OMG! the statement of Purpose i wrote and sent them 2 years ago admission made me smile a lot and got even more excited now.. Dear Casey, I just wanted to thank you for uploading this video because it was a great resource for the preparation of my very first PhD interview today. Some of your other videos also provide very helpful background information that make navigating through an academic career and applying for a PhD a bit easier.
I am preparing to get interviewed in a couple of weeks. It is a pre-determined funded project in proteomics with a little bit of Bioinformatics. I applied because I love the overall aim of the project. I have been reading up on instrumentations and methodologies in proteomics research to keep up to date and knowledgeable on the project topic. I have also re-read my CV and cover letter severally. I have drawn up an interview Q and A containing the most asked questions to practice with. I hope I have covered all bases in preparation for the interview.
Thank you for posting this. I watched before my interview last week and the interview panel has agreed to put me forward to the funding panel. This helped me to clarify how to answer the questions.
i am dying for the PhD program i applied in. willing to spend day and night in labs as much i can to learn the skills of life time and become great researcher. but i can not find words to tell them in interview. it is so frustrating. i am not extrovert and laughing while talking guy. but i am genuinely sincere about my PhD. it will be a ticket for me to enter the world of researchers. my interview will be in 3 weeks. 2024 is extremely important year of my life.

Just finished my 3rd interview. I am nervous due to fact I will be 59 years old if I get Fall 2024 PhD program admission. But, I will be optimistic. I believe that I am built for this. But, it is up to the Universities at this point. Thanks for inspring me.
When I was interviewed they mostly asked about my undergraduate research interest and what sorts question I was interested in as a graduate student. They admitted students as cohort and students select advisors after doing rotations.
I had PhD interview on Friday. I prepared for 'tell us a little something about yourself,' and 'what are you strengths and weaknesses?' But nope, I got super technical questions, threw me but I waffled and stumbled through it. I very much doubt I'll get the position. But I gave it a shot.

I think my question would be: What do you want to ask them? If you don't have an answer to that, then you probably don't need to contact them ahead of time. And I can't answer your other question, will vary greatly!
@@CaseyFieslerPhD Thanks Ma`am, I had the interview and didnt really went well, As they asked me questions on my thesis & which I havent been in touch lately, further I got nervous and bit tensed and some of the answers didnt came out even though I`ve known them really well. Is there any tip to keep calm & not get tense in the interview process?
@@nipunathalpage5673 I think the answer to that will be different for everyone. I would just recommend whatever method you use for calming yourself in any context. And interviewers certainly expect candidates to be nervous, and should not hold your nerves against you. Good luck to you!
Hi Casey, Thanks for your video it was really helpful. I have an interview in two days and I have to talk to 5 faculty members at one time! I saw in many videos that I should look at their research and come up with questions to ask them, but I am not sure if I should come up with questions for each professors... Would it be possible for you to give me some advice on how I should prepare in this case?
I think it’s a good idea to look them up so you know who they are and what you do, but no I don’t think you need to dig in as much. With that many interviewers any questions you ask would probably be more general, e.g. about the program. But they’ll probably have plenty of questions for you!
Casey your videos are beneficial! I really appreciate them. Either way, I have a question for you. Do supervisors look just for candidates with proven lab experience for lab-based programs? Or do they put above this the genuine passion and interest of the candidates in the research topics? Thanks in advance

I am applying for some PhD that after the interview select some candidates and ask them to write an assignment, consisting of reading selected articles, and a brief analysis of it. Thanks for your videos! I will have my first PhD interview soon, and they are really helpful. I would like to know what is the average acceptance rate after being interviewed. Also, is there an adviced dress code for an interview through Skype? Is it good to ask the committee when the results will be announced? :)
Good luck! Acceptance rates will be different for every program. And you can ask about when decisions will be made, though it doesn't really matter unless there's a reason - like if you have other offers or need to make plans. And you don't need to dress formally, but the same as you would for any job interview probably! Like, a nice shirt.

I have a couple of undergrad degrees in engineering and a MBA, but always wanted to go back to get a PhD. However, I do not want to quit my job just yet. I’m still in that mid career level, ~7yrs in industry, so I was thinking of doing a masters while working. Then maybe in 5-7yrs go back and get a PhD. How long would it take to get a PhD if I broke up coursework like this?
I'm not sure what you mean by breaking up coursework, but you should reach out to programs you're considering about whether they take part time students, and they can answer this question for you!

