Discussion on the front mounted 140mm fans in the Phanteks Eclipse P500A DRGB case:
- The fans being non-PWM 3pin and mounting rails obstructing the fan blade airflow and RGB
- Possible solutions (5m32s) & my chosen solution with the results (24m53s)
Final results:

Alternative solution can be found here where the person front mounted the fans on the outside of the core chassis and modified the plastic on the front grill to allow for the extra space. This is a better option for those who think they may need to use 120mm fans on the front at any point in the future:

I think this is a much less heavy handed solution than making a big hole at the bottom of your front panels, which presents a few problems of its own, specifically creating an easy way for dust on the floor to make its way into the case. In that option you are also still pushing air through the metal frame, which will increase noise significantly and reduce airflow. I am planning to make this modifications once I get a tool to cut the steel.

Fantastic job! I will most likely go this route once my case arrives. I'm not even that worried about destroying the mounts as I rarely (ie never) change fans on a PC that has already been built. Should the need for mounts rise in the future that front panel area looks excellent for modding some own mounts.

I would have tried to cut the plastic on the front panel instead, seems easier and the case would still be intact. Good outcome though, I think you got what you wanted out of the mod, thumbs up!

I think the main thing is being aware what the pro's and con's are for each method and what you intend to install inside the case. What I can say now I'm using this in practice is the cpu fan/cooler is louder than all 3 front combined even when the rpm is dialled up. Other review sites commented on this case being loud at high fan speeds but honestly I can go pretty high without noticing any noise above background levels.... this is an added advantage for this method imho and something to weigh up.

Fantastic job! This was my idea just to cut the 120mm part, but you took it a step further with cutting the whole thing. What did you use to cut the metal? I only have a drill, so I was just going to use that with a boring bit.
@bigbangerz5856
@bigbangerz5856 3 года назад
ty for your kind comments. I used a DeWalt multitool which is basically an oscillating blade power tool nothing special. Since the metal chassis is essentially plain steel you could easily use a hand saw just take your time, if your drill bit can act like a milling machine that would also work but be sure to clean up afterwards as the metal debris will conduct and you don't want that shorting out your motherboard etc... Its been a few months now since I did the mod and gotta say I'm really pleased with the results and performance. With the fan controller I can turn up all three front fans to 70-80% full rpm and barely hear them over background noise this case is exceptional when modded.

If the fans fail and new 140mm fans are needed, do you think 140mm fans from different brands fit those modified mounts? I'm asking cause I really want to do this as well, but I'm scared of the fans failing in the future and not being able to mount new 140mm fans. Since the fans aren't PWM, I was thinking about upgrading them in the future.
@bigbangerz5856
@bigbangerz5856 3 года назад
yes the fans are standard size, check the dimensions of the PWM fans you should be fine. If you use a fan controller you get the same benefits as PWM anyway fyi

Did it make the fans nore silent? I have them now at 800 rom and they sre hella quit and good airflow, but shen they reach 1000+ rpm. They starting to get noisy. Did you experienced also some temp drops?
@bigbangerz5856
@bigbangerz5856 3 года назад
I believe it does when the fans are above 60%, at normal setting no you cant hear the difference at all. The standout feature for this case is its performance at a given noise level imho this mod raises that a little further i.e. you can push more air through for a given background noise. I didn't monitor the temps sorry I would guess it has a small effect, I would say this mod is mostly about the aesthetics and presentation of the DRGB fans with a small benefit to performance, you'll have to give Gamers Nexus a poke to do a follow up article :)

@bigbangerz5856
@bigbangerz5856 3 года назад
I haven't no because I've not noticed any vibration issues, noises or concerns even at max fan speeds. As I was doing the mod I was thinking whether or not to add some dampening material like a soft rubber but honestly its not necessary from my experience.

For me just buy 3x120mm. No hassle, more resale value if put the case for sale. Anyway, great effort on your part.
@bigbangerz5856
@bigbangerz5856 4 месяца назад
then you have 3x120 which is pointless for the case given it has room for 3x140 which is less noise and more airflow... your comment makes no sense and what is the resale value of case in 4yrs time?

