I'd say incredibly underrated film composer. There Will be Blood has my vote for greatest film score of the new millennium (and this is coming from an ardent John Williams fan).

I’ve thought the scores for There Will Be Blood and The Master were just incredible immediately. Just not the music you’d naturally expect to be put to either of those films but they work so perfectly you can’t imagine them with anything else.

jesus ocando Anderson is by no means “ignored” by critics, There will be blood was named greatest film of the 21st century by the New York Times, and Radiohead ( Jonny Greenwood being the main guitarist)records often top greatest albums of all time lists. So no they’re not underrated by any means

Graham Newmarch Speaking of the beginning: Did anyone else feel high during the very 1st shot? The dark, wooing sound that crept up on the screen as the words "Phantom Thread" appeared. It felt so surreal, and I might be crazy but I have been high and the beginning gave the same feeling. I watched it another 2 times and the same effect happened too.

Which theater if you don't mind my asking? Was it before the wide release?

It was actually the very first screening of the film. It was at the Ahrya Fine Arts theatre in LA... And I got to meet Paul!

Superb film and soundtrack. This is what movies can be.

It's also my favorite part of the entire piece. Everything is placed so perfectly. Everything just works as one whole, and it's greater than the sum of its parts.

Exactly what I thought. Definitely inspired by Debussy's lush melancholy and gorgeously tumbling waves of notes that seem to drop down gently from somewhere divine.

Don't know why you're so hung-up on this, but if you look back at these comments, you'll see that nobody said it sounds *exactly* like Debussy or that Debussy is the only artist whose influence can be heard in this. But plenty of people (on this page, and other forums) have made similar associations, not to mention the fact that the film's soundtrack (curated by Greenwood) also contains at least one actual piece by Debussy. I think it's safe to say that Greenwood had Debussy somewhere in his thinking when working out the "vibe" he was going for. I've even seen other comments on this page mentioning that it calls to mind Bill Evans at times, which I can also hear. This is, of course, all very subjective stuff, but you seem to want to make an objective ruling on it.

Yes. The film also featured scherzo from Debussy's string quartet. It was so close to the style of other music in Phantom Thread, that you'd have to know the piece on order to tell the difference.

It's Debussy, Ravel, and Satie all together with a jazz element thrown in (check out that chord at 0:16). It also evokes old Hollywood gorgeously.

i love radiohead, and the work obviously of Jonny in films but, lets be objective people- is not the greatest living film composer. it might be one of the greats. but not the greatest. lets keep it real guys. still its fucking brilliant hands down no doubt about it.

Naaa. dont think so guy- i believe it is premature to say that. while the guy is still alive. art needs time and therefore perspective. and with that in mind time will give you a better perpective to judge who will stand the test of time and still be relevant. like so many others artist not only composers. all kinds of artist. so to say that just now. is just talking without having lots a perspective. cdreyes81 "Star Wars" hadn't won a Score Oscar since the original. I don't think it's gonna change with "The Last Jedi". The score that could possibly beat "Phantom Thread" is "The Shape of Water", but Alexandre Desplat did just win recently for "The Grand Budapest Hotel" (even though Hans Zimmer should have gotten it for "Interstellar") and the Academy clearly loved "Phantom Thread" more than anyone expected, so Greenwood could possibly win.

Sorry I don't know you and you are probably cool but this is a ridiculous statement. Ennio Morricone is the best since Hermann and the best of all time.

Justin Aronson Fair statement, Ennio Morricone composes excellent music (I did think of him when writing the comment), and has such a wide and vast body of work under his belt, but I rate Greenwood and Hermann above him bc they can both work in such a variety of genres and styles, and they can make music more visceral then Morricone. Apples and Oranges though really.

Listen to The Handmaiden soundtrack and then to the score for Jackie and then see if your statement still stands...
