Peugeot 508 v Mazda 6 v Insignia Grand Sport - which is the best large family car? 

Matts biggest problems with cars -scratchy materials -load lips -fake exhausts/aerodynamics -manual rear folding seats

I have to say, Peugeot have done bloody great to even put me in a decision to chose between the Mazda 6 or The 508 itself..

The design of 508 and the look of the back in particular looks extraordinary good. Well done Peugeot.

I just saw today the new Peugeot on the street and it looks awesome!

I just picked up the Opel Insignia Elite 2.0 Turbo - 170 hp. Beautiful and at 130Km (80+ mph) on a french motorway over 500km's the car returned 6.6/100 litres or 42.80 miles per gallon. I purchased based on my head - now it's also won my heart :)

I own the Insignia. Does everything I want and expect it to do.

I had Mazda 6 Mps 2008 and its the best car i have ever had so i go for Mazda😋

What I find interesting is that Peugeot now owns Vauxhall. But I own the North American version of this Mazda with the turbo. Very nice car for money. Best balance of sport, practicality, looks and reliability. Mazda has really been stepping up their game. The new 3 look unbelieveable.

That 508 has the coolest Interior of any sedan!

Very happy with my insignia country tourer 2.0t. I have all options except sunroof. Very good comfort and im most impressed by the adaptive chassi. Very comfy when you want but can also be stiff and you dont feel the size of the car at all.

Love the way the Mazda looks the best and would be willing to bet that it's reliability is better than the other two as well.

Visually the Insignia was always going to be on the back foot with it being supplied for the test in White, which any of these cars would tend to look a little featureless. Give it a similar metallic colour to the others and it's appearance wouldn't be as cool as the Peugeot but would certainly bring it more up to par. Good value family hatchback.

Still think the Mazda would be the best long term purchase, as in the other two will start falling to bits long before the Mazda, as well as far less depreciation.

Funny Thing is when the Insignia was first released, i saw one outside a pub and thought it was an Alfa Romeo Giulia for some reason

Which one has the best petrol engine out of the mazda 2.0 skyactiv G or the vauxhall 1.5 Turbo. I currently have a 2.2 Accord I-dtec but looking to get rid of it next year for either the vauxhall or the mazda. I'd like to go back to a petrol engine but out of the 2 which one is best for reliability/drivability?

The Vauxhall Insignia has better colours than that unattractive white paint in the video. The Lava Red for example is, in my opinion, the best looking Insignia colour of them all. And it only costs an extra £285 (same as that white). The Insignia will look even much better if you go for the VX Line spec and then add the optional £1,295 IntelliLux LED Matrix headlights. It's just a shame that in this video, a low spec Insignia was compared to high spec opponents. Both the Mazda 6 and Peugeot 508 featured in this video are the ranging topping models while the Insignia is not. It still won the comparison nonetheless. It deserved it, because the Insignia is a very good car.

The Insignia 2 is so good, it is often compared to much more expensive Audis in German magazines.

Mat is like Agatha Christie with a final verdict falling on the suspect that is least to be expected from the story before.

Peugeot 508 is perfect! Would be my choice

I drive a Grandsport 1.5 165bhp petrol and love it. It does everything well and I got it at a bargain price. Would recommend...

The Insignia is a fantastic car, I have a 2020 1.5D and it's comfy, practical and fast enough. However I have no clue how Matt managed to get only 32 MPG from this model, I've averaged 55MPG over the last 2500 miles and on a motorway run at a steady cruise controlled 70 mph it always returns 65 MPG with normal Shell diesel and 72 MPG with Shell Vpower Diesel. Methinks Matt didn't reset the trip after all his hooning around.

Mazda 6 because is beautiful to look at, surely will outlive the other two with less trouble and the engine kicks ass

If that badge on the insignia wasnt Vauxhall people would think otherwise on it. They really have upped their game.

Hired an Aussie Commodore recently, basically an Insignia. It was excellent. Turbo and rock solid on country roads and dirt. Impressive car.

I have to strongly disagree with Matt's recommendation to get the Mazda with a 180hp diesel. NO! If you want a diesel you get the Peugeot, or just one of the VW family. Mazda is for the 2.0 naturally aspirated old-school car with a manual, or the 2.5 with an automatic . Also I knew several people with both these engines - the petrol owners were way happier than the diesel.

