Peugeot 308 'Risk of Filter Blocking'

The warning 'risk of filter blocking' comes up for 2 reasons.
1/ The car has not carried out a regen because of short journeys. (Drive car for 20 min)
2/ The dpf is at the end of its life (high milage cars) get a new dpf for £116.
The glow plugs help the regen and they do fail.
For a DPF guide, click on 'end screen' card at end of video
I have a bleeper and LED connected to my car.
When the automatic regen starts, it also turns on the heated mirrors and heated rear screen.
Many times I have nearly got home and the bleeper sounds 4 times and my LED starts blinking.
For that reason, I drive for another 8 minutes, minimum, and wait for the LED to go off. (Usually 8 minutes to complete a regen)
Because Peugeot didn't fit a warning light, we have no way of knowing if we have stopped the engine in the middle of a regen.
If you make short journeys for less than 10 to 15 minutes, the regen will never happen.
That is why I fitted my system.
Drive the car until the engine is hot.
Drive for 15 minutes, once the engine is hot.
That should ensure the 8 minutes is given for the regen.
A regen will work at any speed and will even start at idle in town traffic.
A faster drive is better since the burnt soot is being forced out faster with the increased engine revs.

For those that don't know peugeot and citroen, everytime the fuel cap Is open it injects dpf fluid, so if you fill your tank full your dpf fluid will last longer, if you keep putting £10 everytime your dpf fluid won't last the 100000 to 115000 miles

With a faulty glow plug, it will still regenerate but not properly so error will continue to appear, we always recommend all 4 glow plugs are replace, because 1 has failed the others will soon follow

Yes I imagine the gasses in one cylinder will not be as hot as the other 3 with working glow plugs. My garage said they can snap when removing them, is it common for them to break?

I had the same issue. All I did was: I went on a roadway and drove on 3000rpm for like 10minutes and the filters cleaned themselves ✅. This sometimes happens if you drive your Diesel car only or for a long time in the city on low “RPM”

In my case, when I got this particular "warning message", the case was that the additive pump was broken and hence the car failed to regenerate the DPF.

I would say the warning message is being generated by the ecu monitoring the dpf pressure sensor. The reason the glow plug fault code has not come back since cleared at the dealer is the engine is warm and glow plugs have not been required and not been activated. The code will come back when the engine is cold and glow plugs are required to start or the drive cycle calls for a dpf regeneration and the ecu then sees the glow plugs are faulty. Has the glow plug fault been repaired? Otherwise the fault will return.

Thank you Steve for your comments. The message was being shown due to the age / milage of the car. I bypassed the faulty glow plug in the glow plug relay.

Thanks for your reply bypassing the faulty glow plug will only fool the ecu to thinking it is working. The result in doing so will not increase cylinder temperature during a regeneration phase and will not carry out an efficient regeneration.

Thank you for the discussion. As well as my daughter's Peugeot, I have just bought a Vauxhall Zafira 1.9 Cdti. The previous owner spent £1500 at the Vauxhall dealer having the DPF replaced. They also spent a lot of money on ERG valves. It has done 140,000 miles. As soon as a took it to the Polish mechanic, he said the Glow Plugs need to be replaced - laborious starting. Glow Plugs from the main dealer are £135. Four Bosch glow plugs from eBay £35. I bought the glow plugs - hopefully, the right ones. The Polish mechanic then said that it is a two-hour job to replace them. I get the sense that he is reluctant to do it on a knackered old diesel. Presumably, the alternative is just to soldier on or sell the car.

Point 1. from my experience having had several of these cars is not to buy the 1.6 HDi, from any car maker. Peugeot, Citroen, Ford and volvo which run the DV6 engines. The 2.0l engine, DW10 is the best with less issues. Please don't mention adblue, as these cars have noting to do with that. The FAP uses Eolys fluid and there are different types. Point 2. Stay away from the 1.6 HDi.. Point 3. If you have a car with this engine get rid of it or really look after it well. More frequent oil changes, lots of highway running etc...

Not to buy a 1.6 HDi? Why? The drive perfectly to 125000 miles or more! How much is the tax on your 2.0 lt? Who said adblue goes in these older car?

