Wonderful vintage film! That is,PECS does not encourage but rather completely re-enforces the underlying core social-communicative deficits associated with ASD. It does NOT encourage true spontaneous pragmatic communication; rather it shackles and represses joint/social reciprocity and co-communication by not encouraging but entirely frustrating facial and bodily co-gesturing; joint reciprocity around simple pleasure engagement and two-way emotional problem solving with the use of non-verbal facial and bodily co-gesturing (the latter, which is one of the primary core deficits associated with ASD)! Also in direct conjunction with the latter would be the caregiver/therapist child rhythmicity of affective (social-emotional) verbal inflection, intonation, etc around two-way emotional problem solving and pleasure engagement.
Dear Professor T with apparent misfirings or synpatic compromises, Yes indeed RHYTHMICITY! That my dear Sir/Madam is the essence of dyadic child/primary cartegiver meaningful engagement. It is what help co-construct the basis, the foundation of synaptic patterning post utero. It is a truism (if you have the least scintillia of knowledge with regards to what constitutes Functional Emotional Development and the formation (integration) of sensory-affect-motor functioning in synchronization with executive (prefrontal cortex) functioning.
