My favourite is Phantasy Star 2. Not my favourite game of all time, but by far the most important game to me. It was the game that got me into gaming, and gave me a world to explore. Heck it was the game to teach me to read, budget and save money. This game is soo important to me
Rewatching this video in 2018. Haven't watched it since back in 2009. What a great video Johnny. I also forgot all about your epic opening to your shows. You should bring that back in some form. I'm glad you're contributing to keeping this series alive.
I never thought Phantasy Star 3 was that bad of a game actually. I remember replaying it so many times. I actually really liked it. I never the played the others for a VERY long time though. Sure, it wasn't Chrono Trigger or FF4 or FF6, but I dunno - it just drew me for some reason. I think my imagination helped.
Yeah there is something magical about the third one, the way the characters looked and the music was spectacular. 1,2, and 4 were good but they had a certain cheeseyness to them. PS3's gameplay wasn't as intricate because sega took away resources to work on the sonic team, so most gamers lament it because it lacked that challenge and depth with techniques and stuff while you are battling monsters. Its too bad there was never a game that combined the pleasing aesthetics of 3 with the depth of the others, and its a real shame the series ended because it started out much better than final fantasy.
30 years old game still ICONIC...a TurnTake game play, insane how people could troll the 3D render wasn't all that, it could've render on your ipad & phones! Not a new game yet paradox into humanity real life history and future from every map on ancient-Earth(p☆1), Mars, Titan ( P☆2) and to a Flat-earther spaceship theory( p☆3) trilogies.
Wow, people didn't like the third one? I had no idea, I've always loved the game and thought of it as in my top 10. I loved the different generations and all that stuff. I never knew it was hated.
Classic video, and I still come back to it, after all these years. Thanks for getting me into Phantasy Star, Johnny! I'd love to see you revisit Phantasy Star 3 someday.
Phantasy Star 1 was one of the greatest games of all time, no friggen lie. I was so glad I got ahold of a sega master system and came across that game. I remember seeing the graphics for it in a Sears catalogue and just had to buy it. Boy was I BLOWN AWAY by how good of a game it was. The graphics were top notch, the story was excellent and those dungeons were so ahead of their time. I was playing Ultima Exodus on the NES around that time, and PS was just as good, if not better in many ways!
Phantasy Star 2 was my first experience with an RPG. Leveling up, buying new weapons, boss battles, everything I've come to know about RPGs started with playing PS2 on the Genesis. Fond, fond memories.
He nailed my feelings exactly about Phantasy Star II. The lack of battle background and 3-D dungeons was a big departure... in a bad way. This screenshot of PSII with 3D dungeon almost bring a tear to my eye. Imagine how amazing this game would have been. First time I see it but it look so right. It look like the original Phantasy Star but on Genesis.
Oh, Phantasy Star IV. Definitely my favorite in the original series! The gameplay is absolutely awesome, and so is the story. And the manga-ish cutscenes just did it for me. Made it so much more engaging. They could display emotions so nicely.
OMG - there you go touching on another series that I hold dearly close to my heart the Phantasy Star series. I remember shelling out $60 bucks for the Sega Master System game in 1988! At the time I thought it couldn't get any better than Legend of Zelda. Everything about the original PS made me a true believer in the SMS. Two years later after the release of Sega Genesis came the PS sequel. I shelled out nearly $80 when it released. But i'll tell ya it was some hard-earned money well spent.
Learning there would be a Hint book packaged with PSII was unheard of at the time! It kinda bothered me for awhile because at times when i'd get stuck i'd be tempted to grab the book and felt like I was a cheater. Eventually I would use it because some parts in the game were just some random puzzle you wouldn't have thought otherwise. Regardless, there would be many sleepless nights on PSII. Probably the most memorable of the series for me ^_^
thanks so much much for this, brought a tear to my eye. Can't remeber how much of my youth was based around all these games. Got all but one ending on 3 and you are right about number 3
I loved 3 myself, I played it many times while in HS, and I loved it so much I taped it to 3 or 4 VHS tapes, so years latter I could watch the story again..I loved the fact that your kids could take over and finish the story not once but twice.
Ram Stones The 16-bit Phantasy Star II actually came out in the US BEFORE Final Fantasy I for the NES. So keep that in mind when you play it. That both the first 2 PS' were YEEEAAARS ahead of the rest of the industry on their release.