@@JohnB-2021 You just mentioned adblue that's all, can confuse some people. As for tax, no tax here. Cars are registered by number of cylinders plus insurance. So all 4 cyl cars are the same.. These engines have higher failure rates, probably due to people just driving and not doing maintenance. But, with a lot of experience I can say that I would never touch one again. I have a 207 with the engine bay in pieces right now...

@@JohnB-2021 omg. I'm not complaining about Peugeot. I'm just saying that the DV6 engine will have more issues than the other ones. The 2.2l V6 diesel is another one to stay away from. Longevity wise that are just not there for the average person and will be a money trap not than the other engines. That's all I'm saying.

Some error codes or messages are hold in the cache until the system totally shuts down (2-3 hours after leaving the car). I have had some time before a "Engine break warning" (Wet condition, heavy fog situation for days. I think some sensors gone wet and giving wrong signals) after driving some kilometers and shut down the car for some hours the message was gone (but not before). Also if the additiv (Eloys for FAB Systems) is replaced a counter (and I think a message flag) must be reseted to get rid of the "Additive low" Message (could be that this is also the reason for this message still available.

Hi DSP16569, Thank you for your comments. The Eloys fluid was full, 1.6 litres. The message was due to the high milage of the car, now gone, see part 2.

had a similar issue with 07 plate 307 changed the fuel filter and everything cleared didn't have anymore problems

I drove my Peugeot 308 on highway because I had this error. But the speed was limited at 110km/h all the trip, for around 70km. On the highway, beside the filter clocking error, I saw also engine fault error When I came back home, the engine sounded like a vaccum cleaner. I stopped the engine and for another 5 minutes with the engine stopped the sound was still. What should I do? Do you think my clogged dpf affected my turbo and my engine too? I have 2012 Peugeot 308 1.6 HDI 92Hp

What was the error? 30 mph is all you need to do for a regeneration and it lasts less than 10 minutes once the exhaust is hot.

Peugeots and citroens use add blue since 2014 and blue hdi 1.6 and 2.0 hdi. Even newer 1.6hdi (one with euro 5 spec and 8 valves 2009-2014) use only fuell additive with tank under a car no ad blue reservoar...

@@JohnB-2021 i know about trucks and wans. Audi started using ad blue in q7 before 2010 .Only saying for peugetos and citroens. Those blue hdi engines have ad blue tank and fuel additive tank under car. Ad blue kills rest of nox after dpf.

So the reader you have there says DPF is 5.5% full and Peugeot computer says it's 65% full? Anyway it's good to know the filter seems to last to around 200K on these because I was thinking of buying a 100K 207.

My DPF was 5.5% full at time of test. The 65% value is the life used on the DPF.

Thank you for your comments Simon. The Peugeot dealer gave me wrong info. The 'risk of filter blocking' comes up for one of 2 reasons. 1/ The car could not carry out a regeneration because the journeys were too short. (try driving car for 20 minutes) 2/ The dpf is has high milage and at the end of its life, time for a new dpf £116 I had a new dpf fitted, it failed within 2 years and had another fitted. (see end card in above video) 4 new glow plugs fitted last year. New turbo last week Feb 2021. Again see card at end of video, don't buy a one piece cat & dpf.

@@JohnB-2021 hi john thanks for getting back, I've a peugeot 207 1.4 hdi 2011 with 86,000 miles on it and it's doing the very excact same thing, I've had the car on diagbox and got certain codes, topped up elroys fluid, reset the counters, even told the car its had a new dpf fitted, the car is doing a regen ever 300km or so, I've even fitted an led light in the drivers side mirror so i know when that's happening. (As no warning lights fitted by peugeot you just notice the rear screen clear when the cars doing a rejen) P1490 is my main code i keep getting back sometimes I get the turbo boost ones too. I clear the codes and it may reappear the next day or nothing at all for a month, then ping it comes up again, Car drives fine and I've no idea why it keeps returning, my soot level is about 14% in the dpf so plenty of life in it still. I'm just baffled lol Many thanks simon

@@gone-in-sixty-seconds8617 HI Simon, If you have reset the dpf / told the ECU it has a new dpf then the only reason for ‘risk of filter blocking’ is the car has not regenerated or not completed a regen. I have a buzzer with a bright blue led since I don’t always see the led flashing. Rather than checking the soot levels, check the pressure. If you’re getting readings over 120 mBar when you accelerate hard, your dpf is loaded with too much soot. A high pressure reading usually invokes a regeneration. If your pressure levels are good and you get a turbo under-boost, it may well be the turbo is sticking with soot but that is not related to the dpf. I replaced my turbo last week after having an intermittent under-boost all the time I have owned the car. Check my Turbo diagnosis video from last week and DPF repair guide from 8 months ago

That fault will only reappear on a cold start in low temperatures or next attempt at regeneration

FAP temperature sensor failure mate. Should show exact temp. Propably catalytic converter smashed one. No glow plugs needed for regeneration in 1.6 hdi.

