My community explained the hairpins to me with the example of “handing out your phone number to someone at a party.” Jinshi giving Maomao the hairpin was the modern day equivalent of “so call me maybe?”

Could also be a bit like giving out Valentines letters or chocolates. The intent of giving them out can be to build a good impression of yourself, or to initiate a potential more intimate contact or message of thanks.

Yeah so a man gifting a woman a hairpin is basically an offer to enter a courtship
@TalasDD

its literally a prof of allignment and interest. one aspekt like the Coins in the US military. its a physical representation of aright to a favor. another aspekt is to prove to a third party you know someone and third it can also be a sign of courtship.
@Martel_Clips
@Martel_Clips 9 месяцев назад
theres a bit of "entering courtship" aswell as "this is one of my people" the same as in medieval europe, an envoy from a noble / king would have either direct heraldic signs of that person or a modified version of their heraldry as proof of them serving that person and as a badge of protection. gyokuyo giving them jewelry is not because she wants any romantic relashionship with them, it signifies they are protected by gyokuyo. gyokuyo can extend this kind of protection because she is one of the favorite of the emperor (and potentially the futur empress knowing the emperor basically only visit her Aduo and Lifa), in addition to that she is the princess of a western kingdom which is wealthy enough thanks to the silkroad (in part thanks to gyokuyo sending information back home) same thing goes for lifa givin an hairpin both as a token of friendship which as basically a value of protection, she is a princess aswell, and another potential empress (obviously hurting someone that nursed her back to health might seem as an attack on her)
@thevonya3977
@thevonya3977 9 месяцев назад
More or less correct, It actually goes a little deeper than that. To give a hairpin or jewellery in this scenario is also to 'tag' the recipient as 'claimed'. This can have different meanings dependant on whom the hairpin or jewellery came from but the message is the same to all others watching: "I have claimed this lady, anything you do to her means you must go through me." Essentially this can range form an informal flirtation from a man (such as Jinshi), claiming your lady-in-waiting as your own (such as the jewellery given by Lady G) or formally telling your other lady's-in-waiting that the recipient has earned true respect and should be treated as if one her own (such as from Lady Lihau).

To give an explanation : Lishu's ladies in waiting were gossiping about her in the beginning of this or previous episode about her being picky about her food. Her foodtester actively bullied her by giving her a dish which contained the Mackerel she disliked, unknowingly poisoning Lishu with a fish she's allergic to. The taster didn't know the lady was allergic but she still knowingly gave her lady food she disliked, just to "teach her a lesson" in being picky. Hence MaoMao's warning, as the Emperor would see this as an act of poisoning and might even take the poison taster's life for it.
@tanvu2728
@tanvu2728 9 месяцев назад
ON TOP OF THAT.... the food taster in trying to bully her, actually ended up saving Lishu's and/or her own life because she swapped Lishu's food with Gyokuyou's food, that is why Maomao was talking about the jellyfish because Lishu was supposed to get Jellyfish and Gyokuyou would get Mackeral. but the jellyfish ended up with maomao, which contains the poison. moral of the story = bullying ironically saved life. but now we still dont know who actually tried to poison Lishu.
@Dragon4eva

Minor correction The food taster didnt give her the dish, the swap of dishes was made by the servers The food taster just didnt speak up that Lishu doesnt eat fish, because she thought she was giving her a lesson. However, because the food meant for Lishu ended up for Gyokuyou, the best poison tester in the palace caught it, so lucky strike there.

Another interesting point when Maomao was explaining her buckwheat allergy, was that once she realized that she had it, she tried to train herself against it much like the poisons. Evidence by the huge bowl of noodles. But she could not. In fact she's explaining that it only got worse. Sadly this is something that some people don't understand even today. While some allergies can fade or change over the course of your life, continued exposure usually makes it worse. You can't develop a resistance to it like poisons.