Great video. These games flew under the radar for me and i never played any of them, but I have been meaning for some years to give them a try. Perhaps that time is near...
Continued from last post: they even added different special effects for each unique weapon in the game at the time coupled with a SciFi setting with a female lead character and gave the player 3 planets to explore. There was no other game at the time that was able to do all this. And what other game at the time had such awesome vehicle designs! The Ice Digger! Hover craft! LandRover!!!!! Rieko Kodama and her team did an amazing job making this game! PS1 was a technical feat!
Also in my view the enemies were visually well-designed as were the main characters in the "card menu" which was another brilliant idea as representation. I loved the history-like epicness, the civil wars and feuds, the morphing vehicles, many planets, etc. The drama was never boring, dull or cheesy to this 11-year-old. Maybe no other game has produced such deep feelings in me that mixed my own life and the game.
I agree about Phantasy star 3's big revelation, and there was that build up where go you though all those underground technoligical passageways and you're thinking, man, what the hell is up with that world.
Playing Shining the Holy Arc on the Sega Saturn, just recently, brought me back to the feal that I got from playing the first Phantasy Star. It's also a great first person dungeon crawler RPG.
Megaman Zero 4 and FFVI Advance made me a gamer. Zero 4 had this amazing music, it's also what got me into metal music

simply the best... love it...every second...thank you so much for doing such a stupendus review...never give up...we, the fans will always be here for you...
PSIII - MEH! You totally got that right. A different team on a different mission, it was. Though I liked the "generations" premise. PSIV - OMG - it costed me around $100 for theJapan import. Sega America at the time wasn't sure when it was coming to the U.S. so I went grey market. Everything I wanted (except the 3D dungeons missing ) was in this game! The visuals in Mega Drive Fan helped me pretty well since I didn't know how to read Japanese ^_^
I haven't played this series before but you are one of the few who make me want to play it because the story seems quite good. I'm honestly just afraid of the old school grinding. The grinding alone can be a huge turnoff for me.
There are tons of comments on this video, so you may already have been told this, but Phantasy Star IV was originally planned as a Sega CD game and was going to be longer, have CD-quality music (some of which can be found on KHInsider), have better graphics, and have the 3D-style dungeons, but it got scrapped when the Sega CD's sales dropped further and Sega settled with a cartridge version. Still one of my all-time favorites, but it hurts to know what could've been.
@HappyConsoleGamer The thing that always confused me was that the back of the box shows the regular SMS Phantasy Star. I also read a review of the game online years ago and the screenshots had updated graphics. Ever since then I've been confused. Anyway, thanks!
I got Phantasy Star 2 used and it didn't come with the hint book. I mapped out everything manually and it was BRUTAL! Everybody, don't do what I did, use a walkthrough or something.
Awesome, awesome video. One of these days I want to get the Ultimate Sega Genesis collection so I can play these games because I am a hardcore rpg gamer and these games look like so much fun, gotta love retro games!
A lot of people didn't realize that Phantasy Star III is one of the two ships that escape from the planet near the end of Phantasy Star II. That for me was huge, I loved having that plot hole filled. Knowing that I realized that Phantasy Star III is more like a 'Gaiden' Game to the original 4 Phantasy Stars. So you shouldn't let it 'taunt' the originals too much. Its still great. I should review that one soon.
You're right. Knowing about the spaceship/colony thing does make Phantasy Star 3 seem a better fit into the series. Also about the 3D dungeons, they kick ass! I played the original on SMS and PS4 mostly. Well, until PSO came out for DC.
IV Is My Personal Favorite Of The Early Year's. But I Only Ever Got II & IV Physical But I Is My 2nd Favorite Glad For My Digital Copy. I Physical Is Getting Expensive 😕
I think there's a beta of PSIV around that showed it was originally going to be for the Sega CD (hence how they would've brought back the 3D dungeon crawler look) and would've have cinematic cut scenes like the Lunar series but since the SCD was dying off, Sega decided to instead have the game be a Genesis game.
I rented Phantasy Star 2 the first time I ever played it. I think I did pretty good at the time, but without any clue about what spells did what and who could equip certain weapons, it was a bit overwhelming. The dungeons proved to be really confusing though with no map, and this was pre-internet days.
Hey man, I dont know if you know this but there's a secret room with a chest in the original PS1 in medusa's tower. I've checked the internet and nobody mentions it in faq's, maps, etc...
