Opioids are centrally acting analgesics that can produce inhibitory response on CNS as well as on the respiratory system but interestingly they can also produce few of the stimulatory actions at few of the organs.

Withdrawal effects are coupled with many mechanisms. One of them is directly related with opioid action where withdrawal of opioids produce quite opposite actions of opioids. For example, diarrhea, mydriasis, insomnia are withdrawal effects quite opposite to constipation, miosis and sedation produced by opioids. Other symptoms like anxiety, yawning, piloerection are somewhat related to activation of sympathetic system.