@@OverlordMel I'm not an expert by any means, butI imagine venoms are easier for the body to adapt to than some poisons, assuming you survive the envenoming. Venoms are organic in nature, at the end of the day they're just protein chains. The body probably possesses at least some ability to create immune cells designed to target and destroy specific forms of venom. I wouldn't be surprised if the use of venom in creating antivenom was in the same spirit as vaccines essentially being neutralized viruses for the body to interact with, the other ingredients in antivenom being things that counteract or at least minimize the symptoms of said venom, basically giving the body something to target and learn about without making things worse. Of course, this is merely conjecture on my part.

The young concubine girl's Ladies in Waiting do not like her. They subtlety bully her all the time. That one lady in waiting felt the girl was a brat because of being a picky eater (mentioned at the beginning of the episode). So she swapped the dishes with another concubine to force the girl to eat things she doesn't like. Little did she know that by doing so, she saved her own life as she swapped the poisoned soup as well. Mao Mao figured this out, but she was not going to let go the fact the bullies were trying to force feed food that can kill the young girl due to petty hatred and ignorance.

Note: Poor Lishu belongs to the last emperor, so... you know what kind of character the predecessor was. I won't call her lucky, but I recall that if there is a change of Emperor, the outgoing one's crop of concubines will be fully replaced, no questions asked, as concubines are supposed to be loyal to THEIR emperor, not the new one. If the takeover is hostile, then Lishu would be expected to join her lord in death. Edit: by the way, in the original novel and one of the comics (there are 2 running for the same story 1 month apart, believe it or not), Maomao has that smile explained by her face being locked in that pose by the poison, so I can infer its some fast-acting nerve agent. IIRC blowfish toxin does this, and it just so happens to be the very thing Maomao craves (and has acclimatized to). My nickname for Maomao at one point is therefore 'delicious poisons".

As far as i understand it: Someone tried to poison Lady Lishu with the soup, but the dish for Lady Lishu was swapped out by her own food tester with the dish for Lady Gyokuyou. So why did Lishus food tester swap the dishes ... well it seems Lady Lishus ladies-in-waiting do not really like her (they gossip about her right at the beginning of the episode that she is unfaithful because she was the consort/wife of the previous emperor and then came back as the consort of the current emperor and that she is a picky eater). They bully her in every way they can. So to make her eat something they think Lishu just does not like (little do they know she is allergic to fish) they swap the dishes with Lady Gyokuyou. That is why Maomao ends up with the specially made dish for Lishu with jellyfish instead of makrele and the poisoned soup.
@kezia-lemonthorne2507

It seems like there is people who believe allergies are just picky eating, not an actual threat to someone's life. Even nowadays. So the ladies-in-waiting assumed she was spoiled in her "issue of picky eating" by being allowed to not have to eat it. It's possible they even knew about the rashes it caused her and thought, "it's just a rash, don't be such a baby and eat the damn fish". So Lady Gyokuyou was right: ignorance is a sin.

16:45 she probably came to the idea of allergy shots from the same idea we see in that kind of story where people take up poison in small portions to get immune (i think maomao does the same with poisons too, and that's why she's not so affected by them?)
@daverboy
@daverboy 9 месяцев назад
For what it's worth, I believe she was actually saying that she *failed* to build up an immunity to buckwheat, though the methodology she was using was similar to allergy shots. With an allergy as severe as hers seems to be, she probably just doesn't have the ability to introduce small enough amounts to build up tolerance without hurting herself. Which means that what she's telling them is "I regularly consume poison as a hobby and even I don't mess around with food allergies," to demonstrate the seriousness of the situation.