Just remove dpf...problem solved. My kuga TDCi had the dpf replaced 3 times by dealers. When the engine light came on again, I said screw it and took the dpf out and blocked the Egr....25k km later and just smiles. The engine is a peach without a dpf.

Or....remove DPF, position a 4ft scaffold tube centrally against the filter material whilst holding both upright , smash the bottom of the scaffold tube on ground until the filter is "speared" all the way through, remove scaffold tube from DPF and re- fit "modified" DPF to vehicle, problem solved, forever.

Is it possible to clear the dpf while revving and not moving? I ask as the warning triangle ⚠️ came on today to say risk of dpf clogging. As the engine was warm enough I simply revved while I was in traffic and the warning light went. Did I fix it?

It sounds like it did fix it. It does regen in slow traffic but may regen again soon after.

what year is your 308 ? mine i 2012 and it has diagnostic inside " radio menu" you don't ned obd for basic info about dpf. scondly mine has tank for the liquid not for add blue ( maybe they installed add blue after 2014, peug 508 has got add blue)

The car will carry out a regeneration at anything at or above 30 mph. If you get a message when starting the car, it means it has not been able to complete a regen at least 3 times. A regen takes about 8 minutes. If you know your car, the temp gauge will be slightly higher than normal and the engine will not be as smooth. You could drive for 200 miles without a regen. Or you could get home after a 200 miles journey and the car may start a regen just as you switch off. The clue is slightly higher temp and engine not as smooth.

@@JohnB-2021 I don't have any warning messages at all just trying to make sure I avoid problems. I mostly do city miles and my mechanic told me to go on the motorway every two weeks. Some things online say every 300 miles which will take me nearly 2 months to accumulate. And everyone has a different opinion on how many revs and for how long. I regret buying a diesel. @@JohnBobbit I posted much on the Peugeot forum with evidence from a scan tool. It takes about 10 minutes for your exhaust to heat up. If your exhaust pressure was building, the car would carry out a regeneration assuming the exhaust was hot. It works fine driving at 30 odd miles per hour in traffic. You could take car on motorway and nothing would happen since you don’t know if the car had regenerated the day before. My car, now sold, came from Nottingham city and the average distance between regens was 75 miles. This became 300 km when I did lots of motorway driving. The only time a car can not carry out a regen is with many short 10 minute journeys or a car at idle for 15 minutes. 20 to 30 mph is all that’s required.

Hi John can you please advise ...my Peugeot 308 1.6hdi 2010 74k miles on clock has had this risk of filter blocking message coming on for the last 6 months since i bought it..The message would only come on now and then not at the startup but during journeys to my university. Yesterday i noticed it that its lost power and the error message doesn't come on any more...Would a DPF regen for £69 fix it or should I go to cars 2 ltd Barnsley for a ecu reset or should i just buy a dpf ..I live in wakefield . how long will this car last n this state? any advise appreciated thank you for your time.

Hi, Cars2u are now Renault. You must have done a long journey, more than 10 minutes and the dpf has had a regeneration. If you have lack of power and no warning light, it could be a turbo problem assuming you are getting no error messages. You could always pop over Brierley and I'll put the pc on it. (for a small donation) or buy a diagnostic tool.

Why are u folks shifting at 2000 rpms ffs my dad drives like he stole it no dpf isuses or any engine isue 270.000 km just sometimes floor it at 3500-4000 rpms and u will be fine...

@ferkemall The issue was the warning message and the scan tool showed normal pressure. I got peugeot to tell the computer it had a new dpf and the warning went away.

