SPOILER ALERT (and i never comment on youtube videos, so. here we go) dont you think he accepted "the choice that he made" because he missed his mom, and was unable to break free from his craft, so accepting "the choice he made" was a way for him to feel like he was being mothered by alma, without really being able to say no. she put him in a position that not only made him hallucinate his own dead mother, but required him to give up all control so that she could be a mother. only his sister could provide that role for him, and i think he felt guilt that he had cursed his sister. he accepted this "curse" because it benefitted everyone involved. just my take.
ruxxell Dominance and self importance of Woodcock is beautifully and complexly conflicted with his need of feeling ‘vulnerable’ and being ‘mothered’. The film is mostly about how we lose ourselves by looking at how paradoxical and complicated our internal nature and feelings are.
While I did understand the whole needing to be mothered concept, I still didn't get why he would admit to Cyril that he had made the biggest mistake of his life by bringing Alma into their home. It just seemed so sudden and out of character to go from wanting her out of his life to accepting his fate in her hands. I would have understood it if he had simply said that she's turning everything upside down, period.
Interesting take... My idea is that he was obsessed with his mom, so much that it prevented him from truly loving another woman, another woman who was ready to care for him, like his mother, but contrary to that, an equal partner. I think when Chris said "the choice he made", Chris meant that he accepted the fact that she's poisoning him. "I need you to be weak, and then be strong again". The only time she felt important when he was voulnerable, because that was the only time he expressed that he needs her, when she knew that he needs her all the time, but wants her to be submissive. While Alma, being the girl he fell in love with, was anything but submissive. We fall in love with the people we need, not who we want, and later we can't just pick and choose our partner's traits however it befits our momentary mood.
yes, at the beginning of the movie, in the scenes we see throughout the movie where she confesses the nature of their relationship to the doctor, she said that she liked to see him sleeping in bed because he was like a baby (I guess that's how she got the idea). Maybe this is the only way she could feel tenderness towards an otherwise difficult man, and gain a sense of control and balance in the relationship. It wasn't clear to me why it worked for him, but after your comment it makes sense. He considered his mother the love of his life, his friend and confidant, and wasn't able to experience that level of intimacy and love with anyone else (Cyril was only his right hand). So it makes sense that being mothered was the key. It's a movie about ghosts (and phantoms) after all.
I had to skip some parts because of the spoilers but why THE HELL didn't he talk about the mesmerizing soundtrack by Jonny Greenwood? That's like 50% of the movie.
Yodistic but jump cuts are just annoying as hell sometimes. Long shots are impressive to me. I understand the intent of them, but that wasn’t my point.
Totally agree. Thats the reason i never liked JJ, long takes mean you can actually carry a conversation about movies. If you're constantly editing it means you can't flow and you need time to write more notes because you dont really know what to say. You can tell Chris knows what he wants to say and has a lot to say about it.
Long shot is a type of shot where the view is from a long distance, where people look tiny; I think you’re confusing terms here pal. And on top of that, Chris uses jumpcuts in a lot of his videos; they’re just disguised by good editing.
avo7778 hiya. According to tbe crew, the scene takes place in the Royal Albert Hall, London for a big party scene (new years?) but couldnt film it there for some reason, so instead the ballroom at the Blackpool Tower, which was seen in 'Miss Pereguine's home for peculiar children '. Ive not seen the film but intend to make a short video on location of scene very soon
avo7778 both movies i mentioned, both lots of crew stayed at Hilton Blackpool were i work so chatted to a few. I was almost in it but couldnt swap shift. Sounds like i dodged a bullet because it was a very hor 17 hr shoot with hardly anything to drink, nowhere to sit and no one could leave set! Two suites were used for all costumes which got chained up for extra security. For Pereguine film, two family rooms were used for editing (with a flimsy hand written note saying 'do not disturb' stuck on door!)
@@Moochtv dodged a bullet not being in Daniel day Lewis' final film? That's a strange perspective to have... I would have killed to be in a position to so that. Who needs water? Who needs a job at that point? Kids, if you're in a position to be in a film with daniel day lewis you drop everything you're doing and make it happen.
I'm sorry but I must correct you. Young Fellows should never try to pick up girls or even talk to them. That is harassment. Young fellow should wait for women to come to talk them(that is not harassment because...penis). Please sign up for your nearest Gender Studies class to correct your thinking.
Benjamin Sagman Yeah I know you too. The last time we meet, we were talking about how cool a radio show with a blob fish, an elephant, a loaf of bread, and The flash would be
Spoiler: I feel like the ending made sense because Reynolds clearly loves Alma and does appreciate her caring for him but he needs to be brought down (in this case poisoned or sickened) and nursed back to health in order for this to work since his regular demeanor is so taught and high functioning that he’s blind to the feelings and emotions of others, only mistaking it as sabotaging his art and creative process.
Cameron Hawes I don’t think the poison was the actual ending. The choice to eat the poison was. He accepted her finally. By eating the poison, he was saying I accept that you love me. I personally think this will be the last time we will poisoned. I think that after this he had realized everything she put on the like for him.