This time, Zach gave a lecture on allergies. Thank you! Today, the existence of allergies is becoming better known in Japan, but unfortunately there are still many misconceptions. There are many cases where older people perceive not being able to eat due to allergies as just being selfish and not eating. In fact, even though the parents explained to the teacher that the child was allergic to buckwheat noodles, the elderly teacher did not understand and forced the child to eat his school lunch, saying that he had to correct his likes and dislikes, resulting in his hospitalization. 8:08 hairpin Since Gyokuyō gave her a necklace, she could have worn at least one of the three she received from Jinshi, Lihaku, and Lihua through her hair, but she decided to wear it on her sash on the advice of her colleagues that this would be disrespectful to those not chosen. In this way, she could show her loyalty to Gyokuyō by wearing only the necklace, while at the same time showing that she is not indifferent to the three who gave her the hairpin. 9:12 Namasu(Kuai) Originally, Namasu was a dish of raw animal or fish meat combined with seasonings. In Japan, the word "膾" is used for animal meat, while "鱠" is used for fish. 【膾】 The "月" on the left side of "膾" refers to the moon in the kanji meaning, but originally it was Nikuzuki, meaning meat. 【鱠】 The kanji for "魚" on the left side of "鱠" refers to fish. In Japan, the combination of red and white is the traditional color scheme used for celebratory occasions, and the ingredients would be carrots and daikon (daikon is said to be rare in the U.S., so think white turnip or radish). Normally, chopped mackerel would be added to this dish, but this time it was chopped jellyfish. Mackerel is also delicious, but the jellyfish offers a more enjoyable texture. In Japan, Namasu is sometimes eaten on a daily basis, but it is often included in a preserved food traditionally eaten to celebrate the New Year, called Osechi. Originally, the definition of Namasu should include chopped animal or fish meat, but as with Lishu, if you do not like fish, we recommend a simplified version with the fish meat removed. Peel the carrots and daikon radish and cut them into long, thin strips, adjusting the amount so that the ratio is about 6:1, then place them in a bowl and rub them together with a light sprinkle of salt. After that, squeeze out the water well, combine vinegar and sugar in a bowl at a ratio of 4:1, and add a little bit of soy sauce and stir to blend the flavors. These days, slicers are available, so it is easy to make. Generally, this is a dish that will keep for about a week if stored properly in the refrigerator. Personally, I prefer to add something called shimesaba because I like mackerel. Fresh mackerel is filleted and then sprinkled with salt to release the water, lightly washed and thoroughly drained, and then soaked in vinegar for about 15 minutes. It is then frozen for a day to prevent anisakis and then thawed naturally.

Basically everyone who comments on it disliked it but couldnt speak up against it cause, well, he was the Emperor. Thats why the current Emperor's mother looks so young. She got pregnant twice at a very young age. And spoiler, the Emperor dislikes his father's fetish and wont touch Lishu as she looks like a child. Couple things. Everyone KNEW the former emperor was messed up - he was emperor by mishap - his own MOTHER knew it and controlled the country on his behalf. The current Emperor's mother was 10 when she was impregnated, her father had planned it and set it up. Lishu was the former Emperor's concubine at age 9. However, by the time Lishu entered the scene, he was too far gone to violate her. I mention this because there seems to be quite a bit of misunderstanding, but there is no paralyzing poison in properly treated fugu. And if it is poisoned in the first place, it has not been properly treated. Perhaps the main reason for the spread of this misunderstanding is the fear that fugu is poisonous, and that it may paralyze people, even if only slightly. There is another reason. In addition to a sour condiment called ponzu (Japanese sauce called "ponzu"), fugu sashimi is served with "momiji oroshi," a grated combination of red pepper and daikon radish. When a large amount of this red seasoning called momiji oroshi is added, of course, the chili pepper gives a numbing effect on the tongue. Therefore, this momiji oroshi can cause some Japanese to mistakenly believe that they are numbed by fugu (blowfish) poison. 🤣

I’ve seen a few reactions to the age of Lady Lishu, and I wanted to give unprompted advice. Just because something is in a story doesn’t mean the story is saying it is okay, or asking you to pretend it is normal. Notes ❤: - "dowager" is a title, not her name - Jinshi didn't receive a pin from someone else, it's presumably his. Since it's usually the men who give out pins in the *context of courtship.* That, or it's influential people with subordinates they want to lay a claim on or give a token to for favors, like Gyokuyou.

