy. Slaughtered my first chicken at 7 years old. People who are on the outside looking in, usually have trouble understanding how people can kill animals for profit. But its as simple as this, humans are forced to kill animals. What other solution do you see as of now? Do we just let them reproduce an overtake civilazation? Do you want to live like old times where you walk out your house and get eaten by a bear? We cant provide sanctuary for all animals if we cant kill them, how do we provide enclosure for an amount of animals that would be constantly increasing? Humans HAVE to kill animals. And i also have no problem with the way theyre treated, they get strung up for a reason. Not to torture them, but to kill as many as they can as quickly as they can. They hang them upside down to disorient them. Dont you think if they didnt have them tied they would run and cause choas after seeing a fellow cow getting killed? And as far as using animals to produce products, most of the time the animals used for these products are insects, reptiles, and amphibians. And when they use mammals all they collect is something like horse sperm which i heard is used for shampoo or something like that. Point is, i wouldnt start crying if a dude walked up to me and collected my ear wax for example, why would an animal give a shit? Bottom line is, we invest in our animals, give them happines and a home. And since we HAVE to kill them, might as well honor the animal by making sure no piece of meat or drop of milk is left to decompose and rot. The relationship between human and animal is a lot healthier than you think. Trust me if cows could talk they would thank us, becuase hanging upside down not knowing youre about to die is a lot better than being ripped shreds by a fox. Seriously, in cuba i woke up to find a half eaten cow and a really stuffed fox. Domestic animals simply cant survive without humans, they would all go extinct. Trust me, i know you feel the need to speak for animals since they cant, but if they could they would praise humans and show gratitude, not complain or protest.

You're an incredible woman. For years I've loved Opossums but my family always thought they were gross, and so did my friends. It makes me so happy to see them being respected like this. Thanks.
On the one hand, it's unlikely this possum was actually having a good time. Grats on them not freaking out, but petting by default isn't something that naturally calms most critters! Not unless they actually trust you a lot first. On the other hand, I can't blame you. I'd probably take the opportunity too. If anyone finds themselves in a scenario like this, best advice (assuming you're trying to make friends) is to just sit a short distance away from em, don't corner them, try to be low to the ground, make gentle noises, take it real slow, let them come to you. They will usually try to slip away - just let em. If they come _back,_ you might be on the first step for an animal buddy.
@EccentricSage There’s some problems with what you’re saying. Firstly, animals that befriend humans that are not domesticated will naturally become less afraid of other humans. There are obviously cases in which this doesn’t happen and they only aren’t wary around one specific person, but it isn’t common. Secondly, associations do not need to be with many different people. Food definitely helps and contributes to a lot of the more problematic behavior we see. One person bonding with a wild animal creates a pattern of expectation that the animal then attributes to other human beings. This means that an animal that is friendly with a human is more likely to go up to another human because there is an expectation there. I’m sure you can see why this is unwanted. In the case of food, the expectation is that the animal will be given food if they approach a human and when this does not happen, they attack the human. Both results are unsafe for the animal. We should never interfere with wildlife in this way. You’re right in that tendencies vary per species, but they don’t vary an incredible amount.
@@RisqueBisquet If people are going to do it anyway, I hope at the very least they feel shameful afterwards and learn going forward that they are actively being harmful by engaging in this behavior.
@John Stonik their average body temperature is around 82•F much to cold for the virus to survive. The chance of opossums getting rabies is almost impossible less than 1%.
@John Stonik the aggression isn't necessary, John..And Sean, only strict carnivores can get rabies, and the only way a possum could get it, was if he was bitten or ate something that was affected. it is very rare, but it is possible.
These guys are constantly having panic attacks at every single second of their existence. It's either "MAXIMUM PANIC" or "smol panic" with them. Even when they scream and hiss all scary like, they're still panicking on the inside.
Sooo..... I just petted a small wild opossum tonight and even got to pick it up... and I'm just so happy at this moment 😊 ... Now I'm just watching opossum videos .... I love them 😍😍😍
Lol no it didn't bite or even growl it just sat there in my hands 😆 days later I petted a skunk that was crazier. Took a few weeks to earn it's trust and it didn't attack or spray me either ... I love animals 😆
It's always great to see when someone understands the fact that possums are not known to be dangerous and how they don't deserve the bad reputation they get however I don't recommend an interaction like this without experience with these animals and some type of protection on your hands like a leather glove.
@@AlexDenton0451 The ones who care are the ones who have genuine pride of intelligence. They have really poor eyesight; it probably isn't sure what is going on or where to go. If it felt threatened, it would be hissing and growling or playing dead.
Wren Funkhauser you see those teeth and the snarled lip of the oppossum? That’s a natural defensive posturing. Opossums almost never bite or defend themselves, they use other tactics to avoid predators. Here the oppossum is definitely weary and scared of what it sees as a potential threat. It shows the teeth to warm that threat to back off, even if it ultimately won’t follow up on that display. I love these animals and really all wild animals (cept for mosquitoes, they can go fuck themselves lol) but it’s generally best that we leave them alone and appreciate them at an appropriate distance.
I keep looking at his lips and he looks like he's trying to remain fearsome for self protection but can't help relaxing and enjoying the petting and you can see his lips losing the tough guy snarl. Lol. Possums are very shy. Many people think they are so fearsome and rough because of how wide their mouth is but they are very shy and docile. I discovered I had a big possum living outside my huge shrub and one night I was taking the garbage out and I saw 2 little white faces with the most cutest black pearly eyes staring at me. Turns out mama had babies and a few days later I saw there were actually 4 babies!!! Two on each side of the shrub , clinging on branches and staring at me. Lol they were adorable. I leave cat food and bits of fruit and kitchen scraps for them. They clean it up perfectly every morning.