@@bigbangerz5856 so do you think that everyone can do the mod? I agree 140mm is better than 120mm. My comment is about the mod, like what I have said, not anyone can do the mod. Using 3x 120mm can fix the "concern" you have on that case without modding. Again, nice video and great effort on you.,

It took me more trouble to take the time and effort to create a RU-vid video to help/inform others than the case mod itself. If I was to do it again on someone else's case it would take 15-20mins tops. The main reason to do this mod and others like is to fix the aesthetics of the case. Phanteks themselves (along with many other retailers) show the unobstructed fans in their promotional material. The performance and noise reduction benefits are secondary yes but there non the less.

how is it hard I literally show you every step of the way in detail, all you have to do is cut the steel frame you can do that with a DIY hacksaw if you wish. You'd literally have to be someone that has never cut/sawed metal in your entire life to not follow what I showed it so obvious I even point to the area that are cut and show the results after. How can you not follow that wtf? I can't make it any more simple...

Hello. I really don't want this to come across as rude so please don't interpret it as so. Merely a heads up there's an alternative solution. I just really wouldn't recommend people do this to their cases as it completely removes the option to change to 120's in future and is a very heavy handed / overcomplicated solution, with permanent damage done to the case. There was no need to cut away any metal. Literally earlier today, I modified my P500A for this purpose, and all that was needed was to remove some of the 'excess' plastic from behind the mesh on the front panel. When looking at it, it looks like it's now possibly how it was intended to be all along by design, but that there was a problem or error with the mould in manufacturing that wasn't fixed. There's no visible changes and zero structural damage with the way its done, and the 140 fans fit, with the ability to still attach 120's or properly fit a smaller radiator etc. I am going to make a post to reddit later today or tomorrow with some pictures and will post a link back here! *edit* - the plastic removed was not the thick 'structural/visual' part right at the bottom which you pointed out. My pics will make it clear, I just don't have the time to sort it right now! Cheers.
@bigbangerz5856
@bigbangerz5856 3 года назад
hey, no that's ok you opted for cutting the plastic away and that was your solution glad it worked for you, as I said in the video I did consider it. Personally I will never attach 120mm fans to the front of this case anymore than I'd use a 3.5" floppy drive. Gamers Nexus showed us not to put a radiator on the front for thermal performance but I appreciate there maybe a few niche cases where that could be an attractive option for some like a custom water loop for both GPU and CPU. In my case with the mesh panel on you cannot see the modification just the unobstructed fans in their original position. I'd be interested to see the pics of your modification in particular with the fans being closer to the front mesh pls do share a link its good to get this info out there. In your situation you'll still have obstructed air flow I'd imagine behind the fans I don't know what difference that makes in reality everyone obviously has the struts for the fan motor itself anyway... so possibly very little but it will have some effect. Plus I assume your bottom fan is now resting right up against the plastic which if it is will cut off at least 20% of the airflow of that fan where as my bottom fan being mounted further back has a good 1inch or more gap to pull the air in. If you shifted your fans up to the highest mount position then you'll have I imagine the same problem at the top but hopefully you do still see the 3 fans in their entirety and the front panel hasn't now obstructed the RGB lighting top or bottom... that was my concern. So there are benefits to my solution as long as you don't ever need front mounted 120mm fans or a radiator of those proportions as it would be a pain to retro fit a bracket for that.

@bigbangerz5856
@bigbangerz5856 11 месяцев назад
well you could but 2 good reasons not to are 1- the case is supplied with 140mm RGB fans so you would have to buy 120mm fans 2- 140mm fans are better for high airflow due to the size and rpm you want to force air through. So not only are you spending more money you are also down grading your PC case and setup.

Just buy another 3x120mm fan pack from phanteks & mount it outside the panel... And mount the old three 140 fan at the top & back of the case...
@bigbangerz5856
@bigbangerz5856 3 года назад
That would probably work but the reason you buy the P500A over the P400A is the extra space incl. the ability to have the larger quieter 3x140mm fans at the front i.e. you might as well get the P400A at that point as you'd be paying £33 to downgrade your chassis specs

@@bigbangerz5856 quality 120 mm fans can be as quiet or even quieter than 140mm (can't beat nf a12x25). As for me i d take p500a over p400a for the single pci-e cables cutout :P the looks of psu shroud, cable management and the glass on the hinge, instead of thumbscrews.

pff hardly, the case is still fine 2yrs later and I recently upgraded the internals to AM5 and the GPU too... really happy with the results no issues with the fans. So unless Phanteks have revised the design you're simply choosing to live with partially obstructed RGB and airflow but if it doesn't bother you then yeah leave it as is life is full of choices.