How it was explained to me: Is there are 3 reasons for handing out a hairpin/accessory. If its from a woman, its basically acknowledging that person owes you a debt. If it comes from a man, its saying that they are either romantically intrested in you, or placing you under their protection. However: it could also just be a way of saying "We appreciate your hard work"

The Empress Dowager is quite young. They don't say exactly how old she is, IIRC, but she's probably in her early 40's here, with the Emperor being less thsn a year younger than the 35-year-old Ah-Duo (the oldest concubine). She was very young when she had the Emperor. Less so when she had the Emperor's brother.

"i know it was a different time period and culture" i mean even in the setting its implied that was unusual.. but who's going to speak up against the emperor.. as Maomao said in an earlier eps "the word of the emperor is the word of the heavens" and it seems to imply the previous Emp had a thing for.. "young" as the empress dowager, his wife.. gave birth very young (as Maomao and the other serving girl; who's name i can never remember discusses when they introduced the empress on screen). though it does add a fun bit of drama to the story, we can take solace that at least this case is fictional!

Young concubine doesnt mean always Naive there is story about certain girl named Wu Zetian, she get sent by her family after being educated into Forbiden city at prime age of around 13 She was described as Briliant Genious, Competent and smart. eventualy the Emperor and Crown Prince was awed by her exelence - and she get promoted to concunbine at age 14, and since she also very competent, she promoted into Emperor personal state secertary - and for 10 years she get enough experience to conduct state affair to put long of her life story short. that like entire series of Game of Throne she eventualy ascend into Empress Herself at age of 40 - not as consort but as true official regent - the only Chinese Empress that managed to get that widespread acknowledgement, while also usher it into new golden age The world sure is diffrent back then, I cant help to think that a 14 year girl - that managed to attract Emperor attention and even manage State affair of an Empire is either Isekaied person or Monster Genious

some context: nobody except Maomao know about food allergy here, so all the ladies-in-waiting of Lishu believed she was just picky about food. since they kinda despise her for reason yet to be told, they swap her dish with Gyoukuyu's which has fish in it. at the same time, someone was trying to poison Lishu, and they naturally drugged the dish that was supposed for her but ended up with Maomao because of the swap. so there were at least 2 malicious parties involved, only one was some petty bully that could go very wrong, while the other was aiming for her head, but fortunately what they did nullified each other.

The lil girl concubine was the target. The poisoned dish was meant for her. But because her lady-in-waiting are bullies and they only know she hates fish/seafood, they want to make things uncomfortable for her and they switched the dishes so they give her the seafood. The lil girl concubine won't say what's wrong and would just eat the dishes because she's trying to hide her rash condition. Idk why she never told anyone, but she kept it to herself. So the bullies ended up saving the lil girl concubine by accident. The poisoned dish got swapped with Maomao's concubine so they could take the seafood dish. Then Maomao pointed out to the lil girl's maid-in-waiting of the concubine's allergies of foods she cannot eat because they are essentially poison to her. Maomao didnt disclose to them that the poison was meant for the lil girl concubine, that's something that Jinchin would have to investigate more. All Maomao can do is tell the lil girl concubine's ladies to feed her food that won't cause her body to go an allergic reaction

Some people get confused about what was going on; two different plots targeting Lishu. First, someone poisoned food intended for Lishu; we don't know who or why yet at this point in the anime. However Lishu's lady-in-waiting, wanting to "teacher her a lesson" about being a "picky eater" swapped Lishu's and Gyoukyou's food, so Lishu would have to eat the food she was "picky" about. She may have accidentally saved Lishu's life, but her actions could constitute a poisoning attempt, she could have possibly been killed or imprisoned for putting her mistress' life at risk. But since it was out of ignorance rather then genuine malice, Maomao did her best to keep it covered up, instead opting to clarify the dangers involved so she wouldn't do it again.

A note about Lishu being a concubine or wife at a young age- it was almost certainly a political situation, because such marriages were used to excuse the wives/concubines being essentially political pawns or prisoners, more often than not being used for the purpose of strengthening bonds between families of royal or noble bloodlines, or similar associations (even merchant and military families have married together historically for improving relations or consolidating businesses).