Steven Woe i know this is late but at the end he says to her I’m getting a little bit hungry so maybe by then he does accept her but he still likes to be taken care of since it probably reminds him of us mother taking care of him.
I watched the movie on 70mm and it was one of my favorite experiences ever. Paul Thomas Anderson always has a purpose in his movies. And this one is absolutely masterpiece. Probably Daniel's second best film (after There Will Be Blood). Of course Daniel proved to me again in this film why he is the best and most dedicated artis of our generation. Left the theater in tears because I know it's the last time I'll see him in a big screen.
Oh man, congrats on being accepted. You're very passionate and really knowlegeable about movies and your audience is very different from those of other critics, really brings generations closer.
So happy for you, Chris!! Agreed, Daniel Day Lewis is amazing! One of the best actors of all time, definitely an icon. Heard a bad review of the film already before this one, but I'm going to watch it anyway and give it a chance.
“Phantom Thread” was an outstanding drama movie and one my second favorite 2017 films of the year. I’ve seen it during my vacation break at Palm Beach, Florida and went to a clever theater which is better place to see than most theaters out there because I want to know about this movie and after I’ve seen it, it was perfect. Perfect cast, perfect story, perfect music (the most), perfect fashion designs, and a perfect Day-Lewis as always. Just looking at him he could take any chance to be well acted in every films and he done so much and too bad it was last because he is getting retired for his acting years. The film basically about a fashion designer who worked hard for his dress creations without being mistake for his actions until he fall for a young waitress who is willing to be part of the design and he wanted to stay concentrate in his work and the people including the lover couldn’t take any chance for his job. It is well done and basically about a hardworking man just can’t take a break and wanted to be in his own way without being trusted and that’s how I do just work and concentrate without being hesitate by others. Some people will find it boring and it’s a drama film with great performances, but I don’t get bored and it was great for most part and Paul Thomas Anderson done his work from the past and it is of my top ones at its best and Boogie Nights is one of my all time favorite films. I love this movie and Day-Lewis could take Oldman’s always choice awards any day. If not, then he’ll be regret for his career and move on to be well acted for most. 10/10. Phantom Thread was nominated 6 Academy Awards Including Best Picture.
You deserve it Chris. You're the best critic on RU-vid. You bring a consummate professionalism that really gives your videos a big boost. I would compare you to A.O. Scott or Peter Travers but I think you have a far more personal, real connection to your audiences. In 2017 you released the review of the Emoji movie, your most accomplished review. The whole video has a gritty, overbearing feel which really lets the audience know how frustratingly bad the movie is. It's a review so funny that most people don't even listen to anything besides you shouting 'IT SUUUUCKKKKEEEDDDD!', but they should, because it's not just about how bad the Emoji movie is, but about how bad the movie scene has become today. Hey Chris! *Giant axe*
I just watched the movie for the second time. When I watched it in the theater I was totally disappointed and really did not like the movie. Maybe seeing Daniel Day Lewis as an old, cantankerous man was not working for me. However, the second time I watched it, I was able to appreciate the great acting and the dynamic between the characters. I even understood the twist toward the end of the movie a little more, since I picked up the suffering that the artist was feeling when he was creating. At first I thought he was just mean and degrading, but then I began to see that the little sounds at breakfast or people chewing their food really caused him anxiety. It was almost the way an autistic person reacts to certain sounds and sudden movements. I feel that he was able to come down from that manic phase for a brief time to some normalcy when Alma cooked for him with her special sauce. I too believe this had something to do with how he related to his Mother as a child. This actually made sense to me the second time around.
The framing and the use of colors are amazing in this film, just stunning. It looks like kubrick has framed some of those shots. This is PTA most visually beatiful film i believe.
I appreciate that opinion because everyone screams about There Will Be Blood being his best shot movie, but I honestly think its cinematography is overrated) despite it still being great.) I think The Master offers his best cinematography.
Jeremy Jahns is sucks. He's a slave to Hollywood lobby, like watchmojo and rotten tomatoes. Check out his best movies of the year videos again. This guy on the other hand... he's a true cinema guru.
This is actually going to work. Totally feasible. You set up the group/association. Adopt simple rules of membership and voting. Have a crew to record and edit the stuff, and off you go - with your own awards. Your own choices. Internet critic, I would say. Not YT critic, though.
Jeremy Jahns is a moron man. As much as I happen to disagree with Chris he always grounds his opinion and can appreciate a slower movie. Jeremy Jahns on the other hand has attention span of a five year old and cares about nothing but spectacle. If there was any youtube critic choice award (and I think it is a great idea) it shouldn't be decided by three people, rather a few youtube critics from each country.
Type40Tardis There was an awards that youtuber reviewers did called the Youreviewers movie awards, they didn't do it for the last 2 years since they got busy
Chris, are you going to review "The Punisher"? you did reviews for "Daredevil", "Jessica Jones", "Luke Cage", "Iron Fist" and "The Defenders"...so The Punisher is next right? :)
diet coke Ohhhhh no! You are even here? The world is so small. But, unfortunately, I have to encounter only idiots likes you repeatedly. Ram is a creepy dude. Lol. And you are judging a Yorgos Lanthimos movie as if you know about the art of film making
It kind of sucks living in Topeka. We don't have Phantom Thread, Call Me By Your Name or The Shape of Water. I should really move to Chicago or LA or NYC.
