Peugeot 208 Active 1 litre review 2012 - 2019 (facelift)

This first generation Peugeot 208 was on sale between 2012 - 2019 and proved to be popular in the UK. The car comes with a surprising amount of kit given it's low trim level and has a roomy interior when you consider its external dimensions. Watch the video to find out what's included and what it's like to drive.

Love these “normal” car reviews, I’d love to see this compared to another super mini like the Mazda 2. I think a common fault with these 208s are the exhaust, especially the mounts/clamps

Nice to see an intelligent and courteous driver on the road. Can't quite come to grips with this talk of the steering wheel being too small/fidgety from so many? To each his own I guess, oh! hers too. Personally, I find the wheel to be a great feature, LOVE IT! I'm 5ft/6 and have absolutely no problem whatsoever clearly viewing the dash sitting comfortably. Just needed to adjust the height of the chair slightly, nothing more. If a particularly small person, GOD BLESS!!! to rectify simply make the necessary adjustments, Chair/steering column is all there at your disposal and convenience. I own a Peugeot 1.2 Purtech 82 edition 2019 and think they really are good cars. however, all said and done it's an individual thing when deciding which car is right for you. "Of course it is." Nice video!

Quite a popular driving school car these. Several ADIs and PDIs around me use them. Slightly quirky, which some new drivers may struggle with, but the visability and ease of driving must claw it back for these cars.
@RichardFanders
@RichardFanders 2 года назад
I think it's a fairly difficult car to drive, the clutch is too high.
@seberous
@seberous 2 года назад
@@RichardFanders my Renault is the same! Throws me off occasionally. I believe I have found why. The clutch fork that the cable connects to doesn't retract any further back after the clutch is fully engaged, meaning the end of the clutch cable travel is the 'full engagement' point. The clutch is self adjusting, so obviously adjusts the end of the clutch fork's movement to the top of the pedal, which is where the full engagement point is, leaving to a high bite. Some say after changing their clutch this changed , probably due to a slightly different release bearing / clutch fork setup. Maybe this 208 is similar, although I doubt it has a cable clutch. I might try to modify mine to retract the clutch fork back further than it goes currently. I suppose if you learn in a car with a very high bite it could cause issues when you buy a car of your own 🤔.

Owned one of these for around twelve months - although it's the pre-facelift (64 plate Allure) and it's the 1.6 diesel. Horror stories galore about the wet timing belt in the petrol versions and I wouldn't touch a Puretech engine with a bargepole - but the diesel engine is great. I agree with a lot of what you've said - it's a comfortable car. I do a lot of motorway driving in mine and it eats up the miles. I've never really understood why people complain about not being able to see the dials - I'm around 6ft and no matter whether I move the wheel up or down I can still see everything. One thing I don't agree with what you've said is the gearbox. You said it was fairly decent - in my opinion it is crap. Very vague, noisy (seems to clunk a little going from 2nd to 3rd) and you need to rev it quite high - e.g. in other cars I've driven the car is quite happy accelerating from around 18mph in third - not so for the 208, you get massive vibration until the car gets to around 25mph. This is a brand new gearbox replaced by Peugeot under warranty (testament to how rubbish the gearbox is as it had failed after 50k) and honestly I've driven vans with nicer gearboxes. I partially agree with you on the interior - I actually think it's quite nice inside but by God does it rattle - the door handles, the glovebox, even the trim around the dials all rattle at certain rev ranges - there's a point at about 1500rpm where they all rattle at once and it drives me nuts. Other than that though it's a great looking little car that is cheap to insure and fill up - the HDi diesel engines tend to go on for longer than you might think as well (see plenty of examples for sale where they've done in excess of 120k - 130k.)

Cruise control stalk... while hidden, is frankly the easiest system I have used. As it's on a stalk, it's in the same place ALL the time, the buttons are large so easy to press the right one. Whereas other cars have it on the steering wheel itself where it's harder to press the correct button.

I bought a used 2014 model allure trim. It came already with the face lift visual changes. It has a 1.6 e hdi engine with 115hp and let me tell you, it's one of my favourite cars! It's a lil pocket rocket in the city and it has a 6 speed for the highway. If you are economical you can go has low has 4.0/4.1 l/100km and if you like to press the accelerator it responds really well. The sound of the engine is nothing special below 2000rpm, just quiet, but after that I never knew a diesel could sound so good. It revs with no problem to 4000rpm, it asked you to do it hehehe. It corners really well, the small steering wheel makes it really responsive. I wouldn't say the steering feedback is good, you don't feel basically anything but that quick response really makes it fun to corner. At the end of the day it's a wonderful lil car, 115hp is more than enough for what it is and because it is a diesel, it has really fuel efficient. The 6 speed gearbox and the low torque make it a beauty to drive in any circumstance. You can shift at 1500rpm and it has more than enough torque to go with it. The only bad thing until now is the hard ride. Maybe because I have the 17inch wheels but it's not the most comfortable car in bad roads. On the highway or in good roads no complaints, it absorbs the low bumps of the road really well, but when the road is really bad you will notice it. In general a really good sporty all arounder for daily use!!
@RichardFanders

That is a particularly good diesel engine. Known as the DLD and is used in many cars including Volvo and BMW.

Thanks for the Review! I bought a 14 Plate and its great. Did some background on it and it was sat for almost 2 years in a Garage because of the Lockdowns and slow trade. The dealer had to do some work on it for its MOT and the tyres where all replaced. Seems they ran it every so often to stop it seizing up. in 2 years it did less than 400 miles lol. Anyway I don't mind the small wheel and you get used to the engine noise after a while. I did start to develop a knock going over uneven road so I will get that checked, MOT has no Advisories.

BTW it is Critical if you are thinking about buying a 208... make sure its had its cambelt changed. Peugeot did a recall on the 1.2 VTi engines beause the belts where perishing. I have no Idea if they are still offering to do it but it affects older ones.

I wish to see him doing that. I have a 3 door 2009 Vauxhall Corsa Active 1.0 Petrol 3 cylinders. For the price they go, I really can't recommend it enough. It doesn't have many of the features of a modern car but it helps you. No hill assist but you can put it in gear 1 and clutch to the bite point, it's gonna work with very little struggle. Same for the reverse gear. The only "complain" I have is the clutch bite point is very high. 😐 It took me a long time to get used to it and even now I'm messing up some times. It's so high that if you lift it any higher, you're gonna release the pedal and it's gonna jerk you forwards.

I'd avoid the petrol 208s. They have a wet timing belt. This means the rubber timing belt is immersed in the engine oil. This degrades the belt over time, causing it to crack badly. If bad enough, chunks of rubber can break off the belt & block up oil channels. The problem is exasperated by the extremely long replacement interval for the timing belt. Change the belt well before the interval!
@rubenbraekman4515
@rubenbraekman4515 Год назад