Once you feed him, things will change in a hurry. I feed mine fig beetles and grasshoppers, he loves them. I just collect those garden pests everyday and leave them in a little plastic cage with the lid sitting over the top, but not snapped on, that way he can knock it over and clean those critters out. You can hear a whole lot of crunching shortly after the cage falls over.
How nice, he is more than a little scary but I feed them from my home in PA, God bless all the animals and humans during this busy horrible stressful time, I am a 60 yr. old single guy who has rescued 11 cats in my life and tend to the outsider like this and Many Others!! And I Love helping All Animal & Human!! Take care all and be safe!!
That possum looks like it is trying real hard to put it's angry face on, but i've heard that possums raised in captivity or that have lived with humans long enough become real affectionate. Like really really affectionate, they will lick you and cover you in possum spit trying to 'clean' you. You probably can find videos of possums that live in people's houses on RU-vid, tbh i'd probably bet on it, RU-vid has videos of everything animal related. Also yeah most humans don't like being stroked on the head haha, if you stroke my mam on the head she doesn't like it (if i'm sat with my mam playing with and stroking her cats i'll pretty much always stroke her on the head and say 'aww, you want a fish stick too? or a chinny tickle?' which makes her laugh even though she doesn't like her hair touched) but my girlfriend will lie on my lap and get her head stroked and her hair brushed for hours, which i think is really cute.
This video definitely put a smile on my face. I have always heard you can tame a wild possum in 10 minutes but never had the opportunity (i.e; Guts) to try it. Well done.
I don’t think wolves are comparable to a possum in this situation, possums don’t usually defend themselves like other animals do, they usually just play dead or stand still, but wolves are territorial, and will fuck you up if you mess with them
I thought this was really cute at first but something felt off. I looked it up and this is textbook ‘playing dead’ behavior. He’s scared out of his mind and it can take a bit for them to get going again once perceived danger has moved on. I hope he’s doing okay 💕
You absolutely cannot own them without first knowing that they have a 3-5 year lifespan in captivity. It's a heartbreaking fact, especially because of how much good they do for the environment around them, and how much false information people assume is true about them. Opossums should be cherished, they really should
Gia D They love playing the bluff game. A smaller animal will ALWAYS fear you. They just show their teeth as a self defense mechanism. Animals know that if they run they look like easy prey. The only preys that run are fast and that’s the only reason they do it. But when handling an opossum make sure you swoop down and get to its level. When standing up completely you only look like a potential threat. An animal will recognize if you crouch that you’re not using your size as an advantage, And so they read it as a possible friendly encounter. And never give in to their bluff, pet it. It will never show its teeth at you again and will see you as a friend. It’s a mutual exchange of respect through energy. People need to realize that animals work with energy since they don’t have intelligence or a conscious. They see any sudden movements and it terrifies them, even when reaching to pet it be super slow at first until it begins to trust you. And by the way they really enjoy back rubs and being pet at the top of their head. But don’t half ass it, commit to petting it, don’t be scared. When you lightly pet a wild animal it becomes cautious as it has no idea what you’re doing. But when you really go hands on and pet it like you would pet a dog, It will know exactly what you’re doing and will recognize the affection.
j How about “They don’t have a human-like intellect or a human-like conscious” Which is what I meant. Is that better bud? (Edit) I’m pretty sure the average person knows what I mean. No offense, but that was one of those “Actually” comments people hate.
Being a wild Opossum that was more then likely the first time it's felt that type of sensation since it was a baby. You could tell that it enjoyed being petted as such, but yet wary at the same time. Every mammal loves being petted except for the occasional exception.
The opossum is just like "WHAT IS THIS" "I AM DEEPLY UNCOMFORTABLE" "THIS IS NEW AND SCARY" "WHY IS THIS HAPPENING" "NONONO WHAT IS THI" "HOW DID THIS HAPPEN" "REEEEEEEEEEEE"
Looks like it can't decide weather or not it's cool with being petted, like as if it's stuck debating weather or not to bite, 50% cool with it while 50% uncool with it. A very complicated stalemate lol
Helix The Cunt a study shows pretty much all mammals including us like to pet in some way as it stimulates nerves in certain way to release the feel good chemicals
That looks exactly like my possum Jupiter who I recently brought the Project Wildlife so he could get ready to re-enter the wild. I love possums. They’re incredible animals.
Hes cute, and they're helpful critters. Opossums eat ticks and other bugs. I never petted an opossum bur did pet a moma skunk and her babies, they didnt stink me either.
They’re kinda rough. Because they don’t get showered. But they’re actually not aggressive at all. Even when they open their mouth they aren’t aggressive. Most of the time. Unless their homie got ran over or splattered by humans. In that case they might just be upset. Unless it was their cheating wife that got ran over.
Love opossums so much. Glad people are getting progressively less freaked out by them as more and more videos of the fall into their recommended section.
Imagine aliens coming to earth and start petting the humans. I bet we wouldn't like that. So I really don't get when people start petting wild animals..
@Samantha how would you communicate with an intelligent being though? yeah and you'd be living off the aliens trash like a racoon, what if they domesticate your mommy and daddy too. No option other than to kiss their feet in submission. The last thing an alien would want is to be friends with a destructive species like us, we would be a natural threat to them if they require planetary resources.
@@indrajithak47 how you know the aliens are not destructive that fucked up there own planet i doubt humans will play dead we have guns of destruction we wont go without a fight
It's incredibly rare for opossums to contract rabies as their body temperature is too low for the virus to survive. A lone possum can eat 5,000 ticks a year, helping reduce the risk of lyme disease in people. They are really great animals that just get a bad rap because they're scary lookin.
