A playthrough of Namco's 1990 shoot 'em up for the Sega Genesis, Phelios.
Played through on the "advanced" level.
After the ending, at 38:25, I included all of the stage and boss descriptions that can be viewed only from the Options menu.
Phelios is seemingly one of the lesser known games that Namco ported from their System I and II arcade boards to the Sega Genesis. And like their other ports (Rolling Thunder 2, Marvel Land, Burning Force, etc.), it's very well done despite the heavy concessions made it scaling it down to the Genesis hardware.
It's a vertically-scrolling shoot 'em up with a bit of fantasy/mythology for color and flair. You play as Apollo, zipping around on a pegasus as you shoot at the bad guys with your swords... and your option pods. Yeah, and odd combination right there. You fight all sorts of monsters from Greek legend to save Artemis, the woman with laryngitis that gradually sheds her clothes while she's trapped behind a brick wall. It's all a fairly typical setup. Capcom's Legendary Wings says hello!
But there are a lot of really neat things going on in Phelios. Some of the stages - the first and third in particular have really cool background elements, and the first has a really neat sense of thematic cohesion between its enemies and the environment. The in-game presentation is really inconsistent, otherwise. Some stages are beyond dull with repetitive enemy patterns and featureless backdrops, and all of the impressive scaling effects from the arcade version are missing, but the enemy design is usually pretty cool, and the bosses are often novel interpretations of what they're meant to be based on. The music is nicely done as well. It's generally content to remain in the background, but it does feature a few memorable hooks that you'll find yourself humming the next day.
The cutscenes look great, and are probably among the most standout things to anyone who has played Phelios. Artemis shows up between each stage to encourage you, and the real kicker: garbled and unintelligible though they may be, she does so with digitized voice-overs of full sentences. There's a surprisingly amount of it included. In 1990, that was a huge deal! Also, boobs.
The gameplay itself is overall pretty good - there's nothing stand-out about it, but it's solid. You only need one button - you tap it to shoot and hold it to charge up for a larger attack - and that's it. You can pick up options, occasional weapon power-ups, and shot upgrades, and spend most of the game weaving in-and-out of waves of various baddies. Of course, following in the grand Namco tradition, it is quite difficult, no matter what the colorful, anime-inspired graphics want you to believe. Playing it on easy will only allow you to see the first four stages, and finishing on the normal level unlocks a higher difficulty. Normal is quite a stiff challenge already, but if you find the game on the easy side, rest assured, it becomes insanely demanding at the highest level.
I really like Phelios. It'll never get picked over RoboAleste or Thunderforce, and it wastes a lot of its potential, but it is a solid, old-school arcade shooter with some nice window dressing and a lot of charm. If you can get over the extreme inconsistencies in the presentation, you might just find a good time to be had in this first-gen Genesis cart. I did.

I remember my parents not buying me Mortal Kombat 2 because they thought it would give me nightmares and instead bought me this, I shut the game off soon as I saw Medusa's head and got traumatized. I then went to my friend's house the next day and played Mortal Kombat 2 and felt much better. What irony lmao

Lol I get you, it's hilarious parenting, similar to when they give underage kids the violent bible parts. Heck even Noah flood everybody and leave 2 of every type of animal to reproduce when females can be hard to tell 🤣 no way somebody wasn't extinct. And yes medusa and the Greeks can be violent. Ask wonder woman, even in kid friendly Diana, princess of Amazons, she freed sealed evil to win a race and that killed people.

I'd honestly rather play Phelios than MK 2. Phelios is actually challenging, while MK 2 can be cheesed into an easy as hell game. Plus Phelios has some mythology connection, despite Artemis and Apollo being brother and sister, and portrayed as lovers in this game.

@@Bloodreign1 Me and my group of friends were 90% Mortal Kombat fanatics and played against each other and bet matches for quarters/candy packs/gum sticks back in the day. I was the Scorpion player in my group, we had one guy who was a Sub Zero player and another who was Reptile, ironically one of my friend's sister only played Mileena and she was actually decent. We didn't really play the arcade mode to try and get to Shao Kahn. We played Shinobi 3/Sonic and a bunch of others if we wanted that.

