The opening statement of the narrator demonstrates what many growing fire departments must contend with - educating an uneducated public regarding equipment purchases. "Why do we need such a big truck?" I'm sure is the number one question asked regarding this apparatus. Excellent video showing the versatility of this truck; your community will be well served.

I am curious about the decision to go with tandem axle instead of single. I collect fire trucks and own 2 tillers of my own, they are both single axle, so I can't help but wonder
@SpencerFinlinson

@@mrwonderful2142 that's a great question. that the time we ordered the tiller. the manufacture recommended a tandem axle due to the tiller able to pump off of it

4 stories is more then 30ft. And ladder trucks serve multiple functions and it is very rare that you can pull right up next to the building requiring a longer ladder or for ladder pipe applications that's why ladders are longer then 30ft. I think this truck is an awesome setup

Aerial Devices consist of turn table ladders, ladder platforms, telescopic platforms (Baker Aerialscopes...think FDNY), Platform Aerial (typically articulated like a Snorkel, but no ladder rungs). Telescopic water towers are not meant to climb...just elevate the master stream. Unless you are talking about a TeleSquirt which was an elevated boom master stream with ladder rungs attached to it. Usually limited to 60' max.

I just came across this video even though its been posted for awhile but I'll throw in my two cents worth. First, tractor drawn aerials have been around for well over 100 years. There is nothing new or ground breaking here. Second, not all fire depts. here in the USA have the ability to have more than one truck to bring the equipment that doesn't fit on the first one. What happens when the 2nd truck never arrives? Also many FD's do more than just firefighting so the truck may also be required to carry vehicle rescue tools, technical rescue equipment, haz mat, it all depends upon the FD's responsibilities. Third, the length of the ladder is absolutely necessary. Building construction trends are allowing for larger homes with much larger roof sizes, not to mention the setbacks from the street. Lastly, I don't know where the 3 million dollar figure came from but that is absurd. Tractor drawn aerials are actually much cheaper than some other styles such as a rear or mid mount platform. A new TDA can be purchased in the 6-7 hundred thousand range. Only a straight frame aerial is cheaper. A well equipped TDA quint can push a million but nowhere near 3 million! A bright new truck that is different then anything before it doesn't mean it is more expensive.

I've seen Tiller Trucks before: basically a Ladder Semi Truck with 6 Wheels: 4 on the Tractor and 2 on the Trailer, the Trailer Wheels are Steerable via a Cab on the Back of the Trailer, for Extra Maneuverability, like in Roundabouts in this Community, or Tight Corners in New York. But I have never seen a Tiller Tractor fitted with 4 Driving Wheels, it actually looks Much Cooler than other Tillers I've seen.

While I can't say for certain, my guess is not. Most trucks like this don't have any water onboard and some don't even have pumps, relying on a separate pumper hooked to it to flow the water.

A quint isn't just a ladder truck with a pump. It has 5 things aboard. Guess what those are. A quint without an aerial ladder device is not called "just a engine". It's called a QUAD. They we're once common but rare today. Because a QUAD has a full compliment of ground ladders, pump, water, hose. Your reference to an "engine" is wrong as well. Because an engine is just for pumping...historically. What you meant to say was Triple Combination Pumper. That's what most people call an "engine" these days. And this particular device is not accurately described as "tillered". This truck is best described as a TDQL...Tractor Drawn Quint Ladder, a very rare truck. In the old days many straight trucks with aerial ladders had rear wheel steering via a second driver and a tillered steering wheel. But they were not tractor drawn.
@EnjoyFirefighting

Does this four axle truck have 500ft or more cubic feet of storage and carry up to 135' of ground ladders? Similar technology exist in the U.S. look up Pierce All Steer.
@nol7034
@nol7034 10 лет назад
The work each country requires of their ladder companies is different and in the US more equipment needs to be carried onto the scene to support that work. Except for older sections of some cities the streets generally are wide enough to allow the use of vehicles without all-wheel steering. For the older sections of cities in the US a Tiller Truck is ideal (being assigned to one was the most fun I'd ever had with my clothes on). I sometimes wonder if I'd have worked in the Brandweer had my parents stayed in Arnhem.
@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting 10 лет назад
KMA558 nope, the 4 axle aerial ladder truck carry neither ground ladders nor much equipment, but usually a 170 ft ladder or boom; but even some of the short 100 ft ladder trucks have all-wheel steering

My home town had to buy a ladder truck because the University has ONE BUILDING that requires it's use in an emergency. BUT the University DOES NOT PAY TAXES, and didn't donate one red fucking dime to it's purchase. it is never used and just sits there in the firehouse collecting dust because it's a very sore point when ever it is seen by the locals... but even one building that requires a ladder truck makes its purchase necessary but it would have been nice if the rich University would have donate some moola for it...

Excellent video but if it is really intended for the public, I think you should have explained what is ISO and how does that impact fire insurance rates. I know of a town which lost several budget battles with town council, but when the only ladder went out of service, decertified, the fire insurance increase fired up business owners to force council to repair or replace it. Somehow that was lost in the budget debates.

Why 3 exels on the truck?
@carultch
@carultch 3 года назад
Axles. There are three axles on the truck because that is what is necessary to support the length of the ladder that extends to 100 ft in the air, when collapsed to its transport length. Even when collapsed, it still exceeds the length limit for two axle vehicles to be capable of navigating the bend curvature of streets. It needs to be able to pivot within the vehicle to be able to turn the tighter bends of the street. Unlike standard transport trucks that can get away with primarily driving on the highway and in truck-friendly parking lots that don't require as tight of turning, the hook and ladder needs to travel on ordinary streets..

A tillered quint is a good idea for some departments. Not everyone can function the same and if this is a first out and manning is an issue and as they say they are operating in high density areas, this rig may very well be what they need. All this critical shit on here by people who are not even close to this town is bunk. The tillered quint concept has been chosen long already for the Los Angles County Fire Dept.. LACo FD has about 180 stations and EVERY ladder is a tillered quint. And I can surely understand the thought process there on any number of levels.