Like your reaction videos and so far your observations and comments are very insightful. Not sure if your qualifications but your comments on various medical facts like treatment of allergy in this episode was very nice and cool of you. Special blessings to you for stating the emergency number for allergic reactions, I am sure and pray it will be helpful to someone. One question to you, can somebody be suddenly allergic to something that he/she wasn’t allergic to previously? I think I saw in another anime where a little girl was eating bread and butter, and despite eating wait it her whole life, suddenly experienced a reaction. Not sure if that is grounded in reality. Also the name of the emperor’s mother isn’t Dowager. Dowager is a title which normally means royal mother of the current emperor, which traditionally they exercised a lot of influence directly or indirectly. So she is an Empress Dowager by title, not Dowager as in her name

I’m pretty sure the esophagus being harmed by the acid regurgitation is less harmful than the effects of the body absorbing cleaning products. Medical intervention is often founded on the principle of “does the benefit of doing this outweigh its costs?” Yes, throwing up is harmful for the body but it’s less harmful than getting sick from chemicals your body can’t tolerate without the side effect of serious illness, disability, or death. We do it naturally for a reason.
@TheLordTash
@TheLordTash 9 месяцев назад
@@grapeicies It depends on the cleaning product. Ammonia, for example, is something the body can filter pretty easily in low amounts, so it's usually safer to just dilute it and let it pass if it's ingested. It's also SUPER acidic so the bigger issue (in small amounts) is it burning your organs.

The taster and the other ladies did not know about allergies so thought she was just being picky but wanted to bully her in what they thought was harmless. The taster was already shaken up because the soup was poisoned and she narrowly escaped death but there is also now the fear instilled that if she knows about the allergy and knowingly feeds it to Lishu from this point on, she can effectively be implicated as an assassin and be executed so in this aspect the bullying regarding food will stop if they don’t want to be charged for treason.

You missed something! The implication here is that the previous Emperor (current emperor’s father) was a pedophile and took Lishu in as a child bride. When he died, Lishu left the palace-but because she had already been “used” she likely would have gone back to a life with no potential future. I assume the Emperor took her in again as a high ranking concubine out of guilt or benevolence, because at least she would be living a materially good life (I’d rather be crying in a Mercedes).

Okay, confused over Lishu, given the current emperor could have been aware of her allergies. He’s been around her from the previous emperor, so to me he’d be aware of things she might not be able to eat. However I’m also curious if the reason why Lishu is there is to prevent harm to come to her or something given we know he’s not interested in those who are young. *Edit* Anyone wondering I’m talking about if the emperor was aware of her allergies given he was around her as the crown prince and would have heard about it and used that knowledge/information if need be. Given how Maomao explained allergies though I’m not sure how knowledgeable people are about them. She had to point out it’s a good that cannot be eaten by a person as it’s comparable to that person as poisoning them. Secondly. Is Lishu back because we all know the emperor’s tastes aren’t flower buds but mature/ripe flowers. Lishu isn’t. Likewise wouldn’t her clan have sent someone more to the emperor’s tastes, compared to those not in his tastes at all. So. Therefore given we know she was the target is she there for protection and the emperor took her in due to that reason. That’s what I’m wondering.
@KOkami03
@KOkami03 9 месяцев назад
As other have explained, Lishu's food taster swapped Lishu's food with Gyokuyou's. That's why the dish Maomao tasted had jellyfish instead of mackerel. The taster did that because she thought Lishu was just "picky" and refuses to eat fish, and decided to "teach her a lesson" hence why she had that little freak out when Maomao explained how allergies work. Because Lishu is both underage (so the Emperor doesn't pay her any night time visits) and was also the previous Emperor's concubine, her attendants basically think they can treat her like shit and have zero respect for her. Poor thing, first a paedo wanted to get his hands on her, and now she's got a bunch of bullying bitches for her personal staff.
@Fujoshi1412
@Fujoshi1412 9 месяцев назад
@@KOkami03um? Literally none of that is what I’m talking about. I’m well aware of everything you’ve mentioned. My first one was is the emperor aware of her allergies? Yes he paid no attention to her now. But before he was emperor he was around her as the crown prince. He’d have been aware of her ‘picky’ food habits mostly for political reasons. Likewise my second one wasn’t about the previous emperors sick tastes. We all know he likes flower buds compared the to current emperor who seems to like blooming flowers or mature fruit? Not sure which one is the analogy but you get the idea. We know that she is the farthest type from his tastes. Likewise she was the previous emperor’s concubine and left after his death. So…how is she back? Her clan would likely have preferred to send someone closer to the emperor’s tastes then insult him with someone who’d have been around him from his time as crown prince but also a former concubine of his fathers. So. Is she there for protection? Did the emperor accept her knowing she’s in some trouble. It could be the case given we know she was the actual target. That’s what I’m getting at.

