Many years ago? As a matter of fact Genesis retired on 26.03.2022, when they’d played their very last concert in London. That’s not so long ago. After his return in 2007 Phil remained a band member.
I don’t think people understand that all the members of Genesis had solo careers at the same time they were members of Genesis. They never left, just slipped in and out. Phil had the best, most successful, solo career, but the other members went solo, too.
OMG, Phil Collins is one of the greatest drummers. I have all of the Genesis record slbums. I feel so bad he is so sick. Bless you, Phil! You're still #1 in my books. ❤❤❤
My dad taped together a bunch of plant pots and cut down some drumsticks for me when I was 2 and a bit years old for that exact reason. One of my earliest memories.
When you gasped and said “I love that guitarist”: That’s the legendary Leland Sklar, top-tier LA studio and touring bassist for the past 54 years. Still touring and working on albums. And, btw, a top-tier human being and a very good friend of Phil Collins. And a dead ringer for Gandalf! 😏✌️
@@alundavies1016 yup…..you should put that in the main thread……not just to me. I’ve been a sub since 2020……and in his Clubhouse on the Flatfive platform. So yeah, I’m a FAN! 😁
Phil was the drummer for Genesis, a progressive rock band. When their lead singer Peter Gabriel went solo they searched a long time for a replacement only to find they had a great one, Phil, already in the band. Phil also had a great sense of humour that he injected into his shows. I believe he was the only man who took the super sonic Concorde from the UK to the US to perform at the Live Aid charity concert in both cities on the same day. He started in the theatre as a kid as the Artful Dodger in the play "Oliver".
"He ain't the biggest voice" has to be a joke 😂 his voice is one of the most recognizable voices in the history of music tied with only a few exceptions such as Bruce Springsteen or Cyndi Lauper for example...@@woswasdenni1914
There are only 3 people to ever sell 100million records as part of a group and 100million more as a solo artist. Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson and the great, great, GREAT Phil Collins!
Understatement. Phil Collins is one of three artists that has sold 100 million albums both in a group (Genesis) and as a solo artist. The other two are Paul McCartney (The Beatles) and Michael Jackson (The Jackson 5/Jacksons)
You use the right choice of words one of. There have been many great drummers throughout the 20th century. The problem is a lot of young people in today's generation do not acknowledge that do not do what's necessary to find out who they are. 🤔
Pil Collins is an icon. He was 53 at this concert. He wrote this song about his divorce. Singing and playing drums is very difficult and he does it with ease. Love your reaction! ♥
My dear the why this song is so dramatic, so loved by the audience AND so iconic is because it was the first top 40 song used in either a tv show or movie. It was featured in the pilot episode of the 80s tv show Miami vice.
I've seen Phil Collins many times in concert, both as lead singer of Genesis and on his solo tours. He's one of my heroes, as I am also a drummer. I grew up listening to Genesis (and Rush) and being blown away by his playing but then also by his incredible song writing and vocals! He's the total package. Yes, please do some live Genesis to see him in action! Genesis was a great Progressive Rock band, first recording in the late 1960s but it took them some years to get famous. By the 1980's they were one of the biggest bands on the planet! You should see some of their show from 1986, at Wembley Stadium! Incredible!
I've talked with a few drummers who said the drum cadence used in this song is extremely difficult to play.. I wouldn't know cause I can barely play the radio!
Something most people don’t know.. first of all phill isn’t singing “hold on” it’s “oh Lord”. Second is the song was written after catching his wife cheating on him. The “I’ve been waiting on this all my life” is about wanting to be married and starting a family. It’s why he left Genesis, spent 4 years with his mom and dad, then coming out with this song. Sad
You have it all wrong, he has been married twice, the second time was with the children’s nanny, he had the affair and the song has nothing to do with any of his marriages, you need to watch him in interviews, he is from the uk as am I, yes he was with a band called genesis and a few of them are doing the music with him, his son now plays drums Phil cannot play the drums any more sadly due to nerve pain from repetitive injuries due to drumming all his life, he has to sit on a stool now, he also did a bit of acting i the film the great train robbery, listen to his album no jacket required it’s amazing , hope this info is helpful he was one of the best musicians to come out of uk xxx
@@audreyharalambos2592Y sorry but you are the one who has it wrong or maybe you just got a bit mixed up …… phil wrote this when going through first divorce from Andrea Bertorelli ..Phill has been married 3 times ….divorced Andrea 1980… song released 1981 he married his 2nd wife Jill Travelman in 1984..divorced 1996 … then married for a 3rd time 1999, divorced 2006 … he has said in an interview.l, that I watched many many years ago …I was going through a divorce ..not sure what it all meant but it was all the hurt frustration and anger I was feeling …..also when he sang it on Top of the Pops on the BBC back in 1981 he brought in a tin of paint and set it down in full view of the camera … we were all well aware of what it meant…apart from that everything else you said is correct… the movie he stared in is called Buster !!!! He also when he was a child played The Artfull Dodger in the musical Oliver, in the West End
@@audreyharalambos2592 sorry but you have this wrong … it was indeed written about his first divorce from Andrea …. Maybe you have just got it a bit mixed up as phil and his 3 ex wives never had a nanny maybe read his autobiography when he states quite clearly that In the Air Tonight was a message to Andrea …
An absolute icon and this right here explains the magic of PHIL COLLINS! The best live performance ever! And btw this song is about his divorce back in the 80’s.