I had successfully done dpf regain some 2000 km ago.. warning blinked in the middle of driveling on highway and did 4th gear at 3000rpm for 15m.. during that drive warning message aspired 3-4 times.. and stoped But now i did NOT menage to do dpf regain, i did drive 15m 3000rpm but still when i star the car warning message comes on and curiously IT DID NOT blink again while i am driving.. only when i start the car and that check engine is there of-course.. So i will try once more to go on road in 3th gear above 3000rpm Did you try to fill in tank dpf cleaner and then try this driving?

@@JohnB-2021 will watch now part 2.. Thats what i am afraid that my dpf is finished.. because when i start the car i had that warning appear and it will not alarm me anymore while driving… If dpf is finished profesional cleaning wont solve problem? Only new dpf?

My car loses power when driving, the other day I was driving on an A road doing 60mph and the car began losing power I pulled over and it switched off completely. The engine warning light came on and the anti-pollution sign came on. Tried starting it for 10mins didn’t work after 30mins of starting it worked then I drove back home. Does anyone know what I should do?

Yes, the additive for the DPF filter is low, that is in a tank under the car. It costs about £25 for the fluid plus someone to change it. The Filter Blocking message is answered in part 2.

Hi, The fluid is sold in bags on ebay etc, but I would only recommend Peugeot. Give them a call and see how much it costs. The fluid lasts many tens of thousands of miles, I think my car has had one bag and my car is up at 136'000 miles. Every time you fill up with diesel, a small amount of fluid is injected into the tank. If you watched the whole video, I show the tank and bag etc.

Thank you Charitha, you're welcome . The big question for me is, do I get a replacement DPF from Peugeot at the cost of £400 approx or buy a cheap one from a motor factors at less than £200. That DPF will last over 100'000 miles so it needs to be good quality. It would cost many thousands £s to get a newer diesel with low milage. I have just saved £100 because I have just taxed the car again for £30, my previous Peugeot was £130 or more. So I saved £100 this month and £100 last year. So having to pay between £200 and £400 for a new DPF that will last 100'000 miles is not a huge issue because of the low emissions and low tax.

A fuel filter does not cause a DPF warning. If your fuel filter was blocked, your car would lack power when driving.

@@PhilDaFool My old 307 had a very old fuel filter, it caused no end of driving problems. I figured I would take a look at the filter, it was clogged and very dirty.

I did city driving for nearly 2 months for like and it was around 580 miles and it was giving me around 60 to 65 mpg. Now all of a sudden with no change of my driving style the mpg has gone to f from 57 to 40-45. Any suggestions on why it might have gone down that bad

Hi, Since you mentioned ‘city driving’ I assume you were driving faster and maybe for longer out of the city. That means the dfp would have not been regenerating too often. The dpf will regenerate in as little as every 75 kilometres in city driving compared to every 300 + kilometres out of the city. The dpf regen consumes lots of extra fuel. This is my only thought.

@@JohnB-2021 thanks for you response.. I was driving around 30 mph start and stop and sometimes 40 mph for less then 5 mins. I’ll say I wasn’t driving for long journey, for around 15-17 miles for around 1 hour cause of the traffic start and stop. By any chance my Peugeot 308 2014 1.6 hdi DPF might need a flush or regeneration. Your opinion on this will be very helpful

@@brandanfernandes7127 The problem is the short journey, your car is probably fine and working 100% It regenerates when it needs to. 75 km regen is every 46 miles.

@@brandanfernandes7127 "So 40 to 45 is normal for diesel?" Normal for a 308 1.6HDi My car regenerated twice in one 100 mile journey, it shocked me, half the journey was city driving. I fitted a buzzer to the heated mirrors, years ago, because during a regen the mirrors and heated rear window come on. Another way one can tell if the car is regenerating is when the temperature gauge rises to more than usual. The car will not drive as smoothly when a regen is active. My fuel ‘remaining’ drops during or after a regen too, 20 odd miles or more is lost. The 308 is not a great city car. However my 2009 was clean enough to drive into Paris before the lock down. See ‘clean air certificate’ applications. Where in the world are you?

Drive the car for more than 15 minutes. If the car drives fine and your car has high mileage, it is time to replace the dpf £100 new.

@@markthompson1134 No the glow plug error will make zero difference to the error. It sounds like you need a new dpf then reset the engine ecu.