I love that they still make cars like that, especially the 508. I feel like everything nowadays is hatchback or SUV, and me I always loved these kind of "dad cars"

I actually like the exterior design of the Vauxhall/Opel. It sort of reminds me of a Mercedes. But the Mazda definitely has the best interior. With the practicality of the Insignia I'd love to mix them both.

I would choose the Vauxhall as well, I test drove one and it's very nice to drive and very spacious

I recently visited the UK and with the fuel prices there my brain would pick the Mazda 6 because of fuel economy alone, also happens to be the better looking for me, and as said in the video if you need to carry a lot of stuff just get the wagon (which looks awesome) and the new models do have Android auto and Apple carplay.

Insignia sports tourer estate in the dark green looks genuinely lovely. In saloon and white it looks gash.

I choose the 508 for the inside and outside, the design is perfect for me ! But the opel and mazda are good too! Ps: you can have real hood in the 508, unfortunately you don't have it in this one :(

We have the Insignia rebadged as a Holden Commodore in Australia with a V6. The other cars look appealing. A very difficult decision to make. Thanks for your excellent review.

Mazda for me. Love it heaps though the Insignia (which is sold as a Commodore/Calais here in Australia) is a nice car with a good balance of tech and luxury but due to its name here its very disliked!

Just purchased a 508 First edition, i get it on Saturday, never been blown away by how pretty a car is (apart from supercars etc..) its visually stunning, and to find out its got, self park, night vision, motorway steering lane assist, adaptive cruise control, the thing basically drives itself.

I read recently a test of a german car magazine, about the estate versions of the Insignia and the 508, together with a Renault or something, not surprised to find out the Vauxhall won, same results from the germans

Great selection for a comparison! Underrated brands and sleek designs (even the Vauxhall/Opel looks great in person). If I'd have to choose one, the choice between the Peugeot and the Mazda would be very difficult indeed.

I agree, but I would still get the Peugeot. I would try to get something to cover the shiny bits of the interior to prevent scratches.

I’ve had the range topping Opel Insignia Sports Tourer 2.0 Turbo 4x4 (260hp petrol) now for 1.5 yrs and 27000kms and it’s actually the best car I’ve owned, including 3 Audis (of one S4), one MB, one VW, 2 Jeeps, 3 Hyundais, 1 Fiat, 3 Fords, 1 Chevy, a MINI and 8 Porsches. Actually I chose the Insignia over a Porsche SUV/Panamera. The total package the Insignia delivers is absolutely awesome. Besides the amazing Intellilux matrix lights which is always left at auto high beam, the Webasto heater and the super duper FlexRide chassis, I must say the BOSE noise cancelling system of the passenger compartment is my favorite tech. The mechanical 4x4 system with the active tourqe diff on the rear axel is brilliant driving on Scandinavian winter roads. And the towing capacity of 2.2tonnes makes it a capable hauler also. Brilliant car from Rüsselsheim, before any PSA interference. It’s a keeper!

In Australia, the pommie vauxhall insignia, is a Holden Commodore available in a range of models including the top shelf VXR V6 Quattro. I think that you should drive this variant in this format it packs 235 KW and (9) speed automatic......it goes hard !!!!!!

Insignia with vx line and 20" rims look so much better in real life the any other opponent ! Why not a GSI? Stunning car

8:54 its not that annoying considering the fact that you could just pull the leavers and just push whatever long item you have through as the seats will fold down by themselves

Very simple and balanced review. I love vauxhall but when I saw the Peugeot I said ohhhu my soul that's such a cool car. But after you tested them a bit I was very disappointed :P Was wondering do they still do the eco flex version on the new insignias ? I use to have a 2014 one and was doing anything from 51 to 54mpg, and the 32 you mentioned seemed super low.

I took the Mazda in soul crystal , hands down the best paint, in the evening and in the wet it just shimmers. Got the petrol sport estate, loads of room, awesome stereo, love the heads up, radar cruise and lane assist even though I expected to hate it. Can rev it to red line all you want, not the most powerful with 165 but boy is it enthusiastic, wouldn't be seen dead in any Vauxhall since the astra GTE.
