A true master of the tenor sax with a deep spiritual focus. By far he is the greatest disciple of John Coltrane's.

And vice versa, Like Kahil ElZabar said “Coltrane reworked his sound after starting to play with Pharaoh, but Pharaoh always had that sound, he came with it”

Me, too. At age 17, saw him in NYC at Carnegie Hall in March 1975, between the sets of Alice Coltrane and Rahsaan Roland Kirk (what a concert! -- became a jazz head, not deadhead, thereafter), and then at The Village Vanguard where I recall nursing a couple of beers through three sets (18 year old drinking age at the time). Went on to see him at all three Yoshi's venues in Bay Area (once with John Hicks and Leon Thomas at original Yoshi's and the last time took my kids and ex to an afternoon matinee show at the SF Yoshi's, w/ Roy Hargrove). Most amazing, I sat nearly at his feet on the floor of Grace Cathedral, with back against divider in front of first pew (still can't believe they let me stay there) as he soared with William Henderson on piano in his first Grace Cathedral concert -- the acoustics in there were amazing. Blessed are all of us who experienced his grace and power! Rest in Peace Pharoah Sanders, While Stirring Up the Heavens With Sound Vibrations!

A true master, the Great Pharoah Sanders! Blessed to have been there on this date at Yoshi's in Oakland. Sherman Ferguson was also just incredible on drums. Thank you so much for posting this!

Yes, my organization, the Tennessee Valley Jazz Society-Huntsville, presented the great Ron Carter for our 34th Annual Jazz-N-June event. Brother Pharoah was my next project to present that I had planned over 6 years ago, but was unable to bring this great man to Alabama. Yes, Peace and Love to you and Pharoah Sanders!

I don't play Sax, but I sing, sometimes with a jazz band and plan to record when the lock down is over. I hear and understanding what you're saying. Perhaps I'm a over demanding listener, like most all of his fans,it's our inspiration and at times we're analytical. I mean no harm or disrespect to the musical giant!

There's no doubt he's a master craftsman of the Sax but sometimes I find him too avant-garde. When ever he plays straight ahead jazz it's fascinating and mind blowing in his tone, colour, phrasing and depth to my ears.
@RASTAxSKATE
@RASTAxSKATE 3 года назад
Do you play? Just curious, no harm intended. I can agree in some ways, but when I'm playing my sax in a group situation similar to this concerts set up, there is always a climax or culmination so to speak. Pharoah does come from a "spiritual lineage" of saxophone players, and the screaming sax is supposedly as close as they could get to a preacher laying they word out at church, in other words they are moving the spirit within you, I'm not Christian and I'm not sure if Pharoah or others like him would identify as one, but I definitely have an understanding of where Avant-Garde comes from, it doesn't only happen in jazz lol. These guys had a spiritual connection to God or the divinity of that which is and allowed the spirit to flow through the music they played. Much love.

It means nothing to call him "avant garde." All of what Pharaoh played was part of one thing. That is part of his genius.
@Huntington2012ify
@Huntington2012ify Год назад
@@julianwilson2926Wikipedia got the analogy wrong: Coltrane is the father, Sanders is the son and Charles Lloyd is the holy spirit. After that the angels are: Archie Shepp, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young and Stan Getz.

True spirit is never only “straight ahead “ . If you give your spirit freedom - it goes in all directions, what you may call “avant-garde”