Do think when someone had a mistake in his statement of propous like forgetting to mention one of the criteria that he should talk about like forgetting to ralk about his strengths and weaknesses and than he reuploaded another one with an apology for forgetting that criteria with honesty do you think that will be considered positively or negatively on his acceptance for the phd program. That actually what happened to me when I applied into Colorado state university for this upcoming academic year
If it was re-uploaded before the deadline it's very possible they're never know you submitted another one? But I probably wouldn't stress about mistakes like that if you can't correct them.
I had my interview today and it was very short. they only asked me a few questions about my proposal (one prof had 5 questions and another only asked 3 questions). Do you think this is a bad sign? I am really worried now. :(

I can't think of any reason why that would be the case. Even if it wasn't allowed, I'm guessing the worst that would happen is that they don't read the last one.
@@CaseyFieslerPhD You can walk out of a PhD any day of the week. That's the easy part. OK, getting into a program takes a bit more work, but as somebody who went into physics from a "hobby" perspective (it was my passion, not a rational decision about my future job prospects), I found it rather easy to stick with it, even on the most difficult of days: physics was what I WANTED to do. It is exactly because it wasn't the result of a planned career program of mine that I managed to do what needed to be done to earn the title.
I don't know why people are sweating this so much. I applied for a PhD position twice and I got accepted twice and ultimately ended up rejecting one. I had no background in either astronomy or high energy physics (the two fields I applied for) at the time, but I had a very strong experimental physics background with six years as a paid research assistant in a major laboratory. I had a portfolio of successful experimental hardware designs that proved that I could build whatever experimental hardware was necessary to conduct the lines of research necessary for either position. That is really the key for someone to pick you: is there a good chance that you will deliver what the research requires? It doesn't matter whether that is theory, chemical lab bench skills or archeological field work. If you have a proven track record by the time you apply, then it's not very hard to convince the adviser to take a chance on you.
It's wonderful that you were so successful, but I don't think it's necessary to diminish the concerns of people who are worried. I was rejected from every PhD program I applied to the first time around.
@@CaseyFieslerPhD Could it be that you applied for the wrong PhD programs? If I had applied to a theoretical department, I would have been rejected to.
@@schmetterling4477 That isn't the point; the point is that it is completely reasonable for people to have anxiety. There is both a lot of competition (we reject tons of qualified applicants every year) and also there's a lot of privilege associated with some of the things that make a strong application, e.g. being a paid research assistant and other things that can easily point to a proven track record. Your credentials are wonderful but not something that everyone has the opportunity to do. I just think this is an important thing to keep in mind.
@@CaseyFieslerPhD I had anxiety, too. It just doesn't help and it is not even necessary in this case. That's my point. If you study physics for the love of it, then you will be fine, career wise. Physics is not a seasonal fad. None of the hard sciences are. Neither are medicine or any of the engineering disciplines or even the law, if that is what interests you. Being a lawyer is a bit more dicey because there are only so many bar positions per state, if I understand this correctly and a lawyer without bar does not have a whole lot of employment opportunities. And no, I was not even close to the top of my class. I almost failed a couple of my exams. I was very nervous during my final oral masters exam and got a few things mixed up. They sent me out of the room and then called me back in. One of the professors smiled and said "Well, young man, we can tell that you are not very good at memorizing textbook material. However, we both sense that you have a great passion for physics. We think that you will be able to contribute to the field if we let you pass.". And they did and then later I proved them right. I am simply telling you the lesson that I have learned during my life that is nearing its end: be passionate about something and things will happen. Maybe not exactly the things that you wanted when you were little, but good things will happen, nonetheless.
@@schmetterling4477 I've spoken to hundreds of PhD applicants, personally reviewed the applications of hundreds more, and I'm simply saying that suggesting that people are silly for worrying isn't helpful. It is true that things often work out, even if you aren't accepted into a PhD program, but also the playing field isn't even so people's worries are different.
In talking about research interests? I think you can be as long as you’re not too rigid. Or giving examples. The potential problem is that if it seems like you’re only willing to do one very specific thing there’s more of a chance they might not perceive that specific thing as a fit to their work.

entering grad school I saw in the first semester everyone fighting to get a 4/4 GPA but ofc there is always one subject that might get you a B even if you score the highest n get an A grade in your all other subs. The same happened to me and I got so worried because being in a non-EU country and aspiring to get admission in PhD on scholarship in an Eu country I thought that you need to have a perfect application with work experience and excellent grades and research articles. Is a CGPA of 3.8+ good enough for a competitive PhD application?

I just wanted to say thank you for all of your videos on PhD admissions. They've been VERY helpful in de-mystifying the process. I just did an interview on Wednesday (the program does rolling admissions for the following semester). A 30 min appointment via Zoom with the department chair and two other professors to determine goodness-of-fit. Honestly, I spent most of the time asking them questions about the program and their research. They did ask me the predictable questions ("Why a PhD?" "Why this university?" "What are your research interests?" and the follow-up, "explain more about your passion for research?"). Otherwise, it was a fairly informal process and after initial butterflies in the first few mins, I felt pretty comfortable about the interview. I should find out soon about acceptance or not. Like your PhD, I'm applying to only one program with a geographic constraint (need to get closer to family). We'll see! Thanks again!
