This is a Philip Bailey song from his 1984 album Chinese Wall which Phil Collins produced and played drums on. The song is written by Bailey, Collins and basist Nathan East! It's a banger!
Phil had a relationship with EW&F as he used their horn section on his solo albums/tours. Around this time Phil was, besides his solo work & Genesis, was playing on & touring with many artists including Robert Plant and Eric Clapton.
My Favorite Duet..Phil Collins ever participated in. Phil Bailey is such an amazing Vocalist and their voices together.. are so beautiful. So grateful for this song.
Phil collins is the drummer on this track as with all his songs on his albums. One the best drummers on the planet. Hes 70 years old now. His Son is his drummer in his concerts now also incredible drummer!!
Although this really is a Phillip Bailey song that Phil Collins only popped in to duet on, this really is a Phil Collins style of song. He is full of alot of energy. Wait til you hear more of him, you'll see what I mean hehehe Other Phil songs to react to are: You Can't Hurry Love Sussudio Don't Lose My Number One More Night Love Don't Come Easy Ps I loved that you mentioned that you were created, yes you indeed were. As we all were, wonderfully created
Philip Bailey is also a member of Earth Wind and Fire. A great song of Earth Wind and Fire is Shining Star, a groovy, funky number from the seventies, a disco hit in these days..
Phil Collins was greatly influenced by R&B for both his drumming and also his sound. He is a musician's musician on drums and does a huge variety of styles. Another couple upbeat '60s/'70s style tunes by him are 'Something Happened on the Way to Heaven' and 'Two Hearts' which was featured in the movie 'Buster' from 1988, about a train robbery in the '60s (and Collins playing the lead character). Yeah, he can act too!
Yeah, most boomers grew up with music from the 60s, 70s & 80s. Because we lived it easy for us to identify the times with the music. Music then was more varied even within the genres. Groups were influenced and borrowed from each other, but made the sounds their own. Unique as you said. Unlike today, my younger nieces and nephews complain that artists want to sound like each other. Also back in the day, groups had to keep things music fresh and new. Too much competition with all that talent back then, you'd better come up with something creative and different if you wanted to get it played on the radio.
This song is from the mid-80s. Maybe it's that aggressive drumming, but this song would always make me dance HARD when it would come on, back when I would go "clubbing." Good times!
Oh my Chod, thank you for doing one of my very favorite duets, If you can you should check out the video of them making this song. It shows the fun and respect they have for each other. Phil Collins has many different styles and moods to his songs depending on the reason for the song, some are personal some are to open your eyes to a situation or for a movie. Thanks for this.
Too bad you didn't do the video, it's cool. But technically this is a Philip Bailey song featuring Phil Collins. But it is usually listed as Phil Collins and Philip Bailey.
@Zazu Pitts Probably true. The reason I said it's a Philip Bailey song is that it isn't on a Phil Collins album, it is on Philip Bailey's album. But I also think of it as a Collins/Bailey song.
@@johnfoster5295 Minor correction. It was originally released on Phillip Bailey’s Chinese Wall album (which Phil Collins produced). It was later released on one of Phil’s compilation albums.
This is a great melding of Phillip Bailey’s R&B style with a lot of hallmarks of Phil Collins’ playing. Phil Collins co-wrote this song with Phillip Bailey and Nathan East. He also produced it and played drums on it, The heavy, gated drums (which are insane on this song) and odd time changes are hallmarks of Phil Collins’ style. I’m waiting for reactions to I Don’t Care Anymore (this live version is awesome m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zZ3GA6dazTA.html) and Against All Odds (classic 80s power ballad - just don’t do the Live Aid version, which is just Phil on piano and doesn’t have the same power as versions with the drums). Also, check out some of Phil Collins’ stuff with Genesis. Completely different sounds. There are so many songs there - Mama (check out this live version from 1987 m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WcfuvgQJ1pY.html), That’s All, Tonight Tonight Tonight, Land of Confusion, In Too Deep, Home By the Sea/Second Home By the Sea (here’s a great live version ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-P7Ko79vytWA.html), Dance on Volcano, and Ripples - just for starters.
In the 80s, some artists changed producers for each album so that each album had a different sound. INXS did this for almost every album, at least in their earlier years. The Swing (83) Listen Like Thieves (86) and Kick (88) were all very different sounds.
This was a song Phil did With Philip Baily. It was on Baily's album ... Phil Collins on his own is wonderful. Phil Collins is Genesis thou.. 40+ years........ The guys went out on their own 2. I have suggested Drum/duet Los Endos... Phil lead vocal, Drums Chester Thomson on, Drums 2.... Just Amazing . Tony Banks Keyboard, Mike Rutherford Guitar. It's Phil, Tony Mike on album covers. Chester and Daryl Stumer On guitar, Joined them live... The rabbit hole is just an awesome ride to Mastery.... Cheers
I see that people are saying this song was a Phillip Bailey song but the song was on both their solo albums at the time. Not just Bailey's album. Yes that is Phil on drums. He also played drums on Robert Plants first 2 solo albums and on Eric Claptons Bad Love AND Frieda's (from Abba) There's Something Going On which he also produced.
