My Phaerix get's Avenge 3, then gets hit himself twice and dies before giving anyone a shield. Or gets the trigger off and just casts it on himself. - really need taunt to make him worthwhile imo.

As someome who worked on matchmakers. Assuming there are much fewer premades than solos, Blizzard have to mix premade duos with solo-duos at least sometimes, to ensure lower queue times. Because in terms of player retention, premade play is surely a banger. And they don't want premade play to be worsened by significantly longer queue times. Now, that doesn't mean this have to be completely unfair. All they need to do is to match premades against solo players of slightly higher MMR, so that voicecom advantage is compensated by skill disadvantage. How much is the right amount of 'slightly' is tricky, and at the very high end of MMR there are none slightly higher, but that's how and why this is usually done.

Duos is too quick. I think they should remove the tier damage when you attack the opponent's life points. It should be based purely on what's still left on the field