Phelios isn't the best shoot 'em up you'll find on the Genesis, but it has a lot of nice little quirks and touches that make it a really likable game. And in 1990, who wasn't blown away by the fully-voiced cutscenes... even if you needed the subtitles to decipher what was being said?

When you remember that Artemis was known for being a virgin goddess, the cutscenes suddenly seem creepier. All the more since she clearly wasn't wearing a bra initially, then in later cutscenes is seen with a bra and and undies. Meaning, Typhon basically stripped her, presumably by burning off her clothes, as she was helpless and defenselessly chained to the wall. Then he put her in what was basically a suggestive, humiliating slave outfit, essentially telling her she was his plaything. He did all this knowing Artemis valued her virginity. What. A. Creep. Not out of place for Greek myths though, truth be told.
@alxxz
@alxxz 3 года назад
Hhmm... not sure if Artemis was a virgin really, I know Athena definitely was, hence the name of the temple on the Acropolis of Athens dedicated to her "Parthenon / παρθενών / παρθενώνας" literally meaning "Virgin" in Greek and being the patron goddess of the city and all.

@@alxxz If memory serves, there were 3 virgin goddesses: Artemis, Pallas Athena, and I believe Hestia. Artemis' whole shtick was she was so busy hunting that she didn't care much for love. Also, because she was known to be such a good huntress, I feel that the mythological Artemis would not have been captured this easily and would have very likely killed Typhon herself. In fact I recall Apollo being less proficient at weapons than her.

The Japanese sure did love making media out of those aforementioned mythologies back in the late '80s/early '90s with their own spins on them (i.e. Saint Seiya, Sailor Moon, the NES version of Strider, to name a few IPs). @Bloodreign1
@Bloodreign1 Год назад
No one's ever said that, but a lot of the ones on SNES are of pretty damned fine quality, that is if you skip stuff like D Force, or Blazeon (the arcade version at least is cool). The Genesis had some great shmups, this is sadly not top tier due to all the cuts made to fit it onto a Genesis cart, Thunder Force IV takes the top honors for best Genesis shmup, and it's not even close. Alas, the Genesis had no Twinbee, no Gradius, no Parodius, no R-Type, for me those are my top shooters, and the SNES got them, especially Parodius, with 3 games (Twinbee did get a second SNES/SFC game, but it's a good platformer), and 2 R-Type titles (only the SMS got an R-Type, thanks to Compile). Sega would not see a Twinbee, a Gradius, or a Parodius till the Saturn, I got them all for the console, and I am thankful to have them.

Yeah, a port that had no cool scaling sprites, or background rotation seen in the arcade version. Not to mention the absolute low quality sound samples the Genesis tended to push out. The SNES would've been able to keep the scaling, and at least the voices would've sounded clearer. Marvel Land and Burning Force also shared similar fates, though neither one had voice samples to have to tone down considerably, so they got off a bit more lucky. In Marvel Land's case, Namco added more content, but the scaling effects, unable to be done by the Genesis unless in software, and no way in hell was Namco going to put in the effort to try and do them. To be honest, while this version is fun to play, it is stripped down far, far too much.

@Prizrak-hv6qk
@Prizrak-hv6qk 4 года назад
In theory, you are right. However, the SNES would have probably choked on it. The developers of Space Megaforce had to use all kinds of tricks to implement things like scaling and rotation without things slowing down to a crawl, even though it's very slow moving for a Compile shooter and has very simplistic and small sprites compared to their other games (e.g.: MUSHA). Now, the Sega CD could've done Phelious justice. Too bad it was so rarely used to the full potential of its 11 MHz M68000 with custom sprite and background scaling and rotation graphics hardware.
@Bloodreign1
@Bloodreign1 Год назад
@@Prizrak-hv6qk FastROM might've been the answer, a lot of developers went with the cheaper SlowROM, and that's where the slowdown would come into play. This isn't a bullet hell shooter either, and there isn't a boatload of sprites on the screen, not even the arcade version, the SNES would've been able to handle it. I mean Cosmo Gang the Video has a load of sprites onscreen at one time, no slowdown at all, and the pace of the game is quite fast. That game is from Namco.
