A miniature version of Star Control 2 could have worked. Explore the galaxy, meet friendly and hostile xenos, get into space battles, land on planets to explore them, and find yourself as the only one who can stop the Ur-Quan and their Hierarchy Of er i mean defeat the evil earthmen