Yeah we have two Regal Cinemas here. One for all the major releases and a second run theater. If I want to see all those Oscar nominees, I usually have to go to Kansas City which is only a little over an hour away but still.....
D.C. Is also pretty great as smaller, awards movies come here faster than you'd think! After LA and NYC obviously but I'd guess around the same time as Chicago and possibly Boston as well.
I agree with Chris on the ending, it did come out of left field and I understand it. But i'm just not sure if it was satisfying to me, i felt like the film was building up to something and then it just sort of went that direction when i feel like another way could of been a more intense and interesting climax.
it worked, but a bit disappointing cause paul thomas anderson already used this twist in the master and he kinda loses originality points for that cause of self plagiarism.
Can one of you explain what this decision was that felt like it was out of 'left field', i feel like this part is going straight past my head because i'm unsure what you're referring too?
This was my favorite film of the year. Big PTA fan, so may be biased but I like the "choice" and I loved the performance (Vicky was insanely good, went really toe to toe with DDL) and the photography was incredible without him even having a dedicated DP (though he did mention it was a crew effort. Saw it at a guild screening in November on 35mm and at the Arclight in 70mm, both were stunning. Enjoy LA!
I always appreciate hearing your thoughts on films Chris. I admire that your so passionate about this medium. I really love Anderson's work! Really looking forward to seeing this.
so cool to see a RU-vid film reviewer get to go to the critic choice awards. congratulations. I think it's very much deserved. hope you had a fabulous night at the event😊
I loved this film and thought it was beautifully directed. It was far from boring. I found myself on the edge of my seat wondering when the shoe was going to drop on this abrasive relationship. However I found everything after the “food reveal” to be somewhat of a cop out. Reynold’s reaction to the reveal was so inconsistent because it jeopardized his true love, which was his work.
Congrats on your membership to the BFCA! And to go the awards event!!!??? That must be a dream-come-true. Thank you for all your work on your channel here - I always look forward to your videos.
RatchetClank - Part of enjoying a film is analyzing it. Your comment makes no sense. As a passionate film lover, when I watch a movie, I notice everything about it.
I love the direction pta is taking his film career. I think the collaboration between pta and ddl are a golden pairing. I would love if they kept making films together for years to come. Hopefully Lewis re-considers again.
Congratulations on going to the Critics' Choice Awards! You most certainly deserve it after all your hard work. Thank you for making my mornings brighter.
That's interesting! I loved both but was a little happier when I got to see all the characters evolve so much in s02 and both Tina and Sherlock were really great! Would you consider signing the petition if you want to see more? It's on change dot org
Chris - Been a long time fan - you deserve EVERYTHING coming to you and then some. Congrats on the event tomorrow - BEST film critic on RU-vid or anywhere else! Cheers
I'd give Phantom Thread an A or A+. Part of why I love it so much is the comedic element. When I saw it at the Music Box in Chicago, the audience was HOWLING with laughter.
I felt like the movie glosses over important moments and dwells too long on things that don't matter all that much (especially in the opening). It also feels cheap that the two largest character moments are so plainly spoken; those two being when Reynolds gives the backstory of his mother and when he eats the omelet and Alma lays out exactly what her desires and intentions are. It made it feel like satire. We can see that Reynolds knows what's happening, just have the two characters continue on with this thing knowing full well what is occuring - that would feel natural. And to sit through so much of the opening, for the main character to then plainly say "this is my vice"...it just felt cheap. The cinematography and score felt disconnected or at odds with other things that were going on at times, not terribly so, but enough to catch my attention which has never happened in a PTA movie before. Acting was great, a very PTA theme, but this is probably tied with Boogie Nights for being PTAs weakest film for me (somewhere about a 7.6).
I actually did need her to say that because up until that point, I thought his slow chewing, intense eye contact and smile were all a challenge. I thought he was unaware of the omelette's true purpose but could see she was deliberately being a brat with her loud sounds and copious amounts of butter, and I thought he was determined to eat it anyway instead of blowing up like she (I thought at the time) expected him to. I had no idea he was in on it or what was actually going on until she said those words.
Congratulations, Chris!! Movies are a great passion for you and you are just enormous reviewing them. It's really fair that you are acknowledged for that.
no thank you chris. you're the one consistently putting out quality, thoughtful reviews of films we can always count on. you're the one critic who's opinion I consider most. hard work pays off man, congrats.
Congratulations, Chris! Really happy for you! You deserve being invited to such events cause of how passionate you are about films. Hope you have a great time.
Congrats on the achievement Chris! It's well deserved and hopefully just the start of things I hope one day to see you use so much of your natural untapped talent in film critique in a blockbuster movie!
OMG!!! I've been watching you for years! I'm so glad you got approved and get this opportunity! I very much respect your work. Looking forward to many years of your reviews.
I just saw this movie and it was INCREDIBLE . It’s definitely a movie that takes its time unfolding the story, but I was completely captivated Daniel Day Lewis performance in this film.
