Many take the word "pharmakeia" from Revelation 18:23 and suggest John is having a vision of modern medicine, vitamins, and supplements. What happens when we use this hermeneutic to interpret other scriptures in the Bible?
Pharmakeia is the Greek word meaning "sorcery" and that is the context when it is used in Revelation 18 as well as in the Greek Old Testament. Because pharmakeia is where we get the word pharmacy, many subscribe to interpreting pharmakeia in the Book of Revelation as pertaining to John having a vision of pharmaceuticals, vitamins, and life-saving medications such as insulin, being associated with the mark of the beast. The problem with this hermeneutic is it quickly turns in the Bible into a farce when used elsewhere in the text.
