in my city (not gonna give away where I'm at don't even try phil) we talk all the time about the day that he finally comes. We're a city of over a million with multiple 6 mile+ climbs so the day will come.
rip everyone's koms... to be fair it would be interesting because UK hill climbs are short and steep which doesn't seem to be Phils speciality. It's more of a hill sprint.
I think Phil probably has a great deal of 'respect' for the current UK hill climb champ, Ed Laverack. In any case, Phil's never got anywhere close to Ed's peak VAM. Take a look at Ed's channel. You might quickly revise your opinion re Phil's chances, if you did. But it would be fun to find out for real, I agree. The virus had made all these things hypothetical though.
@@zacandrijasevich4986 The only thing we don't know with Ed is whether he could produce that form at the end of a stage in the middle of a major stage race with big hills in it, assuming the team were riding for him. Like you say, when fresh, he's as good as anyone in the world. It's a terrible shame we won't see his planned trip to Alpe d'Huez happen this year, where he would have done an ITT as part of La Marmotte. And I'd tipped him for a course record for the Taiwan KOM (yes, faster than Nibali). Possible. I hate to use Zwift in this context, but still, it seems Ed may have set the fastest legitimate time ever up the Alpe du Zwift, although it's impossible to be sure given how overrun with bots, jokers, goons and clowns Zwift has become and its total inability to filter them out.
@@winstoncat6785 Yep exactly although he says he performs a lot better when he is tired and for that reason doesn't do well in one day races even if course did suit. Ironically enough he is doing a livestream at the minute replicating the exact stage 15 of TDF where Simon Yates one the stage even better is the fact that he has the same weight and ftp as him!
Phil - For years, my friends have left cold, northern flatlands for a N Georgia “training camp.” Folks w/ non-cycling jobs who live for that week. This year, no trip. Your video means a lot. I’ll say thx by putting some of that savings to No Kid Hungry.
He's at church :) .... i feel the same way about Sunday riding after countless Sundays of my youth wasted in actual church. God is nature, bein out in it on Sunday is the way to be.
Phil, I just wanted to say that this brings back so many Appalachian trail memories for ME personally from my hike in 2011... thanks. I have seen many of those places. Great video... thanks for sharing.
Try riding in Gilmer, Pickens and Murray counties further west in Georgia. Fort Mountain is a tough 7 mile climb from Chatsworth and Burnt Mountain can be climbed from 3 directions. West Pickens is beautiful. The traffic in this area is way less than gaps.
Okay and just like that you've made me feel better about my temporary move to ATL. I'm definitely going to miss the LA climbs, but looks like GA's gonna keep me satisfied until we return.
The wife and I love riding up there. As Floridians, we never have a chance to ride any true hills or mountains, and that area during the fall is absolutely breathtaking. Glad you had help from your folks with all that fog.
I live in Holland, Michigan. It is largely as flat as you would expect based on the name of the town. But we do have some neighborhoods built up in the sand dunes with some intense hills (that, admittedly, would probably take you only 30-45 seconds each...)
Nice ride up Brasstown man that wall is something else but you should have started at the base of the climb at the intersection of Richard Russell and 180 then hit all of jacks and to the very top of Brasstown Bald you would be etched in history forever either way nice ride, I’m coming for ya tho I’m coming for ya gives me something to shot for
Our team used to stay in Helen on our training camps. On Brasstown day I would go over the route for the day. Guys knew BB was tough so when I would tell them we had to climb Unicoi and the Jack's b4 we would get to BB they would ask "Why do we have to climb those before BB?" "Uhh, because it is in the next valley over. Would you rather climb Hogpen first?" That shut them up pretty quickly.
@@roccoranallo4027 absolutely agree that Hogpen is far tougher north to south than s to n. I laid out a week's worth of rtes. I always made sure we catch each climb at some point in both directions at least once.
Bill Champion sweet!! If you ever back up here let me know I’d like to hop one your wheel man, this is really one of Phil’s best videos and what I think alot of people overlook is that he says he was semi-pro rider till he would come up here and he says these mountains turned him into a pro that’s epic right there and I’m just thankful I can ride these hills man
Great video Phil! I was hoping you would take Unicoi from the south side. Its long but has a challenging aspect to it with the turns about mid way through.
Nice Phil! Sorry the weather was so poor for you on that day. Brasstown Bald brings back great memories of watching the Tour De Georgia stage finish there every year. The average may be 11% but the one section before the parking lot is hard to even walk up. The section above the parking lot they used to race up is worse. Insanely steep!
Man, this Sunday was supposed to be the Tour of Georgia for Team Type 1, sadly cancelled. Those gaps are so fun, the descents are unreal and make it worth it. Coming from South FLAT Florida, it's a workout.
It's funny seeing how foggy it was because a couple friends and I were at Mt Cheaha, Alabama this day and it was ridiculously foggy. We were pretty floored to see you destroyed North Georgia after the ride. BTW, time to go to Cheaha Alabama, Phil...
Yes, Brasstown Bald is a serious climb! During the Tour de Georgia (should have used 'of') I remember Fast Freddie Rodriguez stopping to stretch in the middle of the climb (I have photos) and I remember pushing Mario Cipollini (and a bunch of other riders not in contention for the win) up the steep parts. Mario had so many people pushing him I had to run alongside until a fat guy ran out of breath so I could help.
The difference between a pro (or former pro) and an average cyclist id unbelievable! One of those rides alone would have wiped me out and I wouldn't have gotten anywhere near a KOM.
Thanks Phil for the new viewing. Looked some smooth Tarmac but weather was not good. I really appreciate you putting these out, it's a slice of normality....if watching a man cycle uphill is normal? Either way I like it. Stay safe and everything. Chas.
Georgia’s gotta have good pavement to keep all the skeletons underground that are buried in the land lol. One crack form’s and it’s game over! 😂 Great video, Phil. Making me want to travel there and do that 6 gap century ride!
haha, Phil sounds legit annoyed AF at 4:35. How much do wet road and rain slow you down? I can't imagine just getting out of a van and going max effort, and doing that all day long. Pretty sick stuff all in the name of entertainment/just cuz. I respect that level of twisted.
It’s one thing to do a monster effort. But to do it and then take a break sitting in the car and do it over and over. The first few minutes of warming back up must hurt nearly as bad as the KOM attempt!
Phil I hope you get to hit Chattanooga like you originally planned. I saw you race Nationals there, and would like to know you got a few of the KOMs. Do you know which ones you would go for in the Chattanooga area?
Naaman Story this would be a fun route to plan. Start on Lookout with Burkhalter Gap and Ochs Highway before moving over to the back of Raccoon Mountain. End on Signal with Robert’s Mill and/or the W-Road.
how does the cbd oil help during a ride? would like to know the thought process and science. i now it would be good for recovery. how about during a ride?
Take care of your parents, they look like real nice people. And, how come Georgia can afford those gorgeous roads and we, here in California, are stuck with the crap we have? Rhetorical question.
Phil, you lived in Athens? Did you ever participate in Twilight crit downtown that happens every spring? It's an awesome event. I live in athens currently
That is the fun part, isn't it? The first time we broke the law there was no one there but a couple of locals. They saw us looking at it and told us go, there is no one here. The second time a ranger popped out of the overlook and told me "Turn around now. Turn all of your buddies around on your way down. Or I will take you down to the bottom myself." See ya, have a good day Mr Ranger.
Man I don’t know if you noticed but I did 5 in a day...also you’re watching it on RU-vid, which means I stopped to setup and film stuff because that’s a point. But drive out there and beat my time be my guest