Hi Ola, Phil began as the drummer for the band Genesis, then became the lead singer after Peter Gabriel left the band. His solo career was so good. Due to health issues, his career is now limited.
The song is originally from 1981, from the very start of his solo career. He really had a ton of hit songs in the 80's. The lyrics were inspired by his first wife divorcing him.
From Wiki. Collins said of the song's lyrics: "I wrote the lyrics spontaneously. I'm not quite sure what the song is about, but there's a lot of anger, a lot of despair and a lot of frustration."[
From Wiki... "Collins's discography includes eight studio albums that have sold 33.5 million certified units in the US and an estimated 150 million records sold worldwide, making him one of the world's best-selling artists.[10] He is one of only three recording artists, along with Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson, who have sold over 100 million records both as solo artists and separately as principal members of a band.[11][12] He has won eight Grammy Awards, six Brit Awards (winning Best British Male Artist three times), two Golden Globe Awards, one Academy Award, and a Disney Legend Award.[13] He was awarded six Ivor Novello Awards from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, including the International Achievement Award. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1999, and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis in 2010. He has also been recognised by music publications with induction into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2012, and the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame in 2013."
SInging while playing drums requires real talent, as singing requires proper breath control, so playing the drums while you sing is extremely difficult. Now, if you want to listen to more of Phil Collins... there is a TON of truly fantastic music both from his solo career and from his time with Genesis
Phil Collins ( great drummer) had great music in the 80’s but IMO he was way over played and I think a lot of people got sick of hearing his music for a time, unfortunately.
My niece said she had just discovered this really cool song played by Lilly Collin’s father. My sister and I thought Phil might be happy to know his daughter is getting him some extra exposure.
Phil still is my biggest drumming influence. 🙂 Next to Genesis and his solo career, he was a session musician and record producer for a wide range of artists, such as Robert Plant, Philip Bailey, Frida (from ABBA), Eric Clapton, Tina Turner, Chaka Khan, Tears For Fears, Howard Jones, Adam Ant, John Martyn, Gary Brooker, Paul McCartney and many more. 🙂
@@aleclewis9123 fantastic band!,, so much talent in there……man, they were tight! I love the video of the medley at…Glastonbury I think it was….1990? Not sure of the year.
@@w.geoffreyspaulding6588 it was Knebworth. They never played the Glastonbury festival. Yes, it was 1990 for The Silver Clef Award Winners Concert in support of the Nordoff Robbins charity.
Hi Olavity. Yes he's the drummer and lead singer of the band Genesis he took over from Peter Gabriel the song or music was from one of the Hangover movies I think the second one with Mike Tyson in it ,he was in a film called 'Buster' the great train robbery he has a lot of hits on his own .❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤💋💋💋💋💋💋💋😘😘😘😘😘😘
Definitely check out some of his stuff with Genesis: "Turn It On Again" or "Mama." From his work during the Peter Gabriel era of Genesis, try "Firth of Fifth" or "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight"!
what alot of people dont remember, live aid, because queen stole the show, but ohil collins, played this song in wembley england, and because it was a 16 hour world wide show, after he performed at wembley, phil, jumped on a plane, flying against the time zones and played the same song in philly america on the same day, same live aid concert
Great job with your reaction and thoughts on the live performance of In Air Tonight from Phil Collins . You might remember the song from the TV Miami Vice . That you might have seen on repeats . she looks a bit young to remember the original show from the late 80's .
So glad you liked it. This is the best rendition of the song I have seen. I had the pleasure of attending an outdoor concert in Dallas which starred Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler and of course Phil Collins!! That is an incredible trio!! Phil performed this very song. Later, Clapton walked up to the mic and broke into Layla and in that instant a bolt of lightning came down and branched out under the clouds!! He kept right on playing and then the rain came. We all stood with out lighters burning, with our arms stretched out above us.!! The rain stopped shortly after he finished the song!! To say that it was a spiritual event... well, it was. As we say in Texas; y'all be safe. Everyone!