I had the luck of buying PS 1 for the equivalent of one dollar this week. Was going to sell it as I don`t collect master system games, but now I really think I`ll give it a try! Great review as usual!
phantasy star 3 really makes a lot of sense if you think of it as PS2 part 2, because it was more of a side quest. also i think too many people don't give it enough credit. it was one of the first console games to have real replayability with different partner choices, it introduced androids which have stuck with us thru to the CASTS of the new PS games, and the whole 'castaway palmans' storyline which continues into the PSO games.
Phantasy Star 1 is my all time favorite RPG. As for PS3 it was good as it's own RPG. I think many fans malign it because awkwardly fits in the PS Universe. At least 4 tried to give it more relevance at one point in the game.
Continued from last post: The DQ series didn't have monster animations till DQ6 (7-8 yrs later) and Final Fantasy didn't have monster animations till FF7 (about a decade later). At the same time the PS1 team was able to achieve fantastic visuals for a JRPG at the time. Beautiful colorful backgrounds and gorgeous ANIMATED overhead scenes
I’m with ya I loved PS3 and it had killer replay value 4 different characters and different endings.I loved the combat and the getting married at the end of each adventure was a cool and unique idea.PS3 is my fav with PS2 and than PS4
After missing out on this game as a teenager, I'm glad I finally played the Sega Ages version on the Nintendo Switch! I appreciate your passion for this game but am a little shocked that you've never noted that the game nerfs Noah!! His magic points/spell points are SOOOOO low and it mildly ruins his character's utility, particularly in the end game. He is not able to do ANYTHING useful in the final dungeons because he's forced to save hie meager magic points for the final battles. What's the point of him being there if he can only execute weak attacks for 90% of the ending?!! Still happy I finally beat the game :)
that sonics segas collection also has phantasy star 1, all you have to do is beat the whole act 1 of sonic 2, with two players , and you will unlock phanatsy star 1, or check the extras on the menu or check online to see how to do it, so you can start it from the begging. I just beat the 4th one yesterday, i started part one the begging of Augst for the 1st time. and just beat the 4 the one yesterday, truly a great story and game, hope this helps.
I said this on thefirst PS1 review, but I'll say it again. Phantasy Star 1 was a techinical marvel at the time. PS1 was the only and FIRST JRPG that utilized a massive 4MB cartidge. The 3D dungeons were unheard of on an 8bit system but somehow they were able to do it. Even better, they were able to run it at a very smooth consistent framerate. Look at all the games besides PS1 that tried to do the 3D dungeons at that time. Many of them were slideshows and unplayable during that part of the game.
I'm a little surprised you didn't mention the ultra rare Phantasy Star remake on the Mega Drive, considering you have the box standing there on your desk.
Thanks for the insightful review. I tried only PhS2, and it somehow didn't grab my attention - i guess your vid explains why. Now i'm convinced i should go backwards to PhS1 and probably will enjoy it.
You know what, I have to thank you, I didn't know about this game before I saw this, and when I played it, I was like ok, crap, I've been missing out! And now, I love the series, it's awesome, typical of Sega, really - I wonder if people finally noticed Sega when it was gone?
It was an Iconic trilogy parallel and in paradox to ancient and future human history. From P☆1 resembling an advance ancient civilization on earth (Map realms). To P☆2 resembling Multi Planetary realms, like the orange/red desert with a life greenhouse bio dome render map (like Mars!) . Then the familiar famous similar trend *senior* chief rocket port engineer name *Alon* ( you guess in real life) who transport/portal map you to a dark cold atmosphere rich planet (like Titan). All the way to Dark(Falls) Matter geomagnetic space storms ( boss) that mess with the exponential advancing almighty goddess project & protector, ( AI singular BOSS😲) who's mind gets messed up, with forces just like what CME weather can do to electronics ( computer ai tuning sentient🤖⚡👹👀). Only to find out *WhereTF* all humanity tax money was spent to create those espionage-race (solar interstellar elites secrecy underground in planets and motherships 😲😡) . That make YOU and allies riot against ✊. In P☆3 became those new hide out space stations as another trilogy 1000 year later (simulation time scale thoery) of flat-earth religion world ( matrix dome) of mid-evil rendering into eventually *new* MMORPG revolution.
