It's interesting watching your little springer work and the different ways of shooting across the world. I currently have seven springers (4 liver & white, 3 black & white ) ranging from 6 months to 13 years old which I use for picking up on a large driven shoot in the UK. This is more like a walked up day but also it's interesting to see that you don't take the hen birds. We will shoot hens until the end of the season here at which point any remaining ones are caught up for egg laying and rearing. Likewise we don't use semi autos unless it's pigeon or duck shooting, taking a semi auto on a driven day is seriously frowned upon and you'll see anything from antique side by side guns, black powder guns to newer over and unders. That said, I love see how other people shoot and work their dogs! Your little lad is a bit of a contrast to my lot when they are working, they are constantly in and out of the cover. The ground is very different too, I usually work mine in thick brambles and woodland with a little bit of open pasture. I hope you have plenty of fun years with your little dog and straight shooting. Great little Springer. Can't blame him for the missed retrieve. It dropped out of his view so he couldn't mark it and the wind wasn't cooperating to get the scent. That's where hand signals and commands really pay off. I just lost my Griffon of 13 years a few weeks ago. No greater bond then a hunter and his "Partner".
@@westerniowaoutdoors2353 You realize the day you bring a puppy home that "That" day will come. But you're never really prepared for it. Praise and pet them every chance you can, they're gone in just a moment.
Nice to see a springer doing such a fine job. But, most of the pointing breed videos I see have their dogs patterning close, flushing as the handler arrives and chasing after the flushed birds too??? Thank you for sharing and enjoy your springer!
Thanks for watching!! He’s young yet(9 months) and hasn’t quite mastered the steady point. Very Good dog overall but yes, sometimes chase’s after the flush. We’re working on that, with time he’ll be just fine! Thanks for watching, appreciate the support!!
@@westerniowaoutdoors2353 Don't instill issues you will need to overcome later. At 9 months he should be turning the corner. If you don't want him to chase, stop shooting at birds he flushes without him "hup"-ing. Get a plan in order and make it happen. He's too nice a pup...
@@shug2795 Exactly. I made the mistake of shooting the birds my young pointing dog bumped. Had to work hard to break that. He turned into a steady dog on wing and shot. Would hold a point forever til I flushed the bird. We hunted all across the country from Maine to South Dakota and down to Kansas. Loved hunting Grouse with him, but pheasant were in my backyard. Miss that guy.
I'm on my 5th springer and they really aren't retrievers. If you want a retrieve dog get a brown labrador and freeze yourself sitting in a duck blind for hours. Springers are bred to HUNT!
@@outdoorrn2980 Labs don't hunt though. They retrieve and that's it. 3 of my springers were decent at retrieve, but they would crunch the birds before giving them up. Only 1 of my dogs had a soft mouth on retrieve. We tried everything to get every one of them to not crunch, like putting pins in the dummy training dolls. Springers have an incredible tolerance for pain. Maybe you have a better training method but give this dude a break his dog was only 8mo old.
@@outdoorrn2980 I got really lucky with my second springer Jax. His dad was on the cover of Field and Stream two times. Jax killed every groundhog he ever saw in our back yard, (at least ten) and twice caught a pheasant before it could take off. My dad almost shot him because Jax jumped so high catching the flushed bird in his mouth! The only problem was he would destroy the birds on retrieve because he was a stone-cold killer.