Hi 👋☺️ iss Ola !!! Phil Has Many Great Hits Here Are 2 more for You to check.out As always the like button ✅ has been Illuminated 😁👍👍😎🇺🇲🌎 1) Against All Odds 2) I Can't Dance 🩰
Phil is one of the three artists ever to sell 100 million records, both with a band and solo. His band was Genesis. The other two are Michael Jackson, who was in the Jackson 5. And, of course, Paul McCartney who sold 100 million solo and tons more with the Beatles.
You,my dear, look exactly like my very first girlfriend and true Love!! Great Reaction as Always....Hello from New Hampshire U.S.A Beautiful Young Lady ❤
I remember phil starring in a late 80s maybe early 90s movie called Buster where he played a common criminal who planned one last big score to retire on , a modern day train robbery . It was actually a good movie and he was a good actor
the best performance of the career of Phil Collins was when he sings and play piano at the live aid 1985 'against all odds' very more emotionnal than that song ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7A8NgPVizP4.html ....trust me ...nothing better of him...
This song was actually written by him either during or right after his first divorce... He said the words came out so fast and easily that he didn't even have time to write them down correctly, just scribbled them down on something... I belieeeeve it was to the dude who slept with his then-wife... But, yeah, check out "Ssssusdio" by Phil Collins, and "Easy Lover" that he did with Philip Bailey of "Earth, Wind, and Fire"... He also did an episode on "Miami Vice" back in the day where his song, "Take Me Home," was also a featured track... He did all this amazing music AFTER his singing and drumming days with the band, "Genasis"... Yeah, definitely check him out, dude... OH, AND I WAS REMINDED, PLEASE, check out his song, "I Don't Care Anymore," ANOTHER GREAT drum section... Yeah. He's a baaaad monkeyfarma!!! lol 🤘🏾🤙🏾✌🏾
Congratulations, you just discovered one of the GOATs. But this is only the tip of the iceberg. Phil has a lot more to offer, both solo and as drummer and frontman of the best band ever: Genesis. There’s a lot more for you to discover now.
Please check out more Phil Collins and his band Genesis. This is a cool performance. However the studio version doesn't have all the added electronic sound effects. I'm not a fan of cheesy vocal effects. His voice doesn't need it.
one of only three people to sell 100 m records as a solo and band artist (paul mccartney and michael jackson) was originally drummer for genesis...the verse with 'i saw what you did' is an indictment on his cheating ex wife can feel his bitterness in this performance still all the years later...was in an episode of Miami Vice tv show in the 80s
This is a true Legend at work. Is it just me or does anyone else get a massive chill as soon as he starts playing the drums? Outstanding!!!! Phil Collins is a world class drummer who can also really sing! This is an outstanding performance. I can listen to this all day.
It's understandable I'll give you a short synopsis about Phil Collins he started he started with the band Genesis in the 1970s he went solo in the 80 he created his own band he got musicians from all over the world to perform with him this version of the song is his best. Oh yeah I forgot to tell you he plays the piano too. Yes he is a actor well he was his health is failing him he performed this in early he performed this in the early 2000s.
It's funny, at first it's like "when is it gonna start?", and then at the end it's like "wait, what, it's already over?" Thise backjing vocals are created with a vocoder, a keyboard instrument with a vocal microphone, that let's the vocal shape the sound of the synth. And yeah, Daft Punk are avid users of the vocoder. It came to prominence in the 70s but has enjoyed many revivals since, first with this 1980 monster hit, and later with Daft Punk and many others.
Yeah, Phil Collins had huge success as a solo artist while still a member of Genesis. I mean this was a singer who himself pulled in huge crowds, mostly female, back in the 80s. The ironic thing is he never intended to ever be any kind of singing star. He was happy with just being a band's drummer/backup vocalist. It's just that when the original lead singer of Genesis Peter Gabriel (another artist you need to deep dive) left, the band truly tried auditioning vocalists to replace him. But no one was ever good enough. To prepare for the audition, Phil was the band member who taught the vocalists the audition songs; so when hearing all this, the rest of Genesis decided they could just make Phil the lead vocalist and have him pull co-drumming duty with a touring drummer during live shows.
Boston : Foreplay/ Longtime you will love it . I'm new here 69 years old I love your reactions to the old stuff I grew up on . I'll send you more you should listin to from Tree Dog Night , Chicago, Ten Years After, The Eagles and many more
He was the drummer for GENESIS, until Peter Gabriel left to start a solo career. That's when Phil stepped up and became the lead vocalist for the group.
