This movie was played as a double feature with Rocky Horror picture Show side by side. Both are cult like movies of the times and both were great when the came out.

Really? I came across it on Fox movie channel and I just had to watch the trailer on RU-vid to see how it was advertised. I figured it was a flop back in the day. But people actually liked that kind of stuff huh???

@@elttygomez3980 It did kinda flop but grew out to be a cult classsic afterwards. But mainly because rocky horror took most of the fame who got alot more populair (probably because rocky horror was alot more edgier with the sexual themes and the transvestite stuff)

I was in the same situation! Saw it when I was 6 ... I'm now 54. I remembered the guy in the mask and that there was lots of live music. Some of the images stayed in my head, like the lightning bolt flying at the stage. But other than that nothing ... not a single actor or a title. 48-year mystery solved!

I'm sure nobody cares, but anyway, I found this movie on DVD at a pawn shop, priced at $2 (they let me have it for $1), and I was like "Sweet, wonder if it'll be any good." I mean, I'd heard of it before, and being a fan of De Palma, I figured I'd get some enjoyment out of it. So, I watched it, I loved it, I thought about it more and more, bought the digital soundtrack and listened to that a bunch of times, then found an original VINYL copy for $25. So, by then, I decided it was finally time to order the Scream Factory blu ray. And I did. Now I love this movie more than ever. What a perplexingly underappreciated gem from the '70s. Maybe they'll spoil us with a 4K edition for its 50th anniversary.

Sissy Spacek was part of the crew for this film. She found out that Brian De Palma was planning to do a horror film, so she auditioned for it. Determined to get the part, she showed up with her hair slick and sticky due to Vaseline. She ended up getting the part in “Carrie”.

I saw this in a theater when it first came out in '74. I was 12 years old. My mom used to drop me off at the theater with some cash and I could pick whatever movie I wanted and no one knew or cared. Saw Tommy the following year!

I used to do the same thing. If I wanted to see an R movie that was especially gory, I'd tell my mom, and she'd wait to make sure I didn't need her to buy the tickets for me and my friend. Remember "The Town That Dreaded Sundown" (1976)? I think we needed her for that one. Also, try explaining to kids today that there were stores and bars that would sell us beer and cigarettes when we were 15 and looked 15.

Saw it at the MERBIN theater in Philly when it first came out in 74 . I always thought it was a Rocky Horror knock off but Phantom actually beat RHPS to the punch and was released nine months prior .I remember standing in line to get in there was a gigantic three sheet poster and 8 color lobby cards right along side of it ......impressive

I love how it tricks you into thinking ‘Swan’ is supposed to be Raoul, but in actuality, he’s the phantom himself, and who we think the ‘villain’ (The titular Phantom) is actually the hero. That’s like some genius marketing.

Rocky Horror was a live musical first. Then they did a film adaptation. PotP bombed in theatres. But gathered a cult following. It is brilliant. Just watch it and enjoy.

When it came. Out in 1974 it was Monty python and the holy grail was released with it rocky horror came out a year later . In 1976 the paradise was with wizards

Can someone help me with a mystery? I remember a movie trailer in the 70s that begins with a shot of a person with long hair seen from the back. The dialogue is something like, "Comb your hair. Put on your makeup. Turn around. Then you hear a scream as the person turns around to reveal a skull. I've looked for this trailer for years. Now, ChatGPT tells me that the trailer is for Phantom of the Paradise, but I can't find that particular trailer on RU-vid. Is ChatGPT foolin' me?

The only thing that surprises me about this is that it came out the year BEFORE Rocky Horror. Just think. If things had gone slightly differently, THIS would be the cult classic and RHPS would have been the obscure one.

I disagree. I love Phantom of the Paradise and I believe it is an extremely underrated film but The Rocky Horror Picture Show had a lot going for it. Also the stage play (The Rocky Horror Show) was around a year before this film. If this came out after The Rocky Horror Picture Show then it could have just as easily been dismissed as a knock off.

I disagree. As much as I like this film. Rocky Horror struck a nerve with moviegoers that this film could not do no matter what. Actually before RHPS became a midnight cult movie success,20th Century Fox paired the two films together at some showings, but not much came out of it then.

I saw this many years before I became familiar with the Phantom of the Opera story, so I had no preconceptions about it then. I thought it was a very sad story, with largely repulsive characters, but there were certain scenes that mesmerized me.

Saw this when it was first released on base at Ft. Monmouth N.J. when I was at computer repair school in the US Army. I thought it was great! Still do, Paul Williams wrote the soundtrack and played Swan in the movie. Jessica Harper played phoenix and did her own vocals - she payed the school teacher on "Little house on the prairie" TV show... Jessica has some solo albums present day...

I won free tickets to this film as a 12 year old in 1975. I had to be caller number 41 to a local top 40 radio station and I was. I was thrilled to win and hoped I might win the fancy mirantz stereo system they were raffling at the movie theatre the night of the film showing. However, someone else won the fancy stereo. Now watching this video it all seems extremely silly.