If you want to see another side of Phil Collins react to I wish it would rain down. Watch the official video if you can, it’s funny. Plus you have Eric Clapton playing guitar.
In the 80s, we heard Phil's wonderful Gretsch concert tom kit pop up on all kinds of songs. Instantly recognizable. In studio, he played drums on songs he also sang on, but now and then at shows he played while singing. That's why he had Bill Bruford (right after Peter Gabriel left Genesis) and Chester Thompson playing kit while he was out front. Then Phil would sit down and play some amazing stunt drums solo or with Chester. Check out live Genesis to see what that man can do.
I'm probably teaching Grandma to suck eggs but...Phil Collins was Drummer with Genesis (Prog Rock), when Peter Gabriel left he became the lead singer/drummer. This was one of many Collab's he's had over the years, such a versatile musician. Keep up the great reviews, love them!
Technically, this is a Phillip Bailey song, co-written and produced by Phil Collins, as well as sung as a duet. As for his sound, you have to remember to separate Collin's work with Genesis, more rock and prog, and his solo work, more pop. Bailey, on whose album this song appeared (which Collins produced) is one of the lead singers of Earth, Wind and Fire. So you're not entirely wrong with your appraisal of the song. It's a post-disco, synth rock song from 1985, thru and thru, but the R&B vocals scream late 1970s Earth, Wind, and FIre. A great song, with Collins on lead, is his song with Genesis - "That's All."
This is really a Phillip Bailey song, as it was from his, 'Chinese Wall', album. However, because Phil Collins had a lot to do with the production, it tends to be on his compilations. Great song, though, that incapsulates the mid 80's perfectly. A great time to be a teenager! I should know..! 😁
You should check out Genesis live at Wembley stadium 1987. 'Abacab', 'The Brazilian' and 'Domino' are amazing, with Phil in fine form on vocals/drums and Chester Thomas on drums as well. As for Phil solo, try 'Take Me Home' live version, with Chester Thomas on drums.
I really enjoy your reactions. I’m glad that you save your comments to the end rather than making unnecessary comments and/or dumb sounds during the songs like some of the other reactors on RU-vid. Keep up the good work!
This song was released in 1985. Every time you react to Phil Collins I think of Lionel Richie. I think's it is because they both had songs and for movies. I liked the music videos and the songs very much. Too bad you hadn’t reacted with the video, it’s actually pretty good. You should consider doing a reaction to Phil’s huge 80s song “Sussudio” and another great song from the same album called “Don’t Lose My Number”
See if you agree that some of the sound Phil Collins had in his solo career came out of his stint with Genesis. 'That's All' Genesis - That's All (Official Music Video) - RU-vid
Wow, Chod...I’ve been with you almost from the beginning I think...I just looked back at your In the Air Tonight reaction from about four months ago, and I just want to say that MY GOD you have grown as a reactor! I could not be I couldn’t believe I was watching the same guy that I’ve come to appreciate and like for your calm, kinda laid back vibe. You acted like you were on speed or 10 cups of coffee....talking constantly. I was so surprised. Thank God you calmed down! 😁. I almost wish you would redo that reaction because it’s not representative of who you are now and could turn some folks off if it’s their first experience with you. You made a remark about the old guy praying’ ‘cause he got his eyes closed. That was Lee Sklar...,and I actually LOVE his face in that shot.....he is so obviously totally in the vibe. I’m so glad that you got more chill! 🤗😁
Kudos to Phillip Bailey. He’s obviously a more gifted singer. I’m just amazed though how well Collins pulls off his part. It also shows a humbleness that such a huge musical giant will give up the lead verses of the song. Still, everything comes down to the genius of his songwriting.
Loving this series of yours with Phil. If yer taking any requests, please try Take Me Home. And if you're doing some of his Genesis stuff, Follow You Follow Me. -cheers and keep doing what yer doing :)
Quick name 2 drummers that were lead singers! Phil Collins and Don Henley (Eagles). I saw where this is one of the toughest things to do (drums & lead vocals). As a drummer, do you find that true? I suspect it is, as there are so few good at it! :)
Reaction Request (Serious) Todd Rundgren from album Second Wind Song 'Public Servant' and the rest of that album and the rest of Todd's discography...you're young, and got plenty of time.
To see yet another side of Phil Collins, you should react to some of his work with Genesis. Home By The Sea is one that I think you would like because of the keyboards and Phil on the drums. It is long, but worth it. This live version is great. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MOb9Ubu8f3U.html
The musical arrangement, and especially the guitar solo, is definitely not 70's. The closest thing to 70's here, is Philip Bailey's falsetto. You need to have either lived in those eras, or be a musician who performs mainly 70's and 80's covers to know the difference.
You’ve got to stop with the “i think this is a 70s song”. If the snare drum sounds crisp, if you can hear keyboards that sound more ‘synthy’ than ‘organ’ then 9/10 its mid 80s👊🏻