Collins was in the band Genesis. This is from his debut solo album "Face Value" released on February 13, 1981. In 1979, Collins began to write songs during a break in activity from Genesis. This song was used in a superb way in the series pilot for the 80s show "Miami Vice," which was a great show about Miami undercover cops trying to deal with the Florida drug trade, where so much money is involved that the criminals can easily make a million dollar bribe to get what they want. Thanks for letting me know about this channel over on your movie channel.
Nice reaction video 👍 Phil Collins is known worldwide as one of the best drummers ever, and of course an excellent songwriter and singer. He’s won several Grammys…Golden Globes & Brit Awards… plus other awards too! I’ve been a fan of his for years, as well as the band “Genesis” I wasn’t at this particular concert (Paris), but I did see him at Manchester and Glasgow during the same tour. The drums that he used actually came up through the floor just before he got to them (you can just about see them moving upwards in the video) I’m not sure which venue it was, but during one concert of the tour, the drums failed to rise up. Phil jumped down into the hole and hit the drums as normal! What a performer!
Phil started in the band Genesis as the drummer, with Peter Gabriel as lead singer. When Peter left the band, Phil took over as lead singer. He started his solo career in the 80s but still performed with the band. Check out other songs like Against All Odds, Another Day In Paradise and Easy Lover, then check out him in Genesis with songs like Mama and Land Of Confusion. He also starred in the lead role in the 1988 film Buster, about the 1963 Great Train Robbery in London, UK.
Phil was in Genesis as their drummer throughout 1971-96. In 1976 he also became the singer, succeeding Peter Gabriel, bringing in Chester Thompson on drums for live tours. The band had regular short hiatuses where the individual members recorded solo projects. First Steve Hackett, then all three remaing members with Mike and the Mechanics, Tony Banks/Bankstatement and Phil Collins respectively. Phil released his first in 1981 after his divorce. After leaving the band he joined for the single Carpet Crawlers 1999 with Peter Gabriel. Also on the tours Turn it on again in 2007 and finally The last domino tour in 2022.
In 1985 he played this song at the Live Aid Concert in London, Wembley Stadium. Later, at the same day, he performed "Against All Odds" in Philadelphia. As a worldwide part of this unforgetable concert.
I got to see Phil Collins once. I was in the nose bleeds at a Robert Plant show "Principle of Moments" tour and had no idea Phil was even playing drums until the end of the night when Sir Robert introduced his phenomenal band and Phil just waved to the crowd and left after one more song. Total professional.
Seems men feel this significantly more than women...like couple Superbowls back NFL did whole segment on how most lockerrooms have this playing before every game, DMX used for a track.... just hits men different I think...
One of the biggest songs of the late 80s and 90s. It's a hate song but the biggest slow dance song at the same time. People had this breakup song played at their wedding 🤣😳Go figure
Phil has been married 3 times all ending in divorce .. Andrea Bertorelli in 1975 -1980 Jill Travelmam 1984-1996 and Orianne Cevey 1999-2006 .. he wrote this going though a messy divorce from Andrea …he said in an interview I’m not sure what the song means ..BUT it was all the pain, hurt, frustration and anger I was feeling …. Another song about that divorce is I Don’t Care Anymore !!!! He has an autobiography out called .. Not Dead yet !!! Chapter 9 talks about the divorce and how it wrenched out In the air tonight and how it was a message to Andrea, he explains it in detail while the line In the air tonight means he’s getting on with his life or trying to …..Andrea was not at all happy that he wrote these songs …
If you wanna see another great live performance (and another catchy song too) check out his performance of Home By The Sea on Wembley arena in july of 1987 by Genesis (The name i was band he was in before going solo!)...
I also recommend (no reaction required) this song from "The Live And Loose In Paris" concert this live versus and the Paris.. The version you just reacted to and the Paris version are my two best favorites. Haunting & Hurtful song "In The Air Tonight" is born out of Phil Collins divorce. His other song to come because of his divorce"I Don't Care Anymore" That he hardly did in concert because it was to emotional. But thank God "In The Air Tonight" made it to every song list on all live concert dates.
You Noted the Long Bearded Bass Player , Leyland Skylr , whose resume as a studio musician is stunning . Take some time & check him & his youtube channel for yourself . He has countless stories of all the amazing musicians he's played with , Like Phil Collins , whom he toured with on a few occasions "back in the day" . Leyland is still an in high demand L.A. based studio musician .
Hi Olavity, this song is worth keeping in your back pocket for if you suffer with breaking up from someone. This song is good for facing your partner's lover. For facing your partner, I recommend you listen to "Phil Collins - I dont care any more" here's hoping you never need to listen to them in anger.