Lots of emperors in Ancient China had super young concubines. Usually it was when a family wanted favor from the emperor, so during a selection period in the year, they sent whoever they could live without; usually being children who had barely any merit, as normally they weren't allowed to marry, but were at least healthy enough to possibly become concubines. Though, usually, the children didn't get selected due to not knowing needed skills of the time, like embroidery or y'know being mature enough to even have children. But some emperors were just gross and chose children like weirdos and didn't wait until they were at least old enough to handle sex Also I have personal experience with mild anaphylaxis. Mine isn't so bad that my throat entirely closes up, but before my doctor prescribed me a strong allergy medication for it, I could barely go outside since my main allergen is almost any type of pollen. If someone intentionally tried to make me go outside without my meds, I'd kick their goddamn ass myself out the door!

It's actually interesting how this episode ties to COVID. Because allergic reaction happens when your body treats something pretty harmless as a serious threat. This is actually your own immune system destroying the body by mistake. Same thing happened sometimes in COVID-19. Most cases were easy, but sometimes your own body overreacted and damaged lungs as a result. Essentially in most cases it wasn't really COVID that killed those people. Their own immune system reacted too strongly, leading to their deaths. And before you say I don't know what I'm talking about and COVID was harmless - *COVID-19 KILLED MY MOM.* She was stronger than me. But she didn't take the vaccine. As a result I never even got COVID and despite having very weak immune4 system I'm fine. And she'd dead now. So learn something from that. Well, luckily we're past that now. COVID evolved just like most other viruses. It became less deadly because a deadly virus kills victims before it can spread and therefore nature favors weaker versions. So don't get intimidated if news of COVID start to spread now. It no longer matters how many people get infected because the virus is now too weak to seriously harm anyone. But you can always make money by constantly talking about this many people getting sick or something like that without really telling people anything useful. Which is what some media are doing - and this is why you get people who swing the other way and refuse to take vaccines. I mean yeah, you can be fine without vaccine. But what about people like me? People who have weak immune system and can easily die from a virus that cannot harm *YOU?* That's what this is about. If you don't care what happens to people around you - what are you even doing in a society anyway? The society cannot function if most people don't care. The truth is COVID was never as bad as it seemed in TV. But was never harmless either. It's a virus that's dangerous in one specific scenario. But I never heard that in the TV. And most people to this very day doesn't know what the real danger was. Because instead of telling that the media were scaring people to death. Because this is how they make money. The TV can always tell you that this happened or that happened. It will never tell you however *HOW OFTEN* that happens. You see in TV theft, murder and other things. You never see the good stuff. So be aware of that and don't base your opinions just on how bad things look in the TV. The TV can't make money on good and sensible stuff so obviously it won't show you any.

While this show does portray some rather messed-up shit (see: the previous emperor, at this point, being heavily implied to be a pedophile), it thankfully realizes the view a modern audience would take on it all, and instead of just shrugging and saying "it's how it was back then" while associating characters with all that stuff, it only actually associates them with it when it's _supposed_ to be a mark against them.
